Advertisers and others have gone to great lengths to assure us subliminals do not work, trotting out the results of “exhaustive studies,” “consumer poll results” and “extensive research” that point to the results of subliminal messaging being fairly ambiguous at best. One study quoted by Wikipedia claims “subliminal messages produce only one-tenth of the effects of detected messages”.

However, there is credible research that shows subliminal stimuli often sparks actions someone intended to perform. In other words, actions can be subliminally prompted if someone was already planning to carry out that action, but it will not force them to do something they weren’t already thinking of doing.

Conspiracy theorists go much further than that and often state or imply many or even most of our everyday actions are the result of subliminal messages we have seen or heard. They argue we receive so many subliminals throughout our lives that it has a cumulative effect which, when added up, amounts to mind control.

So there you have it: the two extremes. As is often the case, the truth may be somewhere in the middle. Or is it?

Many independent researchers have come to the shocking conclusion that we are being bombarded with so many subliminals every day it’s virtually impossible not to be influenced by them in some way.

And science may be beginning to support the claims of these researchers. For example, very recent studies involving functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have revealed that subliminals activate crucial regions of the brain including the hippocampus, the amygdala, the primary visual cortex and the insular cortex. These latest scientific studies directly contradict 20th Century research.

Our own research has revealed major corporations – in the US especially – are investing tens of millions of dollars into subliminal advertising each year. Some are even hiring subliminal experts to covertly influence consumers into buying their products and services.

Which begs the question: why do these corporations so frequently use subliminal advertising and spend so much of their precious marketing campaign budgets on it if they don’t believe it sways customers and boosts sales?

A similar question could be asked of politicians and political parties who attempt to sway voters with subliminal advertising. American voters have long been concerned about the incidence of such advertising on their television and computer screens leading up to elections.

Lee | 26 comments The police in Witchita used a subliminal aimed at the, then unknown serial killer Dennis Rader aka BTK. The subliminal message urged him to phone the chief investigator,it was spliced into a news report but didn't have the desired effect.

Jim (jimliedeka) I suspect subliminal messages have an effect but in limited circumstances and in limited ways. Someone who knew precisely what those circumstances and ways are would have a pretty useful tool. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that some of that is used in marketing and in political propaganda.

There's many famous cases of corporations and others using subliminals in advertising...Coca-Cola being one example. Some 'experts' say their effectiveness is limited. Others say the opposite.

James Morcan | 11380 comments This news article today caught my eye as it briefly mentions this subject:

Turkey rejects Europe's 'red line' criticism on press freedom, suggests it may bring back death penalty http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-11-02...

Here's the relevant excerpt: "Journalists at the paper were suspected of seeking to precipitate the coup through "subliminal messages" in their columns before it happened, the state-run Anadolu agency said."

However, I'm not totally sure if that literally means subliminal messages, or whether the article is meaning it in a broad sense.

Jim (jimliedeka) I wasn't impressed by the article. Obvious design choices aren't subliminal. Did anybody not know that the NBC logo is peacock?

In the latter half, author, and expert in subliminal communication, Eldon Taylor, discussed the many ways in which our culture has been trained to conform and how this agenda serves to distract the masses as well as manipulate their behavior. There are many subconscious processes that people aren't aware of, and government and marketers have spent billions to learn how to plumb the depths of the unconscious, he cited. Using magnetic resonance imaging of the brain, he said, it's been shown that people's decisions are made six seconds ahead of the conscious mind, which calls into question the notion of free will.

People are increasingly living in media echo chambers, taking in sound bites that reflect their own viewpoints, and political stances, rather than looking at news in an independent fashion. If there's an agenda of control being applied, and people are aware of the techniques being used on them, then they can be empowered, he continued. "If you're going to have any kind of free will...you're going to have to take time to discover what's in your own subconscious, and look at the things that are motivating you, and what the psychological underpinnings are," he added.

John Graham Wilson | 154 comments Subliminals most certainly do work. Many years ago I used them on oppositional teenagers to get them to shut up and concentrate on classroom activity (quarter-second inserts I placed in a PowerPoint display). They can be used for good or ill. (Yuk, yuk.)
