Like I said, Americans don’t know history. Or geography. That’s why we’re number 1. We can’t count to 2.

Or spelling, apparently. I got confused by that whole thing about “favourite with a u” because... that’s just how you spell favourite??? In the nations of the commonwealth at least, where we speak the Queen’s English.

Shad (splante) | 357 comments The discussion at the beginning of the episode on John Scalzi made me think of how in The Consuming Fire he had a character refer to him as a hack.

Meh, that was just inbred British royalty trying to be like the French. Why putting a random U after the occasional O without rhyme or reason became a thing that stuck for you lot is a mystery.

True fact: the American accent is the original British accent. Nearly all British accents are younger than the US. That’s why Canadians and Americans sound similar, as do Australians and Southerners.

I'm not saying I've run across this often, but the few times I have. Ausies seem to be much more relax about others making the mistake. Where Kiwis can sometimes get a bit more bent out of shape if you do the opposite. Then again folks from both countries are generally pretty chill compared to us westerners .... until you start talking sports.

At least Veronica has read every Sword :-)

Only those 2 pesky Lasers she hasn't read. I can understand Lemming Lem, but A Fire Upon the Deep was my favourite book we read in 2016

Yeah Aussies find it amusing to get mistaken for a Kiwi. But Kiwis get a bit fiery when you call them Aussies.

I've also noticed that Canadian tourists get stroppy if you call them Americans ;-)

I thinks it's a big sibling/little sibling thing. The little one wants an identity separate from the bigger one,

Nice. Re. the second article, I've always read Shakespeare (in my head) in a Lancashire/Yorkshire accent. Maybe not perfectly accurate, but it sounded right to me, especially since plenty of folk I grew up around used thee and thou (or variations on the same) in normal conversation.

Oh, just found this on Lancashire accents as an example. I definitely still emphasise my 'r' s.

Also, this has all probably been posted before - sorry, I always find it interesting. Also also, since Veronica made the Canadian "aboot" joke, this one always puzzled me, as the mimicry always sounds more Scottish than Canadian to my ears.

message 29: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) | 2702 comments It’s kind of funny - every time Tom or Veronica talks about Dar, my attention is grabbed because it’s the actual first syllable of my name so I anticipate them talking about something I posted, hahaha.

Great episode, per usual. 2018 did feel like a fable year with Ka, Circe, A Wrinkle in Time, and Lovecraft Country falling under the umbrella.

Shhhhhhhhhhhh, if you give Veronica pronunciation clues she might stop saying "Dera Dara" and that would make me sad.

message 32: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) | 2702 comments Ruth - I would honestly be disappointed if I weren’t Dera/Dara anymore.

Trike - I got that so much after Dora the Explorer came out. My partner’s niece called me Dora til she was about 3.

Jessica (j-boo) | 323 comments Just finished listening. As for Kits never dying while Dar died multiple times, I think she explained it as due to the fact that she was less reckless than he was. If you recall, Dar never died of old age, rather he was killed each time (arrow, hurricane, etc). Presumably if it weren't for these accidents and misadventures, he would have just kept on living like Kits did, rather than dying and being reborn.

'The Patsy' beer is brewed in Costa Mesa California, only a few miles down the freeway from where the Orange County S&L group meet. Sounds to me like....... Road Trip !

Dominik (gristlemcnerd) | 134 comments I know I'm incredibly late to the party, but the whole "audiobooks of public domain works" thing already exists. It's called Librivox, is completely powered by volunteer readers and, while the quality is of course mixed, it's a nice source of some free audiobooks :D
