What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Okay... I read this book a while ago when I was browsing Amazon books, about four or five years ago. It was about a girl who wandered through the wastes of the Winter and finds a magical sword that brands her. She then travels to a village where she meets a fox and he helps her. She then goes to learn magic and meets a dragon. They become friends, and she meets back up with the fox, though she never quite finished her magic training. Then she escapes from this general woman with a dragon helmet and chases them to this cave. The Imperial army doesn't want to enter the cave, but they don't know there is a hidden village on the other side of the cave.

Volume 1 ends when the fox leaves her in the village. While the girl finishes most of her magic training in the hidden village, she hasn't learned enough for actual combat, but she goes anyways and is almost killed, but the fox saves her and they escape the cave together. Outside, they meet a few guards, but easily dealt with, since they are just grunts. They raid an Imperial Magic Lab and save another fox, this one female, and hide out while the lab burns. They find shelter in the forest and find a friend who helps them. Time passes and the group decides to buy a mine, I believe? They take resources away from the main capital. Once the capital is weakened, they decide to find the other members of their group of Heroes (signified by their brands) and find one is an elemental.

Next volume, the world goes to shit, and the heroes work to kill the evil demons. Seriously, that's about all I remember.

Parts of this match up with one or more of The Obsidian series/trilogy The first book is The Outstretched Shadow.
