Classics Without All the Class discussion

The interactions between Long John Silver and all the other characters is interesting. Like so many contemporary stories, Silver is a complex man, not purely evil with some subtle elements of "good" that are in his best interest of course. I loved his manner and all along tried to guess his motive at any particular moment. When Jim first meets him, you would think he would be nothing short of a mentor but then that would make for a pretty dull pirate story.

(view spoiler)[ Having Jim fall asleep in the apple barrel and overhear the pirates' plot is a great literary device because up until this moment Long John Silver has been successful in duping everyone except Captain Smollett. This speaks to Silver's intelligence and his leadership among his men. It took a true leader to keep the pirates from mutinying prematurely. Unfortunately, Silver used his talents for personal gain and evil. (hide spoiler)]
