I'm looking for a history book for my dad for Christmas. He's into European history, particularly the middle ages and Renaissance. Previous hits have been a history of Europe as told by manuscripts and a history according to beet.

If you think that he might like something a little "different" see if you can find any of Sabine Baring-Gould couple of hundred little monographs. The man was absolutely prolific and wrote on just about everything. Mostly things we would consider utter tripe, but for his time, he was a very interesting man. Or just see if you can find a book ABOUT him.
Curious Myths of the Middle Ages (by him)
Sabine Baring-Gould: The Life and Work of a Complete Victorian (about him.)
