I read Beware of Pity a few years ago and liked it very much.

Anniversaries: From a Year in the Life of Gesine Cresspahl
. It's probably my favorite NYRB Classics release of all time, though there are so many others that I'd hate to leave off the list.
I also loved Jean Amery's Charles Bovary, Country Doctor: A Portrait of a Simple Man .
