Edwin (edmandu) | 241 comments The results of the Winter 2018 book poll - Max Brand was a tie. Both Beyond the Outposts and Destry Rides Again are the American Westerns Groups Reads.

HornFan2 (hornfan2) | 100 comments That makes it more fun to have two classics from Max to read.

Edwin (edmandu) | 241 comments Agreed. I'm kind of disappointed then neither of these are in the Max Brand Megapack that I bought. I'm starting BEYOND THE OUTPOSTS first.

HornFan2 (hornfan2) | 100 comments Totally agree with you, especially since 15 books of the 20 in the Megapack are free on Project Gutenberg and they could have put a better selection together verse what they did. Lucky I already had Beyond the Outposts, had to purchase Destry Rides Again and probably will start with that one.

Edwin (edmandu) | 241 comments I bought the BEYOND THE OUTPOSTS ebook on Amazon then I found the audiobook on Hoopla, a digital service from my local library. I rarely listen to audiobooks cuz I always get distracted by picking up something to read, but in this case the narrator is so compelling that I may make an exception.

Still | 74 comments I might have asked this before but here I go again. I've acquired quite a few Max Brand titles over the past couple of years. My understanding is that a number of his books were censored upon reissue after his death. One Western fan insisted the censorship was because of a son-in-law who was in charge executing his estate and who objected to some of the coarse language Brand used in his novels as originally published in Western pulps.

Question: any truth to this?
Second Question: anyone know which editions were reissued untouched from their original publication?

Thanks!

Tim (timi2u) | 67 comments Reading time has been tough lately, but I remember reading something like this before & I have The Max Brand Companion by Jon Tuska that probably has something in it about this.
I’ll try to find time to see what I can dig up.
