Louise | 491 comments With 2018 winding down, please share the best NYRB Classic that you have read this year.

It can be hard to choose. I read 8 NYRB Classics in 2018 and my favorite was The Prank: The Best of Young Chekhov

WndyJW | 391 comments This is easy for me, the only nyrb book I read in 2018 was The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne by Brian Moore . Last year I read 4 other nyrb books and Judith Hearne would still be my fave if I included those.

I read Beware of Pity a few years ago and liked it very much.

I just ordered Grand Hotel by Vicki Baum , it’s been on my wish list for awhile now.

WndyJW | 391 comments I brought A High Wind in Jamaica because Harriet Gilbert, host of the BBC Good Read and World Book Club, cited it as one of her top 10. I discovered that almost every book she chooses as her “good read” are books that l love so I wrote her a fan letter and she was kind enough to reply!

Louise | 491 comments You can make friends that way sometimes, reaching out to fellow readers. I vaguely recall reading A High Wind in Jamaica in high school (many years ago) but I don't remember much about it. I will have to give it a re-read.

message 6: by Lee (new)

Lee I’m still reading it, but Uwe Johnson’s ‘Anniversaries’ is wonderful.

Definitely I vote for Anniversaries: From a Year in the Life of Gesine Cresspahl . It's probably my favorite NYRB Classics release of all time, though there are so many others that I'd hate to leave off the list.

I also loved Jean Amery's Charles Bovary, Country Doctor: A Portrait of a Simple Man .

Kevin Adams (kadams22) | 20 comments I couldn’t agree more with Anniversaries. Unlike anything I’ve ever read. Berlin Alexanderplatz (sorry, I read it before it was selected) and All For Nothing are fantastic.

Dax | 17 comments Agree with Kevin about All For Nothing. Read it this year and really enjoyed it. Glory for Empire, Seventh Cross, Land Breakers and Warlock were also excellent, but I think I'd have to give the #1 slot to Arabia Felix.

message 10: by Lucille (new)

Lucille Arabia Felix is my #1 of 2018 also. I suggested it for my small book group; we'll read it in February. Dinner menu comes from our books; this one will be a challenge. Goat? Sitting on floor eating with fingers? This group of 7 has read about 7 NYRB Classics over the years and our favorites were A High Wind in Jamaica and The Book of Ebebezer Le Page, with The Long Ships following for fun and adventure.

WndyJW | 391 comments Because I tend to be lazy will everyone, pretty please, link the books they mention? I know that can’t be done on smart phones, but when possible linking the books makes it easy for everyone to look at the books mentioned.

Your book group has good taste. I really enjoyed all of those you mentioned.

I don’t think so , but this other Arabia Felix: The Danish Expedition of 1761-1767 is 🤷‍♀️

Arabia Felix The Danish Expedition of 1761-1767 by Thorkild Hansen

message 15: by Lucille (new)

Lucille The NYRB title is Arabia Felix The Danish Expedition of 1761 - 1767 by Thorkild Hansen, translated by Colin Thubron https://www.nyrb.com/products/arabia-...

message 16: by Lucille (new)

Lucille How do you get a title directly linked? I see many doing it. I tried but had to go with the online catalog link to the title?

Lucille I tried that and got the publication you asked about. I guess I will have to try the ISBN. Let's see. Arabia Felix The Danish Expedition of 1761-1767 by Thorkild Hansen

ISBN works but if you use the book title and it's not the edition you are looking for, right under "add" you can click on "other editions" and scroll through those. If you don't have the ISBN number.
