Sara Debut novels can be breathtakingly fresh or tragically inept. With so many new authors entering the book scene you'll have your pick of lots of new authors. Or you could dig into the back list of your favorite authors and try their first novels!

Legacy
A Place for Us
The Woman in the Window
The Kiss Quotient

Here's a good list of debuts from 2018:

Brittany Morrison | 145 comments I'm planning on reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone as I am planning on rereading the series next year.

The Chapter Conundrum (Stacey) | 404 comments I immediately thought of a couple that weren't listed in that article ^:
*edit: (I just realized that article is only 2018 lol)

Rainbirds by Clarissa Goenawan
The 100 by Kass Morgan

message 4: by Anabell (new)

Anabell | 355 comments Caraval but read it this year so not sure what to read. I liked the book and will be reading the next one.

I might do as Brittany and read Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

message 5: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 2529 comments Dark Rooms (author is a client of mine!) - set in a school too.
Blackfish City - I read for cyberpunk in 2018. Much to enjoy even if flawed.
Such a Long Journey - just read this - set in Bombay, India at the start of the war with Pakistan/Bangladesh.
The Mysterious Affair at Styles - Poirot is introduced
The Black Moth - birth of the regency romance, coincidentally
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius - made quite a splash when published...a tad controversial.

message 6: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 38 comments I never finished it so I'm reading Interview with the Vampire

It was her debut after her daughter died.

message 7: by Stina (new)

Stina (stinalyn) | 482 comments I really liked Bird Box. And I thought The Lies of Locke Lamora was amazing.

I am not sure what I'll read for this prompt. Probably Perfectly Undone: A Novel, since it seems to keep getting bumped from my reading lists.

Raquel (Silver Valkyrie Reads) | 896 comments I have Looking for Alaska on my shelf, so I'll probably use that one.

There are so many books on that list I want to read! The Immortalists stuck out at me, that one looks so good!

I really enjoyed this one. Almost as much as The Fault in Our Stars.

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 190 comments Some debuts I've read that surprised me in how great they were written:

The Edge of Everything
The Beauty That Remains
Your One & Only
Girl Made of Stars
The Bird and the Blade

message 12: by Rachelnyc (new)

Rachelnyc | 186 comments This is going to be difficult to narrow down since I have quite a few on my list that fit.

For anyone who hasn't read it yet, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is a debut novel and is one of my favorites of the year so far. I am reading Everything Here Is Beautiful now and it is wonderful as well.

Darlene Gartside (dayslostinreading) | 4 comments Sara wrote: "Debut novels can be breathtakingly fresh or tragically inept. With so many new authors entering the book scene you'll have your pick of lots of new authors. Or you could dig into the back list of y..."

Going by that list, I may add Children of Blood and Bone to my list. Have it on my shelf but didn't get a chance to read it this year. :)

message 14: by Lucas (last edited Nov 11, 2018 08:41PM) (new)

Lucas (scarwiz) | 5 comments I'll either go with The Gray House or An Absolutely Remarkable Thing on this one
I can also wholeheartedly recommend Ghostwritten, I still think it's David Mitchell's best book (though I haven't Read The Thousand Autumns of Jacod de Zoet yet)

message 15: by Serendipity (new)

Serendipity | 146 comments I'll be reading Clair Adam's Golden Child. It's being published by Hogarth under the SJP Imprint. One of my favorite reads this year was A Place for Us. It's also a debut novel and was the first release for the DIP imprint. Since I loved it I have high hopes for Golden Child.

message 17: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 1823 comments I'll probably pick a 2019 debut for this. Maybe The Paper & Hearts Society: Book 1.

Kenya Starflight | 1059 comments Going for Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore, which I know a lot of people read this year for the "book set in a bookstore" prompt but I missed...

message 29: by Anne (new)

Anne (annefullercoxnet) | 204 comments Moon Over Manifest is a great children's debut.

message 30: by Lindi (new)

Lindi (lindimarie) Going to go with Sense and Sensibility for this prompt, in an effort to get more classics off my shelf.

Two debut novels I've read recently that come to mind, The Kiss Quotient and The Hating Game. Both fun, adult romances. I loved them both and would highly recommend if you're in the mood for something lighter.

message 32: by Ian (new)

Ian (iansreads) Someone mentioned An Absolutely Remarkable Thing here, and I may steal that idea because I meant to read it for the Barnes and Noble book club this year and did not have the time.

SadieReadsAgain (sadiestartsagain) | 767 comments That's a great list - 100 Must Read Debut Novels

Turns out I already have a few debuts slotted for other prompts, so I'm going with Ghostwritten: A Novel in Nine Parts. I read Black Swan Green this year and it was amazing, so I'm excited to read more of his stuff.

message 37: by KateNZ (new)

KateNZ Some great ideas here.

I recommend Everything Under - shortlisted for the Booker this year, and quite remarkable

message 38: by Ruby (new)

Ruby (red-ruby) | 42 comments I'm thinking about reading Again, but Better or An Absolutely Remarkable Thing. I'm leaning more towards Green's book since it's out already. Riccio's book won't be out until late May but who knows 🤷.
