Stephanie,

The list you suggested is for dystopian and post-apocalyptic. I feel like there can be some overlap between the genres, but not always. Are we automatically including dystopian in post-apocalyptic, or is something we need to differentiate?

I did find something on wikipedia that says there is a fine line between the two, but the difference is almost negligible.

Yes, I think in nearly all the dystopias that I've read about there was some event that was apocalyptic in the past. So yes, I'll include all dystopian and PA type books.

I googled it and found that Mary Shelley's 1826 book The Last Man is often considered the first post-apocalyptic novel. So says wikipedia. :)

I started reading that one but gave up on it. Maybe I'll try it again. Have you read it?

I didn't know about it, so no, i haven't read it. I'm adding it to my TBR, though. I'm very intrigued by it and the idea of reading the first post-apocalyptic.

Go for it, and report back! Just remember that writing styles from 1826 are very different from today!

message 28: by Wanda (new)

Wanda (callie4) | 331 comments Anyone still looking for a post apocalyptic book? I just finished Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton. It is a different sort of post apocalyptic book told from the animals' side. The narrator is a crow, S.T., who was taught to speak and do a few tricks by Big Jim. When Big Jim gets "sick" ST takes Dennis the dog by the leash and sets off to look for a cure. It does get a little fantastical in a couple of places (other than talking animals), but I enjoyed it. There is some bad language.
