Could it be "Way Home" by Elizabeth Hathorn / Libby Hathorn? or "Erik is Homeless" by Keith Elliot Greenberg?

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is Way Home by Elizabeth Hathorn. And I have now ordered a copy.
Thank you so much! Trivial though it is, that's brought me tears of joy.

A children's book consisting mostly of images with a little text.
I read it no later than 1996, and possibly as early as 1993, in my school's library in the UK.
Basic plot: a child (I'm quite sure it was a boy) makes his way across a bustling city at night - heading home. I remember yellow taxis so it is presumably set in New York. At the end, he reaches his destination, and it's some dank corner (I believe in a bus shelter). So it transpires that the child is homeless.
I can recall certain images from the book: queuing traffic, the city lights reflecting off the wet roads, steam rising from manholes, distant figures in raincoats, a hole in a chainlink fence that the child has to pass through to reach his abode, a mouse at some point (I believe at his destination).
I found this list of 100 children's books set in New York, but I have eliminated all of them:
