Roger Brandon Sanderson
Robert Jordan
Brent Weeks

The next two aren't my favorite writers for their books but personally I'm a fan of them.
Michael J Sullivan
Nicolas Eames

message 5: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 2369 comments It depends on the genre. Roger Zelazny for blends of SF & fantasy.

Karl Edward Wagner for S&S/horror, although I'm also very fond of Robert E. Howard for S&S.

Probably J.R.R. Tolkien for high fantasy, L.E. Modesitt Jr. or Steven Brust for regular fantasy.

I don't think I can pick a favorite SF author. I like quite a few.

Book Nerd (book_nerd_1) | 154 comments It's too hard to pick.

Sci-fi - Frank Herbert

Living Sci-Fi - Stephen Baxter and Alastair Reynolds

Fantasy - George R R Martin

kind of a weird in between thing - Richard Calder

horror - Stephen King

NekroRider | 512 comments All-time favourite author: Bernard Cornwell (historical fiction not SFF)

SFF:
Octavia Butler
Guy Gavriel Kay
Brandon Sanderson

Also slowly becoming rather fond of Robin Hobb's writing.

Used to be a big Tolkien and Jordan fan but it's been way too long since I read anything by either. Really need to re-read to see if I'd still consider them among my favourites.

Andy | 130 comments Hard one to answer. If I go by favourite book it would be different than if I chose by number of works read by the same author. Which is more indicative? Or something else entirely? I’ve read most of Stephen King but wouldn’t class him as favourite author. Always classified LoTR as favourite book but not sure I’d pick Tolkien as favourite author either.
Possibly Janny Wurts as I’ve read all her books, but not necessarily rated them all highly.
Brandon Sanderson: read a range of his books and enjoyed them all. But not rushing to complete the Mistborn books.

Jane Huang | 8 comments There are so many, it changes with the latest book I'm reading, but these are some of my favourites:

Guy Gavriel Kay
Patrick Rothfuss
NK Jemisin
George RR Martin
Frank Herbert

Silvana (silvaubrey) I have lots of fave authors but only a few are autobuy/read authors:

China Mieville
Kameron Hurley
George RR Martin
Yoon Ha Lee

All are equally great with short and long forms, SF and F. I will read everything they write. Well, except the Wildcard stories (sorry, George).

message 14: by Gary (new)

Gary Gillen | 134 comments I looked at all of the series that I have read on my book lists and the most books I have read were:
All 10 of the Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny
All 10 of Mission Earth by Ron L. Hubbard
10 of the 16 Pern Novels by Anne McCaffery
9 of the 11 John Carter of Mars Books by Edgar Rice Burroughs
All 7 of the Foundation Novels by Issac Asimov.

Those are my all time favorites.
My current favorites that will end up on that list soon are:
George R. R. Martin
Brandon Sanderson
Joe Abercrombie
