Part 1

(view spoiler)[Oooh I love this world so far! The beauty of historical high society Paris mixed with fantastical magic is just amazing. This is slowly becoming my new ideal world to live in.

I'm interested to learn more about the Forging aspect and the backstory of Severin and his gang. It's very interesting so far!

Part 2

(view spoiler)[I love a good fantasy heist and this book is giving me just that!

So I'm already shipping Severin and Laila. I know they had their moment before the book started and they're both keen to put it behind them, but I think they both doth protest too much!

Also, Laila's backstory is fascinating. I love grotesque elements in my fantasy and it doesn't get any more grotesque and shocking than a doctor taking a stillborn baby and stitching them into a live person. It's giving me vibes of The Island of Dr Moreau and The Madman's Daughter. Love it.

I like how we have a lot of mixed ethnicities in this book. Also, we have hints of different sexualities with Enrique maybe interested in Hypnos, and Hypnos is interested in anything with a pulse, it would seem.

The friendships between the characters are great too. I want to be in this group and friends with all these people. They're just so precious and dear to me already haha.

(view spoiler)[Ah the sexual tension between Laila and Severin is just too much. That dance scene. Oooh what a scene. I'm shipping them so hard.

Also, I think there might be a little thing between Zofia and Enrique. I think they like each other. Also shipping them.

I knew that guy in the mustard suit would turn out to be bad news. I had a feeling when they got the Horus Eye that something would happen and it wouldn't be plain sailing. But for some reason, I thought maybe Hypnos would betray them.

(view spoiler)[I cannot put into words how much I loved this book and how dear these characters are to my heart! Every chapter I was like this person is my fave, and then the next chapter I was like no they're my fave. The only character that I didn't really connect to was Tristan and I think that was because we had no POV of him, and he wasn't in the forefront of a lot of the others' POVs like Hypnos was. His death was still tragic though!

I've spent the whole book rooting for Severin and Laila and willing them to just admit they want to be together, and then Severin ruins it by pushing her away! That line about how he can't be insulted by someone who isn't even real broke my heart! And then the next chapter when she's in his bed and I thought he would give in and he's still being stubborn and they're breaking my heart. I hope in the next book with all the bed-sharing they're going to do, something happens. Can y'all just bone already, please?!?!?!

OOOOOO and that ending though! Severin isn't the true heir to House Vanth. Then who is? And why was Severin led to believe he was????????????????

I need the next book like today please!!!!!!!!

Not very far into it but there’s definitely a Six of Crows vibe.

I'm going to finish one of my reads before starting this cause I'm reading too many books at once at this stage hahaha oops. I've heard it has six of crow vibes from quite a few people <3

Yeah, I'm seeing the six of crow vibes now within the first couple chapters.

Part One: (view spoiler)[The world is so fascinating so far. I'm loving the element of magic incorporated into the book and I also love that it isn't overpowering the world. I'm a little confused about what the order of Babel is at this stage but as I get into the book more I'm sure I'll understand.

I'm not finding the characters too interesting but I do quite like Zofia and Enrique. I'd love to know more of their backgrounds and who they are to that group. (hide spoiler)]

I'm finding the beginning and how the world and magic system work a bit confusing. I have been introduced to Severin who seems to be some sort of bounty hunter. (hide spoiler)]

Severin took the deal and has a binding contract tattoo. It was revealed that when Severin was tested for the inheritance of his house, the rest was falsified and he was denied as a patriarch (hide spoiler)]

Part I: (view spoiler)[I guess, so far, I'm intrigued but not entirely sold. I'm loving the banter between the characters, but I'm still not used to the world and it feels like it was thrown a little hastily at the reader. Though it also could have been because I was reading in a busy place and had a bit more trouble focusing.

The character dynamics were fantastic, especially when Hypnos was thrown into the mix. But I never grasped how magic worked in the book. I kind of just gave up trying to understand it and just acknowledged it was there.

Does anyone understand the significance of Laila finding the missing birds in Tristan's workshop? He defeathered them and all, so was his mind broken before he was tortured? Also, how is Severin not the true heir of House Vanth? I need answers! (hide spoiler)]

I feel like the book has started very suddenly and the world and its system it's not really well explained. It's now that I'm starting to get in the story. There seems to be magic in the world but I don't really understant how it is supposed to work. (hide spoiler)]

Up to page 127: (view spoiler)[I'm still shaky on my understanding of the whole Forged stuff and what exactly the Fragments do... like, they're super powerful? And there was this whole rule about two rings needed to reveal a Fragment's location, except Severin was like "if he brings the ring to the location and looks through the Horus Eye, he'll know where it is." But if you already know the location, why do you need to look through the Eye to find it...? Maybe I got that wrong, but I tried to read it over a few times and it still didn't make sense to me.

But as much as the worldbuilding confuses me, I'm still enjoying it because of the characters! I really do like their relationships, at least what I've seen of it so far, and the idea that Severin wants his heritage back not just because of power but because then he can help his friends and they won't have to leave... that's so sad. Up to page 226: (view spoiler)[Hmm... actually, I don't think I'm that into the characters. I was liking the banter, but then it became excessive and kinda repetitive. The puzzles are also going over my head, so there's not much in this world to keep me intrigued.

I am wondering about what the bees mean, and who the man bothering Severin and Zofia is, but... I don't know, this book is now kinda ish. (hide spoiler)]

Up to end of part 4: (view spoiler)[I don't have much to say about what I just read. Tristan being captured actually wasn't that surprising, considering they just... left him there. Into the catacombs they go, at least that should be interesting! (hide spoiler)]

Finished! (view spoiler)[So, I guess I'm going to be rating this 3 stars. In the end the messy worldbuilding threw me off too much, I found the dialogue that was supposed to be funny often annoying. I also wish they would have felt a bit more in depth... I feel like the whole puzzles and world shadowed them and kept me from getting to know them better.

And uhhhh you know what? I'm more annoyed than anything that the author decided to have Tristan have done that to the birds. It doesn't make me feel sympathy for him, instead it just makes Tristan seem obsessive and malicious. Sure... Severin wanted to become patriarch, but he never said he would leave Tristan behind. Maybe Roshani Chokshi didn't show Tristan's insecurities strongly enough to make me feel pity for him.

So Tristan doing that is just... ugh. Like I said, obsessive, malicious, crazy. He loved his tarantula so much, but then he sees it fit to go torture other animals. (hide spoiler)]

As response to your question about the ending: (view spoiler)[Remember all the references to how Severin wanted to spread his wings and claim what had been taken from him? He wanted to be free, fly, etc. So, in my opinion, Tristan saw the birds and hated that they were flying and free—because that's what he didn't want Severin to do. He hated that Severin wanted to become patriarch, and wanted himself (Tristan) to be enough instead.

So to him, the birds were a symbol. I'm not getting the book to quote this directly, but when Laila read the memory, she saw Tristan whispering something like "See? It's not so bad to stay on the ground/not fly." It was like the bird was Severin, and Tristan was telling him "not flying is okay" because he didn't want Severin to. (hide spoiler)]

Part 1, ch 5 - (view spoiler)[ A little slow at the start. I feel like the world-building was a little convoluted. It confused and distracted me, so when the heist plot started, I wasn't sure what was happening. But now I'm starting to get that Six of Crows feeling and I'm eager to continue. (hide spoiler)]

Part 2, Ch 12 - (view spoiler)[ Oh Hypnos's feelings got hurt. He seems a little too "in the know" about all their plans. Could this all be an act? Could he be trying to consolidate all the house powers under himself? I don't trust him. (hide spoiler)]
Part 3, Ch 19 - (view spoiler)[ Ooo, I don't like that guy! Something tells me his "revolution" is just a bid to put everyone under a dictator rule. I wonder if Severin will be able to convince Hypnos to do the inheritance test before this new deadline. It seems to me if he is able to get his house's ring back, it would be one less ring in the hands of this dude.

Oh, and can anyone explain to me this whole thing about the different fathers he has? I thought it was just weird that he referred to his father as Wrath for a while, but now that he is remembering other fathers named after the other sins, I am totally and completely confused. (hide spoiler)]

Part 6, Ch 35 - (view spoiler)[ NOOOOOOO!!! Not Tristan! Ok, now I am so angry that this book didn't just stop at Part 5. I was so happy then and thought Severin would claim his inheritance and then they would go after Laila's book in the next book. I'm going to go ugly cry. (hide spoiler)]
Finished - (view spoiler)[ And more ugly crying! I get that Severin is hurting, but to treat Laila that way was horrible. I hope she wears him down on this trip.

Ok, so I was really upset that the book didn't end back in part 5. I was devastated when Tristan died and yet the book kept going. However, I have to admit that the author knew what she was doing because now I'm so wrapped up in the drama between Severin and Laila that I can't NOT read the next one. Nice little hook there. Chapter 4(view spoiler)[ This is far better than I expected. What a great crew of characters! I am definitely liking Zofia, Tristan and Severin the best. This seems a lot like Six of Crows which makes me like it even more! (hide spoiler)]

Finished (view spoiler)[ Wow! This was amazing! Zofia was my favourite character! I can't believe that end, but it was so good. It makes so much sense that Tristan died. He really was broken. It was terrible that we went through the book thinking the whole missing bird thing in the garden was just comedic relief and then it turns out it was Tristan being seriously broken! It was terrible how everyone drifted away from eachother, especially Severin. I LOVED this book. At least I only have to wait until next month I think for the sequel. (hide spoiler)]

Oh gee, sorry! I haven't found time to start this one yet, the book I was reading took a bit longer than expected. I'll definitely be starting tomorrow though!

I am also interested joining! I am still middle of another book but after couple days I can be with you. I noticed from the book's page that people who has liked this would like Sorcery of Thorns as well. I have read it and liked. But is there anything similar in this book with SoT? One of my GR-friends has read this and rated 4/5!

I loved this book! It is sort of similar to Sorcery of Thorns. The writing is similar and the period it is set in is similar. No cool demons I am afraid or talking books, but lots of objects that have magical properties. Otherwise, the characters, magic and plot are different. But, it is well worth the read!
