{Name;Nickname;Meaning}
♡ Yukino Kiera Cadwell
♡ Yuki, Yui, Yu, Snow, Snowfall
♡ Yukino means "to be like snow."
{Age;Gender;Sexuality}
15 years old
♡ Female
♡ Bisexual, Single
{Job;Wealth;Popularity}
♡ She's a student, but she tends to help out at the Library. Co-Owner of the Brand ThunderChords
♡ She's not particularly rich, just middle class. She has plenty of money saved up, but she doesn't really use any of it and stores it in a safe.
♡ She would never consider herself popular, but others seem to say otherwise. She just doesn't bother to talk to people. She's well known through out the school, but she's only known through the rumors. Even so, she's actually far more popular than most believe. Girls know her for the amount of people whom's asked her out and she flat out rejected them, both male and female, while the males tend to know her more mainly because of her 'cuteness'. Either way, majority of her fellow students often compare her to a 'doll.' They also know her and her brother for creating the brand "Thunderchords."
{Friends;Relationships;Family}
♡ It seems as though she has plenty of friends, but that's not the case. She doesn't really consider them friends, just people she has to talk to against her will. She tends to hang out with her twin brother quite a bit though.
♡ She's never really thought about relationships. Sure, she's been asked out a couple times in the pass, but she never really accepted any of them or seriously thought about love.
♡ She has a twin brother named Katsumi whom she hangs out with quite a bit, mainly because he's one of the few who she actually enjoy's company. She also has two younger sisters who were supposedly adopted. Other than that, nothing else is really known about her family. Many people say it's a creepy coincident how both set of siblings just happened to turn out to be twins though.
{Appearance}

Yukino is stands to be around 5'4" and weighs around 100 lbs, which is 15 pounds less than what she should be at for her height and age. She is flat chested, hence why many people refer to her as a child, despite the fact that she's nearly an adult. She has awfully smooth, pale porcelain skin and two doll like eyes. Her right eye is blue while the other is purple, so she often wears contacts in public. Her long silky hair is actually pure white. Her outfits only consists of the shades black and white. Most would compare her to a ghost, for her hair and her skin would clash and make her look abnormally pale. Despite this, she's still rather popular. If anything, it gives people more things to talk about.

{Personality}
Other than her unusual eyes and hair, most would think she was perfect. She was always smiling, no matter what. Of course, in this community, it was kind of expected of everyone to be like that. She smiled and acted kind, but she didn't really hang out much with the other students. She attends all her classes, but she's out of there before anyone could even walk up to her. She even smiles when she's around her siblings, except majority of the time her smile is genuine when she's with them. However, no one's perfect. Even a robot breaks down at some point. Yuki isn't exactly the most mentally stable person, and well, all this fake personalities isn't really helping with the mood. She often talks to herself and draws the weirdest things in her notebooks, like dragons and weapons. Of course, Yuki isn't one to buy this 'Utopia' crap and is often heard cursing under her breath whenever anything government related comes up. Yuki had read many things about the past, even some banned books, and she much preferred the old world. It didn't help that she was basically a walking target to be taken down at any time, with her bright hair and everything. She's an overall kind and caring person, but she can be quite sarcastic and very brutal when she has to be.
{History}
Yukino's parents, like everyone, was pressured to be something they were not, perfect. They were a picture perfect family. Rich, kind, always happy, loving, and caring. Or so it seemed. Behind the forced fake smiled hid terrible parents and very unstable children. Behind closed doors, their parents were cruel, abusive parents. They were always drinking whenever they could and was always drunk when they were home. They would abuse Yukino and Katsumi for not being 'perfect' and every time they supposedly 'messed up.' They were sorry excuses for parents. Of course, Yukino and Katsumi let it slide for the longest time because they knew no one was perfect and knew just as well how pressuring it was to act perfect all the time. That was, until their neighbor died of heart attack. The poor woman had been raising two children on her own for the past 3 years.
The two were only three years old, and well, Yukino and Katsumi were 10 at the time. Their parents adopted the small children. Yukino and Katsumi spent most their time playing with the children, keeping them safe from their parents abuse. Until, one day, while Katsumi and one of the twins were out shopping, their dad had gotten drunk again. He and their mother was fighting back and forth, and next thing Yukino knew, she and the little Akiko heard a loud thump. Yukino locked Akiko in the bathroom to keep her safe and told her to not open the door for anyone but her. So, she left and found her mother on the ground, dead.
Their father looked at her with this crazed look in his eyes, he had finally broke under all the pressure. He started laughing and charged at Yukino. Thankfully, because their mother had owned a gym where she taught martial arts, Yukino actually knew how to defend herself. She dodged her father's attack and punched him. Evade and attack. She quickly when to one of the drawers as he struggled to get up and grabbed a knife. He got up and tried to come closer to her, so she stabbed him. He dropped, but the damn man just wouldn't die. He got back up and she stabbed him again, this time where the heart should be. He fell, and after a few moments, his heart and breathing completely stopped. Katsumi came home to see Yukino covered in blood, backed up in a corner. In front of her was the corpse of their father.
When she heard the door open she quickly rushed over to Katsumi and hugged him. After getting cleaned up, she told Akiko it was okay to come out of the bathroom. Yukino took all of the money from their safe and account, and they all packed their belongings. She also took some stuff from their parents room, like expensive jewelry. They had a long way before they could get a job and needed as much money as they could get. So, they moved out the house and destroyed all the evidence.
They bought a new house, not a huge one like their previous one and they lived there. Yukino and Katsumi came up with some designs and eventually started a brand called Thunderchords. It eventually became very popular and a bunch of people started talking about the brand that two 12 year old children made and managed to make it popular. It's been 5 years since the incident involving their parents, and well, they continue to act perfect, for the sake of having a normal life. Well, as normal as it can get.

Mida is technically evil. For the purpose of this dystopian role-play it is her way or the highway.

Do you understand what I mean by weaknesses and strengths now?
For an example, someone might have the weakness of being indecisive. It can effect them in pressuring situations.
Someone who is obese might have the weakness of stamina. They wouldn’t work well in any scenarios where they need to do something for a long time.

Thistle E. Attaina - Part OneName: Thistle Eventide Attaina
Nicknames: Thissy, Thiss
Age: 25
Gender: F
Appearance: Thistle has stick straight, rich chocolate brown hair to her shoulder blades, but she usually keeps her thick locks up in a messy bun with a few, curly wispies around her face. For some reason, her baby hairs are slightly curly, unlike the rest of her hair, which can’t hold a curl even after a full can of hairspray. She has wide, emerald green eyes with tinges of brown around the edges of the irises. When light hits her eyes, they reflect what she is seeing crystal clear, making the irises look like glass marbles. She has a light, creamy complexion and several freckles on her cheekbones, which she adores. Anytime she puts on makeup, she purposely never covers them. Her face is faintly round with some sharp edges, like her high cheekbones and slender jaw. Her petite nose is rounded at the end with a generous splatter of more freckles, and her lips are thin but are naturally a rosy pink. Her ears are also small, and her forehead is slightly round but small as well. She has a few, faint wrinkles on her forehead from continuously frowning when she’s concentrating on something or working in a lab on some project or other, but she’s careful to conceal those if she has to wear something other than a lab coat. A couple more wrinkles are around her eyes as well, but again, she covers those up if the occasion calls for it. Her figure isn’t one to brag about. She does have a trim waste from keeping up with six plus projects every day running around the lab, but it’s the only thing she’s happy with about her body structure. She has almost no curves anywhere and a small chest. She does have an elegant, elongated neck and long limbs, but as a result, she tends to be kind of clumsy. She’s about 5’8 and weighs roughly 103 pounds; you can see her ribs through her skin if she wears a more transparent dress or shirt. Her nails are always kept short for practical reasons, and her hands are always dirty or stained with various chemicals or fertilizers as she is always forgetting to wear her gloves, though she does this a bit on purpose because she likes working with her bare hands better. Her hands are calloused from constant use in the labs and greenhouses, but the rest of her skin is smooth as silk. She has a few scars in various places (mostly on her hands) but doesn’t much mind them unless she’s not working. She also has a small tattoo of a pine tree on the inside of her right ankle.
The only thing Thistle wears most days is her lab coat, which is now horribly stained and falling to bits after several years of constant usage. However, she insists on wearing it and patches it up with scraps of fabric from her sewing basket, but many of the stains on it are permanent and will not come out no matter how many times she washes it, which doesn’t happen that much anyway. Her days are mostly spent in solitude as she refuses to have a lab assistant, so no one but her has to care about how she looks. And she chooses not to care. She’s usually alone, so why waste time washing something when you can get away without doing it? She hardly ever wears shoes and prefers to be barefoot whenever she can. If she absolutely has to wear shoes, she’ll wear her black combat boots, which are also starting to get worn out. If she has to dress up for something or at least wear normal clothes like every other human being, she prefers lacy blouses in pastel colors and jeans or maxi skirts, but she wears very minimal jewelry, though that only happens if she has to wear something especially dressy. Jewelry is just not practical for lab work, so she owns very little of it. She once had her ears pierced, but she never wore earrings, which caused the holes to eventually close up again. Her taste in makeup is very natural and light. She’ll cover her wrinkles and scars as best she can, and on rare occasions, she’ll add a little blush and lip gloss.
Personality: In a nutshell, Thistle is a mature, dedicated, focused, disciplined, caring workaholic. She is mature far beyond her years; she had to be due to the circumstances around her childhood. Her advice is almost always excellent, though she fails to follow her own good sense when it comes to her personal life. She loves helping other people out in any way she can, but she’s very selfless in that she doesn’t do nice things for the glory or recognition or reputation. She could care less what people think of her for helping someone else. She just wants to be a decent human being and make the world a little better of a place, even if at times it seems like nothing she does could ever have any kind of positive effect. She believes that miracles are all around us and come in all shapes and sizes. Even a simple, kind word of encouragement to someone could make an impact on their life, and she’s at her happiest when she’s just helped someone else feel better or solve a problem. For a while after that, her self-esteem is boosted up, and she seems genuinely confident and cheerful.
She’s very dedicated to most applications and fields of science. She feels that her purpose (secondary to caring for people and making a difference) is to obtain as much knowledge as possible for people in both the present and the future, though she feels that certain kinds of information are more valuable than others. She never did understand philosophy very well; it seems like a waste of time to her, but most fields that don’t have applications for or revolve around tangible things seem pointless to her anyway. She never gives up on things and tends to be a perfectionist, though sometimes this backfires as she doesn’t always know when to drop something. However, she isn’t this dedicated and focused on everything. There are only two things she doesn’t know how to quit: people’s problems and her scientific projects and pursuits.
Thistle can also be very nosy and sometimes doesn’t know when too far is too far. She only has people’s best interests in mind, but occasionally she makes things worse by sticking her nose where it isn’t welcome or wanted. She always instantly apologizes to someone if she has hurt their feelings or gone too far and then will mentally berate herself later in private for messing up. Her perfectionistic tendencies don’t allow for mistakes of any kind. She can be very patient with certain things, like her main two interests, but with other things she’s rather impatient and becomes quickly frustrated with herself, even over something that seems small to other people, like reading words in an unfamiliar font.
Thistle has a minor case of dyslexia. She is able to read, but it tires her after only a short time and gives her headaches. As mentioned above, even reading something in a new font is stressful and difficult for her, and she is a slow reader as she has to reread sentences multiple times to comprehend them. Her handwriting is sometimes illegible, and she mixes capital and lowercase letters up together when she is forced to write something down. She also abbreviates almost everything, which is why no one can read her notes, and often misspells things as she spells words phonetically. In the past, she has always denied promotions that require more administrative work, even if she would otherwise enjoy the position, but her frustration and stress over those tasks force her to turn those offers down. To most people, she’s an idiot for not taking a position with more prestige and opportunities, but she doesn’t care. She knows when she’s out of her depth.
She always loses track of time and can never judge how long a simple task will take to complete it. She is more comfortable multitasking than focusing on one particular thing, which is why she has so many different projects going on at the same time, and she learns best through experience and hands-on approaches. She has trouble with written and verbal instructions and can’t remember them to save her life. She has to do things herself or watch it being done to actually learn it.
She is highly intuitive and more so than most people. She’s an excellent judge of character and is good at telling when people are lying or being less than forthcoming with her. She tends to be very forgiving most of the time and has trouble holding a grudge unless the person she’s holding it against has hurt someone else. She can be a bit of a doormat sometimes and believes in third and even fourth chances for people, which usually just allows people to use her for their own purposes. But if it keeps someone from getting hurt or helps someone else, she’ll allow people to manipulate her, though many of her fears also play into this. She’s too afraid to stand up for herself, has a fear of public speaking, and would rather just take the easy way out and submit. However, she has little problem standing up for other people who need it. Her adrenaline kicks in and gives her the boost she needs to try to do something to help or diffuse the situation.
She’s extremely disorderly, even in the labs, and the other scientists often complain about her lack of organization. She knows where everything is and cannot function in a place that’s pristine and uncluttered. According to her, the clutter helps her think more clearly.
She gets lost easily and has no sense of direction. She even has trouble telling her left hand from her right hand, which is another reason she prefers not to have any good friends: she’s scared that people will make fun of her for her oddities. No one knows about her dyslexia except one person: her friend, Raven Xanta. He’s the only one whom she has any sort of real relationship with. She’s purposely distant acquaintances with everyone else.
She can never remember people’s names unless she can devise a trick in her head, but she never forgets a face. Ever.
Thistle may look confident on the outside, but most of it’s an act, especially when she’s in unfamiliar territory, like meeting someone for the first time or having to have help in the lab or having to have someone help her in her lab.
In summary, Thistle absolutely loves her job and discovering secrets of nature and science, and she cares for everyone. However, her many fears often cripple her, and she purposely isolates herself in order to protect her mind and heart.
Job: Lead scientist at Vanir Labs
Wealth: Fairly wealthy
Popularity: In the scientific community, she is regarded as brilliant by most, but outside that, no one has ever heard of her. She is acquaintances with many members of the scientific community, but there are very few people whom she would call friends.
Family:
Father: Thorne Attaina (biological)
Mother: Azura Attaina (biological)
Father: Matthias Larkwood (adoptive)
Mother: Alexandria Larkwood (adoptive)
Friends: Raven Xanta
History: Thistle has never known exactly who her parents were. She was found in a basket with no note or anything, and no one ever claimed her or reported her missing. The person who first found her was an elderly lady, but the widowed woman was too old to care for her. So, Thistle was put in the system and went through foster home after foster home. The first several years she has no memory of as she was only a baby, but she remembers perfectly all the families and houses starting when she was age six. She kind of liked the first home she remembered. Her foster parents were kind of distant, but they were well to do and had enough things to keep her occupied while they worked. As a small child left at home, she naturally had a paid nanny, but the woman her foster parents hired was more interested in watching soap operas than chasing after Thistle all day. With Thistle’s inquisitive mind and active hands, it’s a wonder she didn’t die or seriously injure herself under the care of her nanny.
Thistle E. Attaina - Part TwoHistory cont'd: She almost electrocuted herself a number of times for sticking her fingers in wall outlets for various reasons. Once the power went out temporarily, and she wanted to light herself up like a light bulb to see in the darkness. Another time it was dark again, but it was because she ran into the wall and tried to brace herself for the impact. Once she wanted to know how the outlets powered things like lamps and fans and microwaves, so she tried to take it apart. She was successful in getting the cover off, but luckily her nanny happened to catch her in the act and screwed it back on.
She stayed in this home for a full year, but it ended when she tried to take apart the microwave one day. She might have been able to put it back together if she’d had the time, but her nanny found her and put her in her room. When her foster parents came home, they said they couldn’t take care of her anymore. She’d destroyed too many of the appliances and gadgets in their home over the past year. So, Thistle was then sent to another family, but they would turn out to be worse than her aloof, former foster parents.
The family already had three other kids who were all older than Thistle. The main reason they’d applied to be foster parents was essentially to have a servant around the house whose presence also granted them with a moderate sum of money every month which the wife mostly spent on herself.
Thistle didn’t really mind it all that much. Busywork kept her out of trouble, and she had something to do with her hands to occupy herself. Plus, the parents were both gone most of the day, the husband at his job and the wife at a salon, and in the evenings the other children were out with their friends. So after school and early in the morning (no one in the family was a morning person), Thistle got free reign of the house. She liked to perform experiments in the kitchen or around the house, and as long as she cleaned up her messes before anyone noticed them, all was well. The worst that would happen to her for leaving a mess was just an earful from both foster parents.
She didn’t get along with the three other children very well. She had so many oddities and quirks that they teased and tormented her. It also didn’t help that she was the school loner and nerd. They played a number of practical jokes on her, spread false rumors about her, took advantage of her gullibility, and manipulated her for their own purposes.
When this pair of foster parents decided they couldn’t care for her anymore, they said it was because she set a fire in their microwave, which she did do on accident. She cut a bunch of grapes in half and placed them next to each other in the microwave and then turned it on. And voila! The appliance was set ablaze. It was an old microwave, however, and the family had actually gone out that day to shop for a new one. The real reason they didn’t want her anymore was because she was doing poorly in school and they felt like it reflected badly on them as parents.
When Thistle found out that they had given her up because she broke a microwave, she was close to furious and got into a physical fight with one of the kids from her now-former foster parents at school. She was suspended and took a month off of school to get settled in a new home before going back.
The next family she was with didn’t care for her for very long, five months at the longest. They had no children, but they did have several pet dogs who were particularly nasty to strangers. When Thistle hit one on the head with an empty beer bottle on the kitchen counter, she was immediately sent back.
Now hardly anyone would take her in. She went through a few more homes very quickly until she settled on her favorite one. Her new foster parents were scientists. Her foster dad was a biologist, and her foster mom was physicist, though those were only official titles. They were well-versed in a number of fields and did all kinds of research. Thistle was ten by this time, and for the first time, she genuinely liked her foster parents. They had no other children, and their only animal was a gentle Australian shepherd named Ranger. It took Thistle a while to get used to Ranger, but the two became pals after several months.
Since Thistle was still struggling in school, her foster parents, Matthias and Alexandria, decided to help her at home when they got off work. They found that she wasn’t slow or stupid. In fact, ‘gifted’ is the term Alexandria would later use that night during a private conversation with her husband. They found that she was capable of understanding maths and sciences that children her age could hardly comprehend at all. They then took her out of school and decided to homeschool her. It was tough, but Matthias cut down his hours at the lab to teach her. Alexandria helped when she could, as she was working basically for both herself and her husband, but she was often working late nights and was too tired to do anything but crash when she came home. Matthias and Alexandria’s library was all open for Thistle to use, and she spent many late nights in there, reading about histology or neurotransmitters or centripetal force. Her vocabulary increased rapidly as well, not just scientifically but academically. She could use words like superfluous, serendipitous, archaic, and vivacious in every day conversation. A colleague of Matthias and Alexandria’s once remarked that it was, “like talking to an adult” when he was over for dinner one night.
Matthias started taking Thistle to the lab with him when he’d thoroughly drilled her on lab procedure and etiquette. She liked getting to meet his coworkers and watch them work on a multitude of projects, and sometimes when no one else was around, Matthias would let her work alongside him.
This is easily Thistle’s favorite part of her childhood. She finally got to talk to people who had the same interests and the same desire to accumulate knowledge. Everything was run by rules, and she liked the structure. Talking with the other scientists at labs was the only time she got to hang out with people besides her current foster parents. She felt completely at home in the labs, and she could operate most of the equipment by the time she was eleven. Some of it was difficult as it required some finesse and coordination she lacked, but with practice and Matthias’s gentle instructions, she got the hang of it eventually.
One day, Matthias’s boss happened to visit him in the lab and saw Thistle using some of the equipment. Matthias tried to explain, but his superior ignored him and walked straight up to Thistle. “Little girl, what do you think you’re doing with that?” He asked, looking down at her. Thistle put her gloved finger to her lips and shushed him as she poured a clear liquid in a beaker into a conical flask until the solution turned pink. Then she took off her gloves, wiped her brow, and turned back to Matthias’s boss, who was standing there with his mouth agape. “I was just doing a volumetric analysis titration to identify this base, and I used phenolphthalein as the indicator. I still have to calculate the pH of the solution now and how much acid it took to neutralize the base. And then I have to calculate the pH and identify the acid of the solution on the other end of the table. For that one I used bromothymol as the indicator instead.” And with that, she went about her business and let the two adults in the room talk.
Later that week, Matthias’s boss called and asked him if he would allow Thistle to be accepted into their student program. The program was for high schoolers, but after talking earlier in the week with Matthias about her obvious gift for and knowledge of science and math, he decided to let her in when she turned thirteen the next week. Matthias immediately said yes, knowing Thistle would be thrilled. When he told his daughter (he’d come to love her as his own child) the news, she was ecstatic. All she talked about right up until her birthday was the student program and how great it was going to be. She couldn’t sleep or even focus on her studies, but Matthias didn’t mind much. She was far more accomplished than most kids her age.
When it was finally her birthday, she could hardly contain her excitement. She was finally going to have her first ever birthday party, and several of her friends in the lab were going to come. She’d made friends with several people there and almost all the interns. Plus, many of the scientists had their own children that attended the party as well. The party was a huge success, and Thistle fell into a sugar coma that night. She’d made a couple new friends closer to her own age, and she’d be starting the student program in only a few days.
However, she never did get to attend the program. Alexandria had been doing research on a virus in her lab, and a careless lab assistant accidentally exposed both of them to it. The assistant and Alexandria both died in a matter of days, but that wasn’t the only tragedy that struck. Matthias didn’t know she had contracted a virus when he rushed to the hospital with Thistle in tow. He came into contact with his wife and was quarantined with her. Alexandria and her team hadn’t been able to concoct an antidote yet, which is why they weren’t able to save her. The research they did have was used on Matthias. They prolonged his life some, but he died a few days after his wife.
Thistle lived at the hospital until her father (she’d come to think of him as her real father) died. All her parents’ colleagues paid her and her parents visits, and they made sure she had everything she needed. Some of the scientists and interns even took turns staying the night at the hospital with her so that she wouldn’t be alone. Thistle had to watch her foster parents die from a deadly virus, and she never truly came back from it.
The new family that she stayed with gave her some distance and allowed her to grieve in her own way. Every morning she would go to Matthias’s lab and do all the things he used to do. She cleaned everything, took inventory of the supplies, and looked over all his research and experiments. She would spend all day there alone. Every now and then one of the interns would check on her, but everyone mostly left her alone.
Eventually, she started to do some of Matthias’s experiments to see if she got the same results. Sometimes she did, and sometimes she didn’t. But over a week or so, she gradually started to continue her father’s work. She didn’t always understand everything, but she still had a key to Matthias and Alexandria’s home and could read up on whatever it was she needed to understand. Her eyes were always bloodshot during this time. At night, she’d sneak out to her old home and read the textbooks in the library or just wander through the house, reliving her favorite memories with her parents. Then she’d sneak back to her new room and get up with the sun to go to her father’s lab. She did this for over a month, but eventually her new foster parents decided that enough was enough. She wasn’t sleeping, hardly ate, and was rapidly losing weight. They cut her off from the lab and put her into therapy. Thistle attended the first few sessions, but when she found out that her new foster parents weren’t going to let her do the student program that she’d been invited to join, she quit going and went to the lab instead. It wasn’t long before her foster parents found out and started walking her to therapy to make sure she went. They eventually put her back into public school where she was miserable. She was bullied there but never told anyone. She didn’t trust anyone anymore after Matthias and Alexandria had died so suddenly. She didn’t find out until she was an adult that Matthias and Alexandria had actually started the process of adopting her before they passed away.
Thistle E. Attaina - Part ThreeHistory cont'd: Thistle did not do well in school. She was a constant distraction in classes and was sent to the principal’s office on multiple occasions. She often daydreamed in class or slept and didn’t pay any attention to the lectures. She hardly ever did her homework and skipped classes almost daily. However, her test scores in math and science were so high that the school didn’t really know what do with her. Clearly she was gifted just as Alexandria realized several years ago when she first moved in with them, but she was failing English and literature. She did okay in history as long as the topics were scientists or groundbreaking discoveries, but the school wouldn’t let her pass seventh grade if she didn’t save her failing grades. The principal was kind enough to offer Thistle extra credit opportunities, and her new foster parents made sure she did them. She hated it, but she didn’t want to be held back a year. She managed to pass seventh grade, but instead of finding her a program that would challenge her in her gifted areas, her foster parents enrolled her in the same school for eighth grade. Thistle barely passed this grade as well.
In seventh grade, she would often go to the lab during lunch or especially boring periods and work on her father’s research (she still thought of him as her father in her head). But eventually they needed the lab space, so someone else took over Matthias’s old lab. Thistle was beyond furious, and the next day she skipped all her classes. She went to her old home and screamed, sobbed, yelled, and eventually cried herself to sleep. She hasn’t cried over anything since.
When she woke up, it was close to dinner time, so she snuck back into her new room and didn’t move from her bed for several hours. For the next week, she isolated herself even more than usual. She was constantly irritable and frustrated, and it took almost nothing to make her lose her temper. When one of her usual bullies showed up for her daily torture session, she socked him in the jaw and walked away. She was expelled the next day.
Her foster parents homeschooled her for a few months but eventually decided they couldn’t handle her. She took nothing seriously and spent all her time reading science textbooks and performing experiments around the house. She caused a lot of damage with some of her more dangerous experiments, and the extra expenses became too much for the family. So, she was sent off to yet another family.
During her high school years, she went through about one family a semester. Her freshman year she went through two. She was failing her English class, and her often destructive experiments alarmed her foster parents since she had no lab to work in anymore.
It was a colleague of her parents who finally got through to Thistle. She had decided to blow off school again and pay the lab a visit. She hadn’t wanted to see any of her parents’ colleagues for a long time because it made the empty space in her heart ache horribly, but now they seemed to bring her a comfort that she couldn’t find anywhere else except inside a lab. It was nice to be around people who’d known her parents well and respected them. Outside the lab, people had forgotten about the top physicist and prize-winning biologist, but inside no one forgot. Everyone remembered them, and everyone acknowledged how pivotal they’d been and how groundbreaking some of their work had been. She could feel her parents around her in the labs, and she often went there just to talk to them when no one was around. But when she bumped into one of her favorite colleagues, he told her something important. He reasoned with her and showed her that in life there are going to be things she won’t like and that she’ll have to do them anyway. He reminded her of how well-rounded her parents were and the skills they had developed outside of science and math. She even learned that Alexandria had written many poems all through her career and that Matthias was actually a talented painter, though both of them had been so busy with their work that they had neglected their other talents.
After that, she went back to school as a changed student. It was difficult, and she had to play years of catch-up. But she started to do better in her classes, even the stupid ones. Her foster parents noticed a difference too, but she was still performing experiments in their house using their everyday supplies and appliances, which were always borrowed without permission and usually partly broken upon return. This was why she went through so many foster homes in her high school years. She could devise thousands of different experiments and studies using things found around the house. Her experiments tended to be crude as she lacked the proper supplies, but she spent every spare second she had on improving them. She even asked one of the interns at her parents’ old lab if she could use old supplies they were going to throw out. Knowing who she was, the intern said yes and dropped off several boxes of outdated or broken equipment at her current foster home.
She graduated high school with flying colors and immediately went to a prestigious college. She also got a part time job working in a lab (not her parents’ lab) and excelled in both places. She graduated from college in two years and completed her internship at her parents’ lab in one year. She worked in all kinds of fields: engineering, physics, biology, botany, and a few others. She earned her Master’s in biology and is currently working on her dissertation for her doctorate in advanced math. She now works in her parents’ lab, using the exact same lab that her father used to work in.
