why do you think some people can see, sense the presence of ghosts, while others can go through life without ever seeing or sensing a spirit or ghost?

message 2: by Laura (new)

Laura Iverson (zenbreeze) I think some people see them and don't realize it. the only time I know I saw a ghost was at a slumber party when I was a kid. We were running through the house, as kids do, and I saw this old lady sitting at the kitchen table. After I ran past her, I realized there was no one in the house like that, looked back and she was gone. I didn't tell anyone at the time but, thinking about it later, I suspect she was the grandmother (or some relation) of the girl whose birthday it was.

message 3: by Robert (new)

Robert Roberts (goodreadscomrobertroberts) When I was fifteen and my sister was nineteen we were in Kansas and she was driving. It was in the fall of the year on an afternoon. I looked up in front of us and there was a dark silhouette of a boy followed by a dog, running across the road in front of us.It seemed they were in slow motion. When we got closer there was nothing around. We got out of the car and it was just flat fields with no ditches. There is no where they could have gone. We guessed they had been run over and killed sometime in the past. Who knows?

Billie's Not So Secret Diary (billiesnotsosecretdiary) | 24 comments I was around 7 or 8 and we just came back from a vacation, while we were gone my cat was killed on the RR tracks. A few weeks later I was outside helping my dad get chores done for the night, and I swear, that cat, short tail and all, was sitting by the pole she was buried next to, looking at me.

message 5: by Lisa (new)

Lisa On my little sisters 7th birthday,we had a small family get together. We took loads of pictures. There were no kids there that day besides my sister. When we got the pictures developed, there was one, and only one, with a little boy leaning over her ballerina cake poised like he was going to blow out the candles!! It was not a ghostly image,it appeared like a real person. But we had no little boy there! Whatever it was we never figured out. But if it was a "ghost" it must have been a friendly one!

Lisa, that's really creepy. You never asked if a little boy died in the house?

message 7: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda (rkoti) | 2 comments I have seen, heard, smelled, and felt ghostly presences. The house I grew up in was a former army hospital so lots of spirits hanging around.

I think everyone has the ability to sense ghosts but because of their fear or religious upbringing, they choose to close that ability off.

My mom would never admit to sensing ghostly presences although many things happened in our home that she could not explain..but she was afraid if she gave in and said "yes it is a ghost"- if she admitted it, she would experience it more so instead she chose to say "it's just the wind" ect because she did not want to experience it.

message 8: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda (rkoti) | 2 comments Here is one to chill you: The house I grew up in was a former hospital. It was 3 stories high that had been converted later to an apartment building.

The operating room was on the second floor, we knew this because the floor under the carpet was sloped concrete- it- no wood at the bottom of walls-- and there was a drain in the middle of that floor.

Why the operating room was on the second floor, I do not know.

We lived on the bottom floor and my parents leased the whole building so they rented to several tenants over a 10 year period of time.

Everyone who lived in that one apartment all claimed to hear a little boy running up and down the hallway crying for his father. "Daddy, daddy" is all the child would say-- if the tenant went to the doorway of the hallway, the running and voice would stop but as soon as the person went back in the room and sat down, the voice and steps would start up again.

One tenant moved out because he was afraid something was going to happen to his own son. Other tenants ignored the child.

It is my understanding the child more than likely died on the operating table but is unaware he is dead and continues to search for his father.

But I dont really know for sure what happened.

Wow that's a great story. I also lived in a haunted house. The house was in Farmington Michigan, we lived there for 3 years, I was around 10 years old when we moved there. It was a ranch style house with a huge basement, that consisted of three rooms and a small room under the stairs that was used for pantry. The walls, in that small room under the stairs, were made out of stones and that was only wall in the house that was made out of stone.
My mom would catch all of us kids at the top of the stairs looking down at the basement in the dark. She would ask what we were doing and we responded with ....wait for it.......we're waiting to see what comes up.
Were we creepy kids or what? Lol
The kids never wanted to go downstairs, especially alone. We had to get food from the pantry and it was always very quick because we knew one of those days we would open the pantry door and see something. I don't know how but we knew that someone got buried behind the stone wall alive.
We would find 29-39 dead birds around the house. Some would crash into our windows, at the walls and a few we would find hung on our tree with a string around their necks. We don't know where the strings were from.

Few years after moving out, we went back to see the house. There was another family living there and they said that they never had anything strange happen to them. We saw that the basement was used as the kid's rooms! We felt very bad for those kids.

Robert Roberts (goodreadscomrobertroberts) Wow, sounds like you have some skeletons in your closet, literally. I can relate to the bar restrooms, you don't get much more terrifying than that, especially if you wake up on the floor of one the next morning.

Holly | 2 comments A friend saw my great-grandmother while she was sleeping over once when we were kids.

I've never actually seen one, but I have seen stuff that they do. I hope that makes sense. Lol

You have seen ghosts move stuff Holly? Is that what you mean?

message 13: by Robert (new)

Robert Roberts (goodreadscomrobertroberts) What if...there was to come a time that you were alone in your house, and you actually saw with your own eyes a distinct apparition. Maybe even more that once.
What if... you were alone and saw a UFO, and it was obvious that it was more technologically advanced than anything on Earth.
Now here are the real questions!
Would you tell someone that you are close too? Like a spouse, family member or best friend.
Do you really think down deep, that they would believe you, and what if they didn't?

My mom swears there was a ghost in the house I grew up in. I never saw or felt it, but my mom and step dad did. We lived close to a graveyard, maybe it was from there???

I think if you were alone and saw a ghost or UFO, you're on your own. :)
The majority of your friends and family will say they believe you but in reality they will think it was probably something other than a ghost or UFO.
After a while you yourself will start to question if you really did see what you thought you did.

Kelsey Bohl (kelseywbohl) | 1 comments For my 16th birthday me and a few friends spent the night at the Myrtles plantation in St. Francisville,LA. We walked around the grounds for hours filming with my moms video camera. We didn't see any ghosts that night, but when we got home and watched the film on TV there was footage of us walking around the front of the house and peeking around the far corner of the huge wrap around porch you can see a little girl with long blonde hair peek around the corner and then back away from the porch. Super freaky. The story is there was a brother and sister living in the house and the housemaid Chloe poisoned the children in hopes they would just get sick, and she could show her usefulness by nursing them back to health. However, she put too much poison in their food, and they died. There's supposedly been about ten murders in that house.

Margaret (LoveMyFrogs) | 6 comments I have many many times when I was younger. I would see disembodied heads in this early 19th century house we lived in. I have seen my grandmother twice. others I have sensed. My daughter and one of my grandsons have as well. My daughter saw a old white man in one house we had lived in and a younger black man in an apartment we lived in. I always just said to them they could stay, but to not show themselves as they were scaring my daughter, and she never commented on seeing them again.

Yes, I think hearing them counts as a ghostly encounter.

Rhonda Stefani (rhonda72) | 41 comments In the 1st home my parents bought in FL I had a friend sleep over when I was about 10. We both got up to use the bathroom that night & walking thru the living room I saw an older man in a nice suit with glasses on & a hat. Things disappeared then reappeared all the time. My mom & I talked to an older neighbor and when I described him she said it sounded like Ronald the previous owner who had passed away in the house! After that, whenever something went missing my mom would yell "Ronald put that back!" And when she would go look whatever it was would be back!

message 20: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 1 comments When I was 15 I would always see this smokey gray thing hovering up near the ceiling in the corner of my bedroom. My feet were constantly freezing but only in my bedroom. There was a door which connected my bedroom & my younger brother. One night I had 2 girlfriends over & her sister (who was my BF) had told her about the smokey gray thing & my freezing feet but she scoffed at us .. that is until the door opened on it's own. Years later I found out that an old man had died in that room. And just a few years ago I was living with my youngest son & his family for a few months. He kept seeing a little girl who wasn't my gr.daughter. He heard voices that seemed to come from his pillow. I heard a child's laughter on our front porch. And once I heard a small child sadly say 'Mommy' in a corner of the nursery .. no one was there. We had Pittsburgh Paranormal Society come in, took photo's & recordings. They set up a deer camera in the basement (if you don't know what that is I'll be glad to explain). It caught a male figure. Also an image of what some say looks like Angel wings on a figure in the living room. I was told children liked my rooms & were fascinated with a musical humidor I had (carousel horses on it). So they did their thing for the more troublesome one's & about 2 weeks later I was going to sleep & I heard the musical humidor start to play .. I said please don't I'm trying to sleep & it stopped dead in the middle of a note lol. Never heard any voices & my son stopped seeing the little girl after that.

Ghosts' are a daily part of my life. I've been told I see them and hear them so easily because I am unafraid and do not doubt what I see. That fact got around work one day and a co-worker, who has become a dear friend, asked me if I could help her with an odd email. It happened instantly, as always. The same pretty lady with long brown hair that I had seen all day doing dance leaps down the hallway appeared to stand behind her. My body froze, my stomach ached, and I began to shake internally with urgency. I gave my friend her description and asked if she was a dancer. She said yes with excitement, that she was a dancer and then a dance mom at the studio where her children go. She had passed away and another friend The Godmother) had taken custody of her children to raise. She said her friend The godmother) has been getting weird e-mails with no return addy they just keep saying the letters URL...URL. I heard or more like felt the ghost say "Upper Right Leg". "There is something wrong with your' friends upper right leg." I said. "She needs to go to the doctor immediately!" She cried and thanked me about a week later when she told me her friend had indeed gone to the doctor where they found a huge blood clot in her upper right leg that was about to cut loose. It could have killed her but they got it out just in time. I saw the ghost once after that. She appeared in the passenger seat of my car and smiled at me. This time the feeling in me was tingly and calm. I know it was her way of saying thank you. I've never seen her again and the Godmother is healthy and happily raising her children. That is why I love my gift.

message 26: by Holly (new)

Holly (goldikova) I'm disappointed that I haven't seen a ghost. I have stayed in a haunted hotel.....nothing. I lived in a house where my dog could see ghosts, but I only ever saw a terrified pooch. My ex husband says that the house I own now is haunted, but I've never seen any evidence of it.

There is a ghost story tradition that hauntings are sometimes activated by doing work on the house. However, I have the crazy sense that my house loves me for all the restoration work I have been doing, bringing back it's former beauty.

..........or is it possible that my house is enslaving me and slowly driving me insane?

message 30: by Gmaharriet (new)

Gmaharriet I think I saw a ghost when I was about 6 years old. My mother used to come check on me in the middle of the night most nights.

One night I woke up and opened my eyes. She was standing across the room from me in her long blue nightgown, much as she did every night. She came over to the side of my bed and stood there, not saying anything to me or moving to tuck me in as I would have expected.

Wanting to let her know I was awake, I reached over to touch her...and my hand went right through her and her nightgown without any sensation to my hand.

I gave a yelp and moved back, pulling the blankets over my head and just lying there in sweaty terror for...I don't know how long...and eventually I fell back to sleep.

I asked her the next morning if she'd come in to check on me, and she told me no. For the longest time, I was afraid to open my eyes if I woke up at night for fear that the ghost in the blue nightgown might be standing over me.

message 35: by Christina (new)

Christina | 1 comments The house I just moved from was haunted by a little girl who looked to be about 8 years old. My daughter as the first to see her soon after we moved in. As we were leaving one day, she asked me who the little girl on our porch was. I was at the end of our very short driveway and there was no one visible on our porch. I asked her what she looked like and she gave me a very detailed description right down to hairstyle and type of shoes she had on. She was three at the time and there was no way she made up the description. A few months later I was home alone and went to check the mail. We had a glass door on the front of the house and when I turned to go back up the driveway I very clearly saw a young girl standing inside the door looking out at me. She exactly matched the description my daughter gave. We had numerous experiences in that house; hearing our names called, things being moved, lights turning on, radios and TVs turning on, footsteps, all the dining chairs pulled out one morning. Several friends had experienced there also. It's funny but now that we've moved I miss our little ghost girl.

Kelly I haven't seen any ghosts but there are some strange happenings in my house . At least once a day I feel something or someone brush up against me. The DVD player in my bedroom opens up in the middle of the night when it's not even turned on and I've had my alarm clock go off without it being set a few times as welll. I've also had items fall of the counter for no reason.....

Zechariah Foote | 12 comments I woke up one night screaming in pain and holding my knee. I felt a hole in my knee and I saw a picture frame from one of my shelves on the floor next to my bed. The picture frame flew off the shelf and struck my knee. I left the frame on the ground that night, and I remember being extremely irritated, muttering out of anger as I tried to go back to sleep. I woke up the next morning realizing how weird it actually was that the picture frame had flew off my shelf in the middle of the night. That may have been the closest I got to experiencing something paranormal.
