Hi everyone!
The December winner is Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively.

As always please be mindful of posting spoilers by using the spoiler tag to hide anything that might ruin it for others. Or put a disclaimer at the beginning of your comment, hit space a few times, and then comment whatever you want. It's also helpful to write what chapter you are talking about at the top of your comment so others know if it might potentially spoil them.

Happy reading!

Hanneke | 23 comments I started to read Moon Tiger today and, after 3 pages, I must say that the tone of voice in which Ms Lively writes is just irresistible. I can already predict this will be a witty and wise book to read and I will enjoy it very much.

Sylvie | 5 comments I've nearly fiinished Moon Tiger. I'll avoid spoilers as much as possible but sometimes it's not easy to avoid mentioning certain episodes.
To start the ball rolling:
what I found most interesting are Claudia's ideas and views; the minutiae of life forms, among other things; the evocation of places, especially Egypt where Lively spent a few years of her childhood (see her lovely memoir, "Oleander, Jacaranda"); and the description of events.

Hanneke | 23 comments I am half way. Simply love the book! What I find so wonderfully done is how Lively can very naturally switch from one paragraph to the other the point of view, thoughts and words of the characters, even in the same conversation. So cleverly done and not feeling unnatural in the slightest. Very witty too!

Kelly_Hunsaker_reads ... I finished, and while I enjoyed it I have loved other MBers much more.

Maggie Rotter (themagpie45) | 3 comments I absolutely love this book. I'm a sucker for the framing device of old person nearing death reflecting on past life while interacting with caregivers who only know her present self. What a life it was. I was brought to tears, to laughter and to admiration of a woman who did it her way.

Linda (lindaleehall) | 3 comments I am only a couple of chapters in, but really enjoying this book. Trying not to read too fast so that I can savour it.

message 10: by Hanneke (new)

Hanneke | 23 comments I am so glad I joined in for this book! I had not expected it to be such a marvellous book. Some 50 pages to go.

message 11: by Paula (new)

Paula I'm not disappointed with Moon Tiger, its characters, or the author's style for the telling of the story. But I have a few curve balls, sliders and fast balls coming my way right now and my bookish self is needing to take a break.

Nooo!

I'll return to Moon Tiger when I can and possibly even return to this discussion thread to make comments. I'm glad you're enjoying it everyone. Your positive remarks give me hope for when I can get back to reading like a crazy woman.

Hanneke | 23 comments Finished the book today. I am so glad to have read it. Absolutely loved it. I put a review with the book.

message 13: by Claire (new)

Claire | 3 comments I think it is a great book, one of the best I read this year. It’s strange it is not that well known. Thanks for the encouragement by putting it on thr december list!

I just finished the book and I really enjoyed the writing and the structure. I think I will re-read it next year because I was so busy with work when I read the book that somehow how couldn't quite connect with the story. Not the book's fault, though... Hence: re-read.

Gill Smith | 1 comments Thanks to all who proposed this book. I may not have picked this up otherwise and I am now drawn to Lively’s writing style, scene setting and character formations. Claudia stole my heart. Great lady.

Think I will pick up Heatwave soon-ish.
