It's time to hunt!

Official poster:

Find the words below in the book you are currently reading and write the sentence including that word along with book title and author.

All words that are derived from the words in the list are accepted (example: snow- snowy- snowfall).

You don't need to find all words, just write what you found and share the sentence (or a paragraph if you like). Who knows, we might get intrigued and read along with you!

1. AFRAID
2. EMPATHY
3. FEAST
4. FIREPLACE
5. JOURNAL
6. MEDICINE
7. MIND
8. PASSION
9. SNOW
10. WISH

Challenge is inspired by Tome Topple word hunt.

So I'll start.

* "Meanwhile," said Mr Tumnus, " it is winter in Narnia, and has been for ever so long, and we shall both catch cold if we stand here talking in the snow. Daughter of Eve from the far land of Spare Oom where eternal summer reigns around the bright city of War Drobe, how would it be if you came and had a tea with me?"

*"Madness, you mean?" said the Professor quite coolly." Oh, you can make your minds easy about that. One has only to look at her and talk to her to see that she is not mad."

Yay, I'm so excited! I unexpectedly started graduate school in October and it's been so hectic. I have the entire month of December off so I'll be searching for all these words.

Also, I've never done a word search challenge but it looks so fun.

How are folks doing with this?

Cheryl | 18 comments Hey RM & Di! What happens if you read multiple books at a time? I'm always reading between 2 to 4 books at a go.

Di | 402 comments Mod
Then you search the words from all of them. There is no limit. Best of luck!

I made a bookmark with all the words written on it. I also sort of guess what word might come up (I'm reading one about a high school girl who is sick so I'm aware of the words medicine, afraid, and wish).

What could be better than revenge? “There’s nothing else I want.”
“I can make you a drüskelle again.”
“Are you a magician, then? A wej sprite who grants wishes? I’m superstitious, not stupid.”

Cheryl | 18 comments This is my contribution! I decided to use only 1 book as I'm not at my best at this time of year and I also changed a couple of the "winter" words to "summer" ones as we're beginning to swealter on this side of the planet now.

1. AFRAID

“Unicorns are nearly extinct,” Father Michael said. He was speaking in hushed, reverent tones as though [afraid] of Galliel. “So it is rare to encounter one, even in a house of God, but it is rarer still to have the ability to see one.”

2. EMPATHY - X

3. FEAST - X

4. POOL

“Hungry,” the stout one said. Drool oozed from his fanged mouth to [pool] on the stones at his feet. “Trollsss tassste bad. Kill humansss now?”

5. JOURNAL -

Shiny new building façades are just the candy coating, created to hide a rotten, oozing center. These days there’s a shortage of [journal]ists brave enough to bite into that story and get to the festering heart of the matter.

6. MEDICINE -

My appointment with the city vampires wasn’t for a few more hours.

I had time for shopping. With an empty fridge, and nearly bare [medicine] cabinet after Jinx had a nasty fall last month, we were not prepared for an assault on the city.

7. MIND -

I wasn’t surprised that I forgot Jinx telling me about a new client. Handling certain objects was especially difficult and left my [mind] in a fog.

8. PASSION - X

9. SUN -

A wall of heat hit me like a ton of bricks straight from the kiln. The [sun] was low in the sky leaving lengthening shadows in its wake, but temps remained in the triple digits.

10. WISHES -

Speaking of payment, I still owed the glaistig. The Green Lady had held up her end of the bargain. She could ask for not just one, but two [wishes], at any time. So far, I hadn’t heard from her, but I knew that someday she would collect.

10/10 FOUND THEM ALL! YAY!

1. Afraid:
"Beautiful girl,
the peace you've been searching for
can be found in your heart.
So let it ache, let it fall,
for underneath those untamed forces
you will find your love.
Your ultimate silence,
a truth the world will always be
too afraid to hear" page 309 Broken Flowers

2. Empathy
"I don't have any empathy to spare for the man in that photograph." page 276 Two Can Keep a Secret

3. Feast
"Instead, during the Christmas holiday, I partake in the annual feast with dishes of my own, including my Christmas spice cake." page 141 Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me

4. Fireplace
"They were in the living room, the gas fireplace logs glowing, and mugs of hot chocolate and a tray of popcorn between them on the coffee table." Chapter 5? I returned this to the library without noting the page I got the quote from, whoops! Losing Gabriel

5. Journal
"...exhumed corpses to study human anatomy; he kept mysterious journals in illegible reverse handwriting" page 59 The Da Vinci Code

6. Medicine
(side note- this is the most boring sentence to a very fantastic book)
"He took his medicine now." page 263 The Wicker King

7. Mind:
"You can have anything if you set your mind to it." page 125 Genuine Fraud

8. Passion:
"Jory chattered in a stream of quick, witty observations about ballooning and Michael's passion for it. Melissa dropped her head against the seat and watched the cloudless blue sky shoot past." Chapter 1 (I don't know the page because I'm reading it on my kindle) Always and Forever

9. Snow
"I often take photos of the posters showing the prohibited items you can't take through security to use as an outline for preparing my own zombie prep kit and it's interesting how they subtly change from airport to airport... at our airport it says you can't bring in snow globes. Swear to God. Snow globes. page 125 Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things

10. Wish
"Standing there at the window, she found herself holding her breath like she used to when she was young, because that would bring what she wished for." page 13ish Waking Kate

RM(Alwaysdaddygirl) (alwaydaddygirl) | 541 comments Phone about to die. Kudos Cheryl and Kim!

I'm now wanting so badly to find a manual that contains any of the words! Keep an eye on my thread (I'm just editing my original list) for any fun surprises.

message 29: by Jason (last edited Sep 19, 2020 02:30AM) (new)

Jason Sullivan (jasonrsullivan) | 10 comments So on this one I am posting some of my own words. I am not posting for self-promotion but rather in writing I poured my heart out on the table. So this is both quote and share. If it's not ok please let me know and I will take it down. So here goes...

1. AFRAID- We are choosing to drift down a river of despair on our own terms. We are attempting to rewire the DNA of a socially developed creature that is afraid of failing. Failing and confirming that there was never any control of the truths which threatened to undo us. It is a losing battle, and therefore we program our minds to determine our value based on the lowest common denominator.

2. EMPATHY- The ability to show grace, mercy, empathy only come from an experiential base of loss and the loss which frees the anxious mind is the very loss that has the potential perpetuate the cycle. Ahab was driven by woundedness to self-destruction, Jean Valjean was driven by chaos and order learning the intricate measures and steps of the dance, in the end, Valjean emerged as the wounded protagonist fuller more aware and capable of mercy.
We are both Ahab and Jean Valjean, Myriel and Javert the question that with which we are left is between the extremes how do we dance?

3. FEAST- X
4. FIREPLACE- X
5. JOURNAL-X

6. MEDICINE- My therapist encouraged me to visit a doctor and begin medication for my Anxiety Disorder. I was completely shocked. “Am I that crazy that I need meds? I exercise, I am a vegetarian, I am healthy! Why would I need meds?”

7. MIND- Intimacy requires us to disrobe our defenses in moments that our anxious minds deem as high risk. If we risk, by default, we face the possibility of failure, embarrassment, and full exposure in the full glory of our weakness and fear. Yet, deep inside the recesses of our minds, this is what we are hardwired to seek out.

8. PASSION- Hyper-vigilance in its exhaustive fury reduces the individual to numbness and abandonment of passion. The perception of intimacy through this continually shifting lens is no less turbulent. Intimacy requires patience, risk, defenselessness, consistency and most importantly transparency.

9. SNOW- X

10. WISH- Over the years I have found that shame has robbed me of many joys. As a survivor of abuse I was taught that I am a burden that had to be tolerated. I remember with great clarity the screams, “I hate you! I wish you had never been born! I am going to kill you!” Those words did more damage to the heart of a young boy than all the physical abuse combined. I believed those words and in some ways still struggle not to.

Quiet Chaos Jason R. Sullivan
