In a continent on the edge of war, two witches hold its fate in their hands.

Young witches Safiya and Iseult have a habit of finding trouble. After clashing with a powerful Guildmaster and his ruthless Bloodwitch bodyguard, the friends are forced to flee their home.

Safi must avoid capture at all costs as she's a rare Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lies. Many would kill for her magic, so Safi must keep it hidden - lest she be used in the struggle between empires. And Iseult's true powers are hidden even from herself.

In a chance encounter at Court, Safi meets Prince Merik and makes him a reluctant ally. However, his help may not slow down the Bloodwitch now hot on the girls' heels. All Safi and Iseult want is their freedom, but danger lies ahead. With war coming, treaties breaking and a magical contagion sweeping the land, the friends will have to fight emperors and mercenaries alike. For some will stop at nothing to get their hands on a Truthwitch.

I don't know how I feel about Aeduan though, he's kind of an asshole. And I don't know if I trust Leopold. he definitely has some sort of ulterior motives to bring Safi back to Cartorra. I don't know why Vivia is resorting to piracy to deal with her enemies, but seems like a valid coping strategy lmao. I still don't understand why Vivia and Merik are fighting so much. They both obviously care about Nubrevna and want the best for it, yet their arguing over how to do it is making things worse. (hide spoiler)]

I can't determine what she is responsible for and what she isn't and WHY she has been working against Merik this whole time instead of finding a way to work with him since it seems like she does actually care about her people, sort of. I feel really bad that Merik is all scared and burned now. I'm pretty sure Safi will still like him and all, but I think it will take him a while to get over the changes himself. And Aeduan and Iseult just need to hook up already! (hide spoiler)]

I wish Merrick knew that Safi was still alive before he decided to trek out into the wilderness for a cure. How convenient that the Voicewitch said that Vaness was still alive, but not Safi. I think he will have to track down Iseult in the next book to cure him, so maybe word will get to him by then. (hide spoiler)]
