My nomination for alternate history is Fatherland by Robert Harris. For space opera I nominate Pandora's Star by Peter F. Hamilton.
I'll nominate SS-GB by Len Deighton for Alternate History, and Ringworld by Larry Niven for Space Opera.
I nominate What Mad Universe? by Frederic Brown in both Space Opera ans Alternative History categories.
I haven't read it, but Wikipedia says--"Having as a science fiction editor rather despised space opera, he finds himself living in a "Mad Universe" where the most cliché aspects of that subgenre are an actual, daily reality. " maybe I'll read it to see if it is Space Opera.
Richard Buro posted on the poll page: "A suggestion for Alternative History is Bombs Away by Harry Turtledove. Recognized by many as a good author of Alternate History, the book noted is the first of his The Hot War series."

Please make your suggestions for book reads that fit into either (or both!) of these themes. As per usual, all suggestions made in this topic will be listed in a poll in a few days' time so that we can vote on the two books for the monthly group read.
If a book has featured in a previous group read in the last 12 months, please do not suggest it for this next group read. You may, however, feel free to repeat any earlier unsuccessful suggestions you (or anybody else) made in previous nomination topics.
