Dwight | 58 comments It’s a Sic-FI novel I read back in the mid-80s to early 90s. It takes place in a futuristic world where two major corporations are in a literal war for dominance. The companies are like replacements for governments.
I’m the beginning of the book the soldiers, paid mercenaries, wear suits that allow them to “die” virtually but remain actually safe.

At one point two executives (one from each company) are meeting or having lunch or something. They are mugged and one of them is killed by the mugger. The surviving executive decides to use the tragedy to pretend that his company has decided to switch from virtual deaths to actual deaths, in order to scare the competition.

Dwight, what products and services do the two corporations provide? What type of business are they in?

A long shot - Inherit the Earth by Brian Stableford?

Dwight | 58 comments Thanks for taking the long shot 😄 unfortunately not it.

I don’t recall what they provide or sell. It seems like that wasn’t a big part of it. Or maybe I just forgot.

The Cold Cash War (1977) by Robert Lynn Asprin?

(https://www.worldcat.org/advancedsearch > Keywords: "corporations" war | Subject: science fiction | 1970-1997 ? | Not juvenile | Fiction | Book | English)

Dwight | 58 comments Yaaassss!!!

Thank you! I’ve been looking for this title for quite a while. And to see it’s by Asprin, one of my favorites from his Myth-Adventures series...even better.

Way to go, and thanks!

Great. Glad you found your book, Dwight. I find Worldcat.org is good resource for tracking down older books.
