I'm taking this as meaning a Women's Prize for Fiction winner (ie a specific award) rather than a general category for women. Likewise the BAME - the Jhalek Prize etc. The Guardian reported this week that of the UK's 100 bestselling books of 2018, only 35 were by women, and 2 by BAME writers. So I reckon the categories are valid, in context. But each to their own, of course! ☺️

I completely agree, the diversity deficit in publishing is shameful. But, as outlined in the piece I linked to, there is disagreement regarding the best way to address this and I’m among those who remain unconvinced by the value of ‘women only’ or ‘people of colour only’ prizes.

But as you say, each to their own :)

Anetq | 86 comments Huh - I hate all the ManBooker winners I've ever read (as far as I can recall - too many white men feeling stuck, doing nothing and feeling sorry for themselves, because they can't pull themselves together - unfortunately makes me want to kill the main character...), however I usually enjoy the Nobel Prize Winners, so I will give this a go, but skip some categories (incl. YA, and I suspect Poetry - but let's see).
Note to self: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

Not sure about the categories yet...

Angela (bachini) | 7 comments I'd like to join, will post my list when I've had a chance to check some awards and see if any of then match up to my already massive TBR tower. I'm just about to finish This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor so can tick off either debut or biography already.

No, i'm not comfortable with that either so removed it from my list.

Also I won't fill in that bookshelf thing because I don't like it. But I AM doing the challenge, thanks Paul!

Jacqueline Blatchford (jacqueliner) | 38 comments Wonderful! I'm going to aim for six books. I'm still suffering from PTBPS (post-traumatic Booker prize syndrome) after reading The Luminaries several years ago. Still, I do need to read more widely, so challenge partially accepted!

Pat - I did as well, though yes, other experiences less enjoyable (given up in other words and now don't bother!)

Jason (jasondenness) | 1877 comments This is why I suggested the award winners, cos so many have been bad in the past in my opinion that it must be worth looking deeper as they must have got some right in the past.

And why I didn't have booker as a specific selection too.

Anetq | 86 comments Ahaha so glad I am not the only one hating the boring Booker winners :) Thank you all for that!
I've updated msg 28 today - have read these 7 Prize winners so far:
Fiction Prize Winner Ar by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir, Nordic Council Literature Prize 2018.
History The Quaker by Liam McIlvanney - The McIlvanney Prize 2018 (best Scottish Crime book of the year).
Debut Prize Winner Killing Floor by Lee Child - Barry Award for Best First Novel 1998.
Translated Fiction Winner The Great Passage 本屋大賞 for 1st place (2012) (No idea what the prize is, Japanese.)
Science Fiction Corpus Delicti. Ein Prozess by Juli Zeh. The Kitschies Nominee for Red Tentacle (Novel) (2012)
Any Longlisted Book: Khirbet Khizeh by S. Yizhar
BTBA Best Translated Book Award Nominee for Fiction Longlist (2009)
Travel Fiction or non Prize Winner Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction (2017) (Migration is a kind of travel!)

I really recommend the first one, it's been translated into English as Hotel Silence - if anyone is looking for a nordic prize winner (Icelandic). While I'm at it let me recommend the Finnish/Estonian winner from 2010 Purge by Sofi Oksanen

Pat Morris-jones | 1373 comments Actually just looked up on Wikipedia and have read about 20+ Booker prize winners. Liked about 15+. I didn’t know they were Bookers! So I’m wrong I guess. Strangely the winners by a particular author were not always my favourite by that author, in fact often my least favourite, even if I generally like that author eg Iris Murdoch.

I tend to find with Booker prize ones that they are either really good or dreadful. There are a lot of other prizes out there that are much better though.

You're right, Pat! I've just googled and had no idea that half of those were Booker winners/shortlisted when I read them. I haven't really fancied the winners in recent years; the last one I read was Sense of an Ending, although I really should take on the Hilary Mantels again (abandoned Wolf Hall as I couldn't focus on it due to very small children at the time).

I've read quite a few of the shortlisted – there have been some brilliant books over the years. For example, The Sisters Brothers, which I only read because of this group and would usually not be my genre at all, was FAB.

I've completed 18, list in Message 28 (incl. YA to my own surprise) - I'll add a Nobel Prize winner and quit while I'm ahead - I don't see the Natural History or poetry happening this year :)
