MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments Happy New Year! It's 2019 and we're going to get this started with a slow and easy slide into the year.

So, with that said: Anthologies!

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments My nomination: To Shape the Dark To Shape the Dark by Athena Andreadis

Blurb: Science-based wonder is the core of science fiction. Yet the genre mostly cast science as either triumph or hubris. In To Shape the Dark, editor Athena Andreadis offers readers women heroes who are doing science not-as-usual. Scientists are astrogators who never sleep; and To Shape the Dark is part of that vigil.

Leo McBride (leomcbride) | 27 comments My nomination: Tales of Wonder Tales of Wonder

Blurb: Science Fantasy is the collision of science fiction and fantasy - where the impossible and the improbable come together. This is a universe of spaceships and sorcery, of mechanics and magic, where zeppelins soar through the ether and conjurers stalk dark tunnels with a ball of light in their fist. So cut loose, let slip the mooring ropes on your imagination, and join these nine authors as they set course for the horizon - and beyond.

Nine tales of science. Nine tales of fantasy. Nine tales to make you wonder.

Disclaimer: I have a story in there :)

Nyssa | 2023 comments I would like to nominate the previous anthology to Mrs.J's nomination:
The Other Half of the Sky by Athena Andreadis The Other Half of the Sky.

Blurb: Women may hold up more than half the sky on earth, but it has been different in heaven: science fiction still is very much a preserve of male protagonists, mostly performing by-the-numbers quests.

In The Other Half of the Sky, editor Athena Andreadis offers readers heroes who happen to be women, doing whatever they would do in universes where they’re fully human: starship captains, planet rulers, explorers, scientists, artists, engineers, craftspeople, pirates, rogues...

Have to say, this was a pretty decent read. I found Aliette de Bodard there. Swoon. Also found Martha Wells' Raksura series, too.

Michelle (fireweaver) | 33 comments how about:

The New Voices of Fantasy by Peter S. Beagle The New Voices of Fantasy

Blurb: What would you do if a tornado wanted you to be its Valentine? Or if a haunted spacesuit banged on your door? When is the ideal time to turn into a tiger? Would you post a supernatural portal on Craigslist?

In these nineteen stories, the enfants terribles of fantasy have arrived. The New Voices of Fantasy captures some of the fastest-rising talents of the last five years, including Sofia Samatar, Maria Dahvana Headley, Max Gladstone, Alyssa Wong, Usman T. Malik, Brooke Bolander, E. Lily Yu, Ben Loory, Ursula Vernon, and more. Their tales were hand-picked by the legendary Peter S. Beagle (The Last Unicorn) and genre expert Jacob Weisman (The Treasury of the Fantastic).

So go ahead and join the Communist revolution of the honeybees. The new kids got your back.

Justin (justinswapp) | 1 comments The Crimson Pact:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

The moment of the demons’ defeat became their greatest victory.

In the carnage after the last great battle against the demons, a doomed general discovers their hidden victory. Instead of being annihilated, unspeakable evil escaped into many unsuspecting worlds. To fight them, the men and women of the Crimson Pact must sacrifice everything—including their own lives.

In volume one, explore 26 stories (over 500 pages in print!) based on the worlds of The Crimson Pact about the valiant men and women who refuse to let the demons win, and those unfortunate souls caught in the epic struggle raging across the multiverse. New York Times Bestselling author and Campbell award nominee, Larry Correia and many urban fantasy, steampunk, sci-fi, horror, and fantasy writers tell the tales in this diverse collection of short stories, flash fiction, and novellas.

Nyssa | 2023 comments The winner, Glimpses: 16 Short Fantasy Stories, is currently Free for the Kindle on Amazon.

I will most likely start it tomorrow as my Spring classes began today.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments Winner Announcement:

While Glimpses: 16 Short Fantasy Stories did win this poll, Moderators here at Flights of Fantasy were disappointed to discover that several authors with stories in the winning book joined this group with the sole purpose of voting.

We will allow this book to proceed - only because we didn't explicitly request that members NOT STUFF THE BALLOT.

Of course, this means that all voting going forward will be heavily scrutinized and a lot more rules will be following shortly.

Disappointingly signed,
Flights of Fantasy Moderators
