So...several of the books on this list don't actually seem to BE non-fiction. Can I still read one of those? If not, can anyone suggest a book from this list where the animal doesn't die/is not horribly abused?
Jessica, I listened to Scent of the Missing: Love and Partnership with a Search-and-Rescue Dog. It is about the raising and training of a rescue dog.Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World and Marley and Me: Life and Love With the World's Worst Dog were two other books I enjoyed.

Glad you liked it, Jessica.
To second Jessica's question - Can I read a fiction book on this list, or does it need to be a non-fiction book?
