Patricia | 2283 comments 1.Britt-Marie Was Here
by Fredrik Backman (Goodreads Author), Henning Koch (Goodreads Author) (Translator)

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
Britt-Marie can’t stand mess. A disorganized cutlery drawer ranks high on her list of unforgivable sins. She is not one to judge others—no matter how ill-mannered, unkempt, or morally suspect they might be. It’s just that sometimes people interpret her helpful suggestions as criticisms, which is certainly not her intention. But hidden inside the socially awkward, fussy busybody is a woman who has more imagination, bigger dreams, and a warmer heart that anyone around her realizes.

MY SUMMARY:
“At a certain age almost all the questions a person asks him or herself are really just about one thing: how should you live your life?”

I love this author and loved this book. It was the perfect book to begin the new year. This is a self-discovery story about an older person and the fact that there is no time frame for this. I loved this town, the characters and Britt-Marie!

Patricia | 2283 comments 2. The Afterlife of Holly Chase
by Cynthia Hand (Goodreads Author)

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
On Christmas Eve five years ago, Holly was visited by three ghosts who showed her how selfish and spoiled she'd become. They tried to convince her to mend her ways. She didn't. And then she died. Now she's stuck working for the top-secret company Project Scrooge--as the latest Ghost of Christmas Past.

MY SUMMARY:
What a twist to a classic!

Patricia | 2283 comments 3. Long Time Coming
by Sandra Brown (Goodreads Author)

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
In more than fifty New York Times bestselling novels, Sandra Brown has captivated her millions of readers with stories of charismatic love and tantalizing twists of fate. In this classic tale, a woman is reunited with the man she has loved for years—and must reveal the secret that will jeopardize her chance for happiness at last.

MY SUMMARY:
I needed a change from what I was reading and picked this one up. I realize that this is not usually my genre. I don't usually read romance novels and perhaps my rating is more about the genre than the book. This one has an astronaut, a secret child, and a long lost love.

message 8: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 2283 comments 4. The Ocean at the End of the Lane
by Neil Gaiman (Goodreads Author)

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
Grca badge winner
Sussex, England. A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. Although the house he lived in is long gone, he is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock, and her mother and grandmother. He hasn't thought of Lettie in decades, and yet as he sits by the pond (a pond that she'd claimed was an ocean) behind the ramshackle old farmhouse, the unremembered past comes flooding back. And it is a past too strange, too frightening, too dangerous to have happened to anyone, let alone a small boy.

MY SUMMARY:
I kept going back to the reviews to make sure that I was reading the correct book. This was a very different story. I think if I went into the reading knowing that it had more of a Stephen King type vibe I would have enjoyed it more.

Patricia | 2283 comments 5. The Vegetarian
by Han Kang, Deborah Smith (Translator)

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
Before the nightmare, Yeong-hye and her husband lived an ordinary life. But when splintering, blood-soaked images start haunting her thoughts, Yeong-hye decides to purge her mind and renounce eating meat. In a country where societal mores are strictly obeyed, Yeong-hye's decision to embrace a more “plant-like” existence is a shocking act of subversion. And as her passive rebellion manifests in ever more extreme and frightening forms, scandal, abuse, and estrangement begin to send Yeong-hye spiraling deep into the spaces of her fantasy. In a complete metamorphosis of both mind and body, her now dangerous endeavor will take Yeong-hye—impossibly, ecstatically, tragically—far from her once-known self altogether.

MY SUMMARY:
Not sure about this book, it is a translation so some of the cultural differences may be confusing me. I was confused by the ending.

Patricia | 2283 comments 6.The Mistletoe Promise
by Richard Paul Evans

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
A love story for Christmas from the #1 bestselling author of The Christmas Box and The Walk.

Elise Dutton dreads the arrival of another holiday season. Three years earlier, her husband cheated on her with her best friend, resulting in a bitter divorce that left her alone, broken, and distrustful.

Then, one November day, a stranger approaches Elise in the mall food court. Though she recognizes the man from her building, Elise has never formally met him. Tired of spending the holidays alone, the man offers her a proposition. For the next eight weeks—until the evening of December 24—he suggests that they pretend to be a couple. He draws up a contract with four rules:

1. No deep, probing personal questions
2. No drama
3. No telling anyone the truth about the relationship
4. The contract is void on Christmas Day

MY SUMMARY:
I enjoyed this book. It is sweet, heartwarming and a good story about forgiveness. Some parts of this book made me cry. I did not know that it was a Hallmark movie.

Patricia | 2283 comments 7. Lethal White
(Cormoran Strike #4)
by Robert Galbraith (Pseudonym), J.K. Rowling

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
“I seen a kid killed…He strangled it, up by the horse.”

When Billy, a troubled young man, comes to private eye Cormoran Strike’s office to ask for his help investigating a crime he thinks he witnessed as a child, Strike is left deeply unsettled. While Billy is obviously mentally distressed, and cannot remember many concrete details, there is something sincere about him and his story. But before Strike can question him further, Billy bolts from his office in a panic.

MY SUMMARY:
I love this series and how J.K. Rowling is able to weave several stories into one. I love mysteries and love ones that also develops the characters outside the central mystery. Cormoran and Robin have a full life outside of their occupations, this mirrors real life. What's next for this couple?

Patricia | 2283 comments 8. Falling
by Jane Green (Goodreads Author)

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
When Emma Montague left the strict confines of upper-crust British life for New York, she felt sure it would make her happy. Away from her parents and expectations, she felt liberated, throwing herself into Manhattan life replete with a high-paying job, a gorgeous apartment, and a string of successful boyfriends. But the cutthroat world of finance and relentless pursuit of more began to take its toll. This wasn’t the life she wanted either.

MY SUMMARY;
I loved this book. I was thinking that I did not like romance books after several tries with other authors but I do like this author. There is romance but there is a nice story in which the characters are well developed. My mom is from Ireland and we too had sugar sandwiches when the cupboard was bare. We loved them, try them.

Patricia | 2283 comments 9. The Beach House
by Jane Green (Goodreads Author)

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
Nan Powell is a free-spirited, sixty-five-year-old widow who's not above skinny-dipping in her neighbors' pools when they're away and who dearly loves her Nantucket home. But when she discovers that the money she thought would last forever is dwindling, she realizes she must make drastic changes to save her beloved house. So Nan takes out an ad: Rooms to rent for the summer in a beautiful old Nantucket home with water views and direct access to the beach.

MY SUMMARY:
This was a great story that traces several different characters through some pretty dramatic life changes. The characters end up spending the summer in Nantucket at the beach house.

message 20: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 2283 comments 10. Summer Secrets
by Jane Green (Goodreads Author)

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
Jane Green delivers her second blockbuster novel of 2015, a story of one woman struggling to right the wrongs of her past, with even more complications in the present.

June 1998: At twenty-seven, Catherine Coombs, also known as Cat, is struggling. She lives in London, works as a journalist, and parties hard. Her lunchtimes consist of several glasses of wine at the bar downstairs in the office, her evenings much the same, swigging the free booze and eating the free food at a different launch or party every night.

MY SUMMARY:
This is a story about an alcoholic. It is not a pretty story as alcoholism is not. I appreciated that the author did not glorify it, make the recovery simple or the reasons that someone drinks as an excuse or rationale. It is also a love story, a story about family and parts of the story are set in Nantucket.

message 21: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 2283 comments 11. Big Little Lies
by Liane Moriarty (Goodreads Author)

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
Big Little Lies follows three women, each at a crossroads:

Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She’s funny and biting, passionate, she remembers everything and forgives no one. Her ex-husband and his yogi new wife have moved into her beloved beachside community, and their daughter is in the same kindergarten class as Madeline’s youngest (how is this possible?). And to top it all off, Madeline’s teenage daughter seems to be choosing Madeline’s ex-husband over her. (How. Is. This. Possible?).

MY SUMMARY:
I love this author! She is able to weave many stories of families into one central story. There is tragedy, humor, and romance. Three women bond over the start of their children's kindergarten year. Each of them is dealing with significant family issues.

message 22: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 2283 comments 12. Family Pictures
by Jane Green (Goodreads Author)

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
From the author of Another Piece of My Heart comes the gripping story of two women who live on opposite coasts but whose lives are connected in ways they never could have imagined. Both women are wives and mothers to children who are about to leave the nest for school. They're both in their forties and have husbands who travel more than either of them would like. They are both feeling an emptiness neither had expected. But when a shocking secret is exposed, their lives are blown apart. As dark truths from the past reveal themselves, will these two women be able to learn to forgive, for the sake of their children, if not for themselves?

MY SUMMARY:
When I began to read this book I have to admit I wanted to make sure this was the correct author. I nearly abandoned it but was then glad that I stuck to it. The story is about the transformation of two women joined by something neither of them anticipated. It is also about self-reliance and family.

Patricia | 2283 comments 13.Second Chance
by Jane Green (Goodreads Author)

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
Jane Green has become a nationally bestselling author with legions of fans through her novels about the true-life dilemmas of real women—their relationships, their careers, their loves, their triumphs and disappointments. In her latest book, Green tells the story of a group of people who haven’t seen each other since they were best friends at school. When one of them dies in a terrible tragedy, the reunited friends work through their grief together and find that each of their lives is impacted in ways they could have never foreseen. Warm, witty, and as wise as ever, this is a story of friendship, of family, and of life coming full circle.

MY REVIEW:
I enjoyed this book that starts with the death of a friend and follows a group of friends reunited. Perhaps one of the best things is that you see each character develop and although the endings are 'happy' they are not necessarily what you expect.

Patricia | 2283 comments 14. Can't Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds
by David Goggins (Goodreads Author)

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare — poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a U.S. Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events, inspiring Outside magazine to name him “The Fittest (Real) Man in America.”

In Can't Hurt Me, he shares his astonishing life story and reveals that most of us tap into only 40% of our capabilities. Goggins calls this The 40% Rule, and his story illuminates a path that anyone can follow to push past pain, demolish fear, and reach their full potential.

MY SUMMARY
One of my favorite life quotes is from Calvin Coolidge " Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” David Goggins lives this quote. Although what he persisted in is far from my experience I can appreciate his passion. I listened to the audio version and really enjoyed the discussion between the chapters where David further clarifies and relates the chapter to others. This is a book that I would love to give to some of my students to assist them in learning that it is not your circumstances that define you but what you do in those circumstances.

Patricia | 2283 comments 15.Dune Road
by Jane Green (Goodreads Author)

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
Her latest gem, Dune Road, is set in tony Highfield, Connecticut, where recent divorcee Kit Hargrove has joyfully exchanged the requisite diamond studs and Persian rugs of a Wall Street Widow for a clapboard Cape with sea-green shutters and sprawling impatiens. Her kids are content, her ex-cooperative, and each morning she wakes up to her dream job: assisting the blockbuster novelist Robert McClore. Then an unexpected series of events forces Kit to realize that her blissfully constructed idyll and blossoming new romance aren't as perfect as she thought.

MY SUMMARY:
I am making my way through Jane Green's books (library) and one thing that I wonder is does she have a personal connection to addiction as in the books that I have read there is always one person with an addiction. In this story there is an abusive relationship as part of the story. Some of the resolutions to the several story lines seemed too pat. What happened to all the villains?

Patricia | 2283 comments 16. To Have and to Hold
by Jane Green (Goodreads Author)

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
Alice knows she should be happy. A charming twenty-eight-year-old with a successful catering business, she’s always dreamed of a rose-covered cottage in the English countryside, filled with children and animals and home-cooked meals. Her favorite attire is comfy jeans, her best manicure features garden dirt under the nails. But when her teenage crush—the wealthy, dashing man-about-town Joe Chambers—wants to make her his bride, Alice is more than willing to play Cinderella to Joe’s prince. Never mind that he wants her to change—a diet, ice-blond highlights, stilettos, snooty gallery openings—and that he’s allergic to nature and kids. She tells herself she’s happy to sacrifice for love, and besides, with Joe’s stunning good looks and high-profile career at a top financial firm, every woman in London wants to be in her shoes.

MY SUMMARY:
Two people who are not suited for each other marry and the story unfolds in England and America.

Patricia | 2283 comments 17. Promises to Keep
by Jane Green

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
Callie Perry lights up every room she enters, and adores her settled family life in tony Bedford, New York. Steffi is Callie's younger sister. At thirty, she's still a free spirit bouncing between jobs and boyfriends in Manhattan. Their long-divorced parents, Walter and Honor, share little besides their grown daughters. But when Callie receives a difficult diagnosis, the family will come together for one unforgettable and ultimately life-changing year.

MY SUMMARY:
This is a story about love, between family members, between couples and with life. I found the beginning of the book a little confusing as each person's story is given and then each chapter ends with a recipe. However, I love how at the end you find out where the characters are after some time.

Patricia | 2283 comments 18. Mean Streak
by Sandra Brown

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
Dr. Emory Charbonneau, a pediatrician and marathon runner, disappears on a mountain road in North Carolina. By the time her husband Jeff, miffed over a recent argument, reports her missing, the trail has grown cold. Literally. Fog and ice encapsulate the mountainous wilderness and paralyze the search for her.

While police suspect Jeff of "instant divorce," Emory, suffering from an unexplained head injury, regains consciousness and finds herself the captive of a man whose violent past is so dark that he won't even tell her his name. She's determined to escape him, and willing to take any risks necessary to survive.

MY SUMMARY:

by Jennifer Close (Goodreads Author)

GOODREADS SUMMARY:

MY SUMMARY:

Patricia | 2283 comments 20. Tempting Fate
by Jane Green

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
Gabby and Elliott have been happily married for eighteen years. They have two teenaged daughters. They have built a life together. Forty-three-year-old Gabby is the last person to have an affair. She can't relate to the way her friends desperately try to cling to the beauty and allure of their younger years…And yet, she too knows her youth is quickly slipping away. She could never imagine how good it would feel to have a handsome younger man show interest in her--until the night it happens.

MY SUMMARY:
Sometimes it is hard to write a review because you are so mad about what happens to the characters. So many of the characters in this story were great including the husband, Elliott. The main character Gabby however not so much.

Patricia | 2283 comments 21.The Compassionate Achiever: How Helping Others Fuels Success
by Christopher L. Kukk

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
A powerful, practical guide for cultivating compassion—the scientifically proven foundation for personal achievement and success at work, at home, and in the community.

For decades, we’ve been told the key to prosperity is to look out for number one. But recent science shows that to achieve durable success, we need to be more than just achievers; we need to be compassionate achievers.

MY SUMMARY:
The concept of being compassionate and in your thoughts of others all achieve is beautiful. Christopher L. Kukk gives both personal as well as international examples both present and in the past to illustrate this concept. This is a book that gives some practical examples of how you can increase your abilities to be more compassionate. I know that I looked up some of his examples.

A new development has come to light in a story that began 40 years ago. It could be the BIG story of Dawson's career one in which he has a vested interest.

MY SUMMARY:

Patricia | 2283 comments 23. Void Moon
(Harry Bosch Universe #12)
by Michael Connelly

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly writes novels of brilliantly original suspense. In this electrifying tour de force, he takes us into a world of extremes: too much criminality, too much money, and too many ways to die.
In L.A. Cassie Black is another beautiful woman in a Porsche: except Cassie just did six years in prison and still has "outlaw juice" flowing in her veins. Now Cassie is returning to her old profession, taking down a money man in Vegas. But the perfect heist goes very wrong, and suddenly Cassie is on the run--with a near-psychotic Vegas "fixer" killing everyone who knew about the job. Between Cassie and the man hunting her are a few last secrets: like who really set up the job, why Cassie had to take the change, and how, in the end, it might all be a matter of the moon...

MY SUMMARY:
Michael Connelly writes books that are so layered in great storytelling that they are a pleasure to read. There were so much in this story that surprised me that it was exciting to read.

Patricia | 2283 comments 24.Harvesting the Heart
by Jodi Picoult (Goodreads Author)

GOODREADS SUMMARY
From the #1 New York Times Bestselling author of Leaving Time Paige has only a few vivid memories of her mother, who abandoned her at five years old. Now, having left her father behind in Chicago for dreams of art school and marriage to an ambitious young doctor, she finds herself with a child of her own. But her mother's absence and shameful memories of her past force her to doubt whether she could ever be capable of bringing joy and meaning into the life of her child, gifts her own mother never gave.

MY SUMMARY:
Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite authors. She writes with such passion that it has you feeling the character's pain. This is a hard book as the hurt of one of the characters is so deep.

by Mark Manson (Goodreads Author)

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger cuts through the crap to show us how to stop trying to be "positive" all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people.

MY SUMMARY:
I was looking forward to reading this book however it was not to my taste. I recognized that it would be written irreverently as that is boldly declared in the title. It was more the depth of discussion that I did not find enlightening. It reminded me a little bit about the children's story " Joesph had an Overcoat" in which when Joseph had nothing left so he wrote a story about it. The author states he had lost his job and his girlfriend so he wrote a blog about it. That then led to this book. I guess this can be one thing that I don't need to care about.

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
In this enchanting sequel to the number one bestseller The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Mitch Albom tells the story of Eddie’s heavenly reunion with Annie—the little girl he saved on earth—in an unforgettable novel of how our lives and losses intersect.

Fifteen years ago, in Mitch Albom’s beloved novel, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, the world fell in love with Eddie, a grizzled war veteran- turned-amusement park mechanic who died saving the life of a young girl named Annie. Eddie’s journey to heaven-taught him that every life matters. Now, in this magical sequel, Mitch Albom reveals Annie’s story.

MY SUMMARY:
Love, love, love Mitch Albom's writing and this story. This is such a warm-hearted sequel that follows The Five People You Meet in Heaven. I love a book that reminds us about life and what is important. One does not have to read " The Five People You Meet in Heaven" but you will want to so you have another Mitch Albom's story to read.

Now, 18 years later, Bellamy has written a novel based on Susan's murder. It's her first book, and it's an instant sensation. But because the novel is based on the most traumatic event of her life, she's published it under a pseudonym to protect herself and her family.

MY SUMMARY:
Sandra Brown writes gripping novels of suspense and romance. What a surprise ending for me. The twists and turns have you guessing throughout the story just to get a surprise in every chapter.

by Lauren Blakely (Goodreads Author), Zachary Webber (Narrator), Andi Arndt (Goodreads Author) (Narrator)

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
Kristen Leonard is done with setups. She’s not interested in your son or your nephew or your butcher or the guy who mows your lawn, thank you very much, grandma! After all, she’s a modern woman—she’ll take her chances on the algorithms of online dating to find her ideal man. Before long, she meets a man who might just be the one—he’s hilarious, quick-witted, and full of heart. And when she meets up with Cameron in real life, he certainly looks exactly like his profile picture…but something’s not quite right.

MY SUMMARY:
This was a good book for what it was a short simple romance book that I had as a free selection on Audible. I liked the family connection with the grandmother and mother part of the set-up.

by Michelle Obama (Goodreads Author)

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America—the first African-American to serve in that role—she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments.

MY SUMMARY:

Review I was really inspired by this book. Mrs. Michelle Obama opened the doors wide open as to who she is as a person. Her life is so relatable and yet so inspirational.

“For me, becoming isn’t about arriving somewhere or achieving a certain aim. I see it instead as forward motion, a means of evolving, a way to reach continuously toward a better self. The journey doesn’t end.”
― Michelle Obama, Becoming

I loved this book!
