Shannon (planetshannon) | 28 comments Wow, where to begin! So many new perspectives, locations, everything!

The prologue felt really long and I am not sure what we were getting beyond guy doesn't think he'll end up a maester so steals something from the temple. Felt like a magical something? I almost always forget what they tell us in the prologue later. They do speak of Old Town which is where Sam is heading too, so maybe something will connect there.

I actually really enjoyed seeing some perspectives from new locations, even if the perspective we were seeing them from wasn't the nicest person in the world. I felt this way for both The Prophet (in the Iron Isle) and The Captain of the Guards (in Dorne).

But first... the Dorne women are awesome! Nice to have some really amazing, capable and confident women. I hope we see more from Obara, Tyere and Nymera (odd to us that name as it's so close to Arya's wolf). Hopefully Areo's plan to lock them up totally fails!

How do people feel about the Iron Isle folk? It's such an harsh location and tension ridden people, but there is something so compelling about them. And The Prophet dude really believes in their sea god. I wonder if their sea re-birth thing considered magical. Or early knowledge of CPR and luck.

I was a little disappointed with both the Cersei and the Brienne chapters, they both were rather down on themselves (Cersei more in the dream she had than how she was in person). I was so looking forward to seeing them there perspectives and we a lot of down-talk. Hopefully that turns around. It's also pretty sad that Cersei truly believes that Tyrion killed Joffery. And interesting that she wants Ser Kevan to be The Hand because he's obedient. Will be interesting to see more from both of them.

Overall, I am enjoying this book the most so far! I think it's getting to see so many women characters. All of the chapters so far have been quite long, but I think that's to get us situated back in the world.

I'm hoping to read a chapter a day and stay really consistent. Do you guys plan out your reading like that? Or dive in and focus on only one book?

Looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts!

So it's been a while since I read 'A Storm of Swords' (2015) so it took me a bit to get into the whole story again.

I agree the Brienne chapter was a little underwhelming, but hopefully they will improve over the course of the book.

Is anyone listening to the audio? I really don't like the narrator. He has some awful voices for the characters - especially Sam. He makes him sounds so stupid (I know he's not the strongest of characters, but I've always liked Sam since I tend to root for underdog characters), and also - when did Jon become so full of himself that he can't talk normally to his so called friends.... Anyway - I'm looking forward to see what will happen.

Shannon (planetshannon) | 28 comments It does take a while to get back into it, even from just coming from the last book!

Sorry to hear that the audiobook narration isn't great, especially for Sam! He is such a great character. Jon felt very different in this book so far, I know that he is in a position of power, but he seems like the last person to change because of it. I hope that isn't how he is throughout the book.

So glad to have you reading with us, Anita! Yay!!

Yes - I did remember that, and I also remember he went through some rough things by the end of the last book, but it just seemed so out of character for him, especially when Sam (accidentally) called him Jon and he got really angry for not calling him his proper title.

I've been listening to the audiobooks on audible. The characters all kind of sound the same to me.

This started a bit slow for me. I was a bit confused through the prologue and The Prophet and The Captain of the Guard chapters. I wasn't sure why I needed all of that information? I'm hoping it will be more clear the more I get into the book.
