Each member must finish a saga, trilogy (three books). You don't have to read MORE than three books, but it has to be three books from a series that includes MORE than three books. We DON'T have to read the same series. WE can earn an additional 50 points to our team total, if every member completes this obstacle.

I hope we are participate in this obstacles....extra 50 points.

I want to listen to a series on audio. Any ideas?

Amber | 93 comments Hi,

I would like to introduce myself. I live in Texas. I am an educational administrator. I’m teaching myself Spanish. I love to read and listen to books on audio. I’m not a fantasy or sci-fi fan. This is my first winter games. I’m so excited for the games and to meet new people.

message 22: by Sam (last edited Nov 14, 2018 12:59PM) (new)

Sam (aramsamsam) Hi everyone!
I'm Sam, I live in Germany but have Spanish ancestry (so ¡hola! Amber). Online marketeer at day and cinema aficionada at night, I recently overcame a huge reading slump. Back to normal just in time for my third Winter Games :)
I enjoy most genres, especially SciFi. Not so much a romance or crime reader though.
I'm always trying to reduce the tbr and catch up on some fantasy books I never came around to read when I was a fantasy-no-scifi reader.

message 23: by John (new)

John | 76 comments Hi team! I am John and I live in So California.

Thank you Amber for being our Captain and leader! You rock.

My bio says all audio books all the time haha. I read with my ears. I will listen to anything and try to diversify. But I have found that I really like some good fiction stories. This is my first Winter Games :)

Lois Lane | 14 comments Hi! I'm Lois, and I live in West Virginia. I'm a semi-retired college prof.

When it comes to reading, I gravitate more toward nonfiction than fiction. In terms of fiction, I read mostly science fiction/fantasy, YA, and the occasional mystery. You can probably guess from my username that I'm a comics collector and media fangirl.

This is my first Winter Games, and I'm looking forward to getting started.

Sara | 13 comments Hi! My name is Sara, I'm from Arizona and I work in data entry.

My favorite genre is horror, but I'll read anything that sounds weird.

This is also my first winter games.

Amber | 93 comments Yaaay! Everyone is beginning to save their spots and introduce themselves. I hope everyone has had a chance to review the rules and obstacles.

Please post book ideas for the game obstacles, especially the team obstacles.

The other teams are beginning to post ideas. We can use their ideas too.

We have 4 days until the start of the games.

Awesome! :)

message 27: by Sam (last edited Nov 14, 2018 12:53PM) (new)

Sam (aramsamsam) Let's share our obstacle plans! Here is what I had in mind (if anyone wants to join me, I'm always up for a bddy read!):

Seriously, series?
1: First in a series: Luck in the Shadows (first in Nightrunner series)
2: Read a whole series (+50 for group): Valdemar, Last Herald-Mage trilogy by Mercedes Lackey

Genre Based
1: A book from a genre you do not normally read from: Rejected Princesses (Non-Fiction for young readers)
2: Read a Self-Help, or Personal Growth book: The Power of Vulnerability
3: Read a comic book or graphic novel: Shinya Shokudo 2

C&B Related
1: Book title starts with a letter in COFFEE AND BOOKS: Flowers for Algernon
2: Team read from the BOTM archive (2017 and before): Wicked

And then there is of course the cooperative category Buddy System.

1: Read a book recommended by another person participating in the games!
So how do we go about this? It might be a good idea to start with a couple of recommendations each. Last year my group ended up recommending books all through our thread but it is also nice to have some titles to start with.
For horror I can recommend The Shining. I have read it a second time this year and think it is close to being perfect.
For non-fiction I recommend Eating Animals. It's thoroughly researched and takes no sides.
For fantasy my favourite has to be Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, but for a shorter read I recommend The Wee Free Men.

2: Team Read!
Any ideas for this one? We seem to have a wide variety of reading tastes in the group so it might proof difficult to find something we all want to (re-)read.

Also: We have to pick a fun group name!

message 28: by Amber (new)

Amber | 93 comments Cool Sam! I love your ideas. I recently heard about the Power of Vulnerability. I am very interesting in reading it and Eating Animals.

Do you recommend reading Shinya Shokudo 2 before 1?

I have some new ideas for our group name.
TBR & DNF Book Club
The Book Warriors
The Bookworms
All Booked
A Novel Idea
Divine Nine
Overbooked
Raging Readers
Bookaholics

What do you guys think?

These are some awesome suggestions. Sam, since you have participated in the Winter Games before, do you have any tips or ideas that the team needs to be aware of?

Lastly, do you think it would be too confusing if I copy/paste your ideas to the original obstacle threads above to keep it ALL together or should we keep the ideas separate? How was it done last year?

We are looking forward to hearing ideas/recommendations from everyone.

I really like the team name Overbooked!

I am open to read or reread anything for the team reads. I read a little bit of everything.
For the BOTM archived read, I will second:
The Husband's Secret
Gone Girl
The Light Between Oceans
Fahrenheit 451 (reread)

Or The Golem and the Jinni or A Man Called Ove.

I love "Overbooked" as a name :)

I have read Shinya Shokudo 1 a couple of months ago, but I have a serious series problem. Even when I'm really into a book it can take me ages to get to the next installment (usually it takes so long that I don't remember the story enough to enjoy book 2 lol - it's crazy).

On to my Winter Games veteran wisdom :) (I had forgotten I was around when the first Games happened!)
For any strategic readers n the group: Short books are in the end more rewarding. For 3 books with 100 pages each you get 3 points, for one book with 300 pages you only get 1 point. Big books are however perfect as obstacles because then your points get tripled.
BUT the points are just one part of the Games; I'm here first and foremost to enjoy myself and get some (tbr) reading done :) Also we get points for all sorts of things. The last Winter Games were most fun when the group members had gotten to know each other and we were just bantering!

Amber, your idea to collect all recommendations sounds really helpful! Now I'm not sure, but maybe we need to keep track of the message in which the original recommendation can be found. That way when we use one of our group mates' rec for the obstacle, it will be easier to assign the correct origin.

message 31: by Lois (new)

Lois Lane | 14 comments For the team read, I'd like to second The Princess Bride. Funnier than the movie (which I love) and last time I checked, it was free for those of us with Kindle Unlimited.

Here's what I'm thinking of doing for the obstacles (subject to change based on what I'm in the mood for):

Seriously, series:
1. First in a series: Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor
2. Read a whole series: Feed (and the rest of the Newsflesh series--zombies, reporters, politics--three of my favorite things in one series!)

Genre Based:
1. A book from a genre you don't normally read from: The Princess Diarist. This has been sitting on my shelf for too long. I bought it the month before Carrie died, and I haven't had the heart to pick it up.
2. Read a self-help or personal growth book: Quiet Influence: The Introvert's Guide to Making a Difference. Literally the only book in my Kindle that fits the category. I hate self-help books!
3. Read a comic book or graphic novel: Now we're talking! Superman Archives, Vol. 7. (Featuring the Lois Lane, Girl Reporter series, which I need to reread for research purposes anyway.)

C&B Related:
1. Book title starts with a letter in Coffee and Books: Beatles '66: The Revolutionary Year
2. Team read:

I love the name Overbooked!

I'm not so fond of self-help books per se either, but your choice sounds like it might actually be useful. Reading Quiet helped me to learn so much about myself. Introversion is still almost a taboo subject. I hope you'll get something out of your book too, Lois!

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking is one of my favorite books! I teach Public Speaking and often recommend it to students with severe speech anxiety. The fear of public speaking is often (though not always) linked to introversion, so there's a lot of material in Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking that relates to anxiety about giving a speech.

Amber | 93 comments Hi guys!

I am so excited to begin. We have one more day (un mas dia) before the games begin.

It looks like everyone who has recently posted likes the name Overbooked as a team name. If no other teammate objects, then let's go with Overbooked.

Team Reading Obstacles -

There are TWO team reading obstacles that we need to complete (we don't have to read them at the same time)

1. Each member must read the SAME book from archived BOTM 2017 & older - This is just an idea to make it easier, can we read The Princess Bride (posted by me and seconded by our teammate, Lois Lane)?

2. Read the another (SAME) book as a team - This is just an idea to make it easier, Michelle & Sam, can you guys choose a book for the team to read?

Please let me know if anyone has another idea....

Sam, I really appreciate you sharing your winter game veteran wisdom. :)
I plan to be a strategic reader. I plan to focus on shorter books that are at least 100 pages. I will be referring back to your wisdom post throughout the games.

Buddy System Obstacle - we ALL have to read a book recommended by another person (from any team) participating in the game.

Please post book recommendations for the buddy system obstacle.

Sam & I have both posted some recommendations.

Countdown guys.....:) so excited :)

Michelle (gizzyistheshizzy) | 30 comments I’m going to list a lot of random book recommendations since I can’t sleep and I have to be at work in 3 hours:

Nonfiction
Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI
The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon
Night
The Glass Castle
The Princess Diarist or anything by Carrie Fisher

Everything else
Howl's Moving Castle
The Graveyard Book
Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal
Storm Front (series)
The Cuckoo's Calling (series)
Ready Player One
The Giver (series)
The Female of the Species
11/22/63
Dreamland Burning
All the Light We Cannot See
Oryx and Crake (series)

Graphic novels
Saga, Vol. 1
Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened

I also have to recommend, even though most people have read, the Harry Potter series and anything by Jane Austen.
I’ve also enjoyed Michael Connelly’s Bosch series and the Lincoln Lawyer series.
Also Rick Riordan’s books on mythology.

I think I might reread the Harry Potter or the Percy Jackson series for the series challenge.

message 40: by Lois (last edited Nov 18, 2018 03:32PM) (new)

Lois Lane | 14 comments Here are some recommendations:
Nonfiction:
Affairs of Honor: National Politics in the New Republic.--especially great if you're a Hamilton fan
Blood & Ivy: The 1849 Murder That Scandalized Harvard
I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer
The Lynching: The Epic Courtroom Battle That Brought Down the Klan
Never Caught: The Washingtons' Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge
The Race Beat: The Press, the Civil Rights Struggle, and the Awakening of a Nation

And because I have a Tudor obsession:
The Creation of Anne Boleyn: A New Look at England's Most Notorious Queen
I The Six Wives of Henry VIII
The Temptation of Elizabeth Tudor: Elizabeth I, Thomas Seymour, and the Making of a Virgin Queen
The Perfect Prince: The Mystery of Perkin Warbeck and His Quest for the Throne of England

Fiction:
For mystery, anything by Joan Hess (especially the Maggody series), Sharyn McCrumb, or Elizabeth Peters. For YA, I can't rave enough about Sadie and Summers' zombie novel This is Not a Test. Michelle mentioned Jane Austen, so I'll ad that Stephanie Barron's Jane Austen mysteries can't be beat and, I think, really capture Austen's tone. For horror, my top pick would have to be Mira Grant.

Amber | 93 comments We are counting down to the start of the 2018-2019 Winter Games.....woohoo...it officially starts at midnight your time!!

If you are currently reading a book with 100+pages left, then it can COUNT towards a book read for the games (reading challenge).

I found a quote that I wanted to share as we count down to the start of the fun-filled, reading challenge.

“Winning is something, but participation is everything.” Debasish Mridha

Let's go Team Two! :)

Sam (aramsamsam) Nice quote Amber, this really captures how I feel about competition in general :)

Happy reading everyone!

message 43: by Sam (new)

Sam (aramsamsam) I finished my first book! I had already started Flowers for Algernon and waited till today to read the last 100 pages. My heart is broken, but I earned us 3 points (C&B Related 1 obstacle).

Lois Lane | 14 comments Don't know if everyone else knows this, but William Goldman, author of The Princess Bride, died this weekend. If you don't know any of his work, besides TPB, I'd highly recommend the screenplay forButch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid: Screenplay. Even if you've never seen the film (which I have an insane, passionate love for), the screenplay stands on its own as a great piece of writing. If you have seen the film, there are some extra scenes (more Etta!) that add so much to your understanding of the characters.

John just finished a book too. This is a great start.

Thanks for logging in your books. I have extra time this week to log in books daily, but normally I will log in every couple days or weekly.

Amber | 93 comments Hi guys,

I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend.

I have added a link to my first post that includes our team totals on a Google spreadsheet. Please click the link for more details.

Sheena, leader of Team Four shared this awesome way to keep of with our totals throughout the games.

Everyone who has provided input indicated that they like the team name, Overbooked.

In addition, we have TWO team obstacle reads.

1. Book we choose to read as a team - A Man Called Ove has been proposed.
2. Book from the C&B archives bookshelf (2018 does not count) - A Princess Bride has been proposed

If you have any new ideas for a team read, please post them so we can vote as a TEAM.

I love quotes, I couldn't resist sharing the one below.

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”
