Oh, I’m in Europe, so followed my hours:-( Sorry. Will I delete my post?

message 3: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19785 comments Sure. We all start the same time for topplers, so it isn’t noon local time it’s noon Eastern time. Plenty of time to finish another book though, as we just started.

PattyMacDotComma WoF PattyMacDotComma (I guess!)

Correction! Sorry, I got my Hannah/Hanna mixed up. And I don't know whether the award qualifies.

I read My Real Name Is Hanna by Tara Lynn Masih which won a Skipping Stones Honor Award for 2018. (It's for multi-cultural and international books for young people.) It's a children's/YA (not graphic) novel about the Holocaust in Ukraine.

I read The Nightingale, a new book out by Kristin Hannah, which I haven't reviewed yet, but it was a frightening, terrific YA book about the Holocaust in Ukraine."

Also, just checking that you linked the correct book. The Nightingale was from 2015, not a YA, and set in France.

Sorry, Kristie. I was actually reading The Nightingale but interrupted it to read My Real Name Is Hanna, and I corrected my earlier post. If it doesn't meet the criteria, that's okay. It was a NetGalley book and I enjoyed reading it anyway!

I read Amsterdam winner of the Man Booker 1998.
There was some great use of language, although I will admit I was glazing over during some of the detailed description of musical composition (just not my thing). But wow, the ending, somehow I just didn't quite see that coming . . . Wow, lol

You are all set! The only qualifications were that it was read beginning to end during the toppler and that it won a national award that is not readers choice. I will accept international. I just didn't want any smaller state or local awards.

I read The Sellout. It was 3 star for me. Very well written - I can see why it won Man Booker prize. As a reader, I was shocked by the level of bitterness contained in the pages. I was horrified by the uncomfortable truths it contained re: everyday racism, sexism and class consiousness.

I will be thinking about this novel for a long time and may well increase my rating.

I read it and enjoyed it, Margo. I know I missed many bits of cleverness that other readers picked up. You might enjoy reading some other reviews. Here's mine. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
