Josh was Marethyu (or vice-versa, Marethyu was Josh?) Like, seriously, OH MY GOSH, WHAT AN AMAZING TWIST ENDING, RIGHT? I personally think Scott did an unbelievable job of not showing that Josh becomes/was Marethyu. The ONLY little clue to this was the one part in The Enchantress when Marethyu wanted to see Josh and Sophie share their last laugh (about the Witch of Ednor breaking out in hives due to an allergic reaction). So, did you even have a clue that Josh would become Marethyu, or did it hit you like a bullet train?

Not at all. I thought Josh was gonna end up evil.

But I thought it didn't mention that the shadowrealm had no snakes until the epilogue?

I foresaw it, when Marethyu was first mentioned, I had this itch that it would be Josh. BUT IT WAS STILL SO DARN EPIC, THOUGH. ALL MY FEELZ ARE COMING BACK AGAIN. ALL DEM FEELZ.

There has been so much screaming throughout this thread. LOL

Am I the only one who kinda wanted a happy ending for Sophie & Josh? The whole Marethyu thing blew me out of the water don't get me wrong. It's just I wanted more closure with the twins, Sophie especially as Scott didn't really hint much of what Sophie was feeling the entire time :l

I just was so blown away by the whole thing. I remember that I couldn't talk for the rest of the day and I kept muttering "Ohmigod Ohmigod Ohmigod". My mom says she almost drove me straight to the doctor's office.

IKR!!! The sad thing is none of my other friends will read the series because they're "too scared" even though half of them are super tough.

"too scared" lol, what? I just rented my 10 year old sister The Alchemyst earlier today!

Haha I thought they loved to read like me but I guess not. They're too busy rereading the Harry Potter series 17 times. In a row.

Sometimes they like to "mix it up" and start with the last book and go backwards.

I haven't even read Harry Potter or seen any of the movies. lol. I don't see anything wrong with rereading a book or the series, but they should be more open and read more stuff! haha

OMIGOSH, no definately NOT the only one - GOSH, I wanted a happy ending, too, but I suppose this one gave a sort of spin on things..

Hold on, there were some real problems with Josh becoming Marethyu, and some bad time travel paradoxes as well. Dee has the swords of power, while Marethyu, has the swords turned to metal, and formed into his hook of power, at the same time!?! WTF! Marethyu, was given the completed Codex, on the Island, but Josh has one too with the pages torn out, which he adds the pages to--so there are two Codex'!?! Why if josh is Marethyu, does he allow Dee to burn London to the ground, why does he let Flamel search in vain for hundreds of years for the Twins of Fable, why does he give the Codex to Flamel in the first place, and which Codex is it, is Josh a Neanderthal, why was he kept for all those years by his parents, why not just raise him, and train him, and make him immortal like they did for Dee?!? No answers, are forthcoming. The time travel was handled so badly, that it makes the whole series not worth reading, and Scott should have know better.

Honestly, I don't like any books with time travel, cause they hurt my head. lol. Josh technically didn't become Marethyu until after all the events of the first 5 books, right? Well, if Marethyu interfered with several of the events (i.e. allowing Dee to burn London to the ground), don't you think he might've jeopardized his existence?

I don't know. Scott made Marethyu out to be pretty much all powerful, so I suppose he would just create a ley gate and move away, to a shadow realm where time was different. Honestly, the time travel ruined this series for me. Going back in time is so tricky, and needs to be done with the upmost care, and Scott doesn't get it.

Scott also failed to tie up a bunch of plot lines well. Like Flamel, and Perry. Marethyu/josh, could have easily make them immortal for good, or given them the Codex again, when he took them to Paris, but his is all left out, and we don't have a clue what happened. I so wanted them to be made immortal, with no strings attached. The Dare, Scathach plot lines, were left un-finished, and Dee dying in 8000 B.C. does nothing to prevent him from being born again in the 16th century. What about Billy and Machiavelli? We don't know, and presumably Scott does not care, as he gave us nothing to really go on. I think I could have written a better ending to this series.

Yes, this last book is a real mess. I have been thinking of writing a better "Fan Fiction" ending just so I have some closure.

I love the book and it did not shock me for i felt thst would happen

But I thoug..." When Joan and The Shadow were sent into "the past", they remark on how they havent seen any snakes.
