Hi everyone,

I borrowed the above title for this topic from another group. It would be nice to hear you chime in about ideas and suggestions. I formed this group because reading and discussing is an effective and pleasant way to to learn about Sentientism or any subject, by sharing ideas, and hopefully grow and nurture the activism and the movement.

How would everyone feel about submitting ideas for books, then taking a poll to select a "book of the month?"

If you are interested in this kind of read along, please share. Thanks.

cheers!

I am still in the middle of reading Animal Liberation this month, and would like to know if you are reading or have read this month's book. If anybody has already read it and wishes to start a discussion about it, either with a caveat of spoiler-alert (if that's even possible in this case), or just to start the conversation around the many components of issues in the book, please do.

In addition to a monthly poll about what the next month's book and topic will be, I think it would be good to have a monthly discussion about the corresponding book. Please feel free to offer more ideas, start discussions, etc.

Tui Allen (tuibird) | 20 comments There is a non-fiction book called The Ocean Is Alive: Re-visioning Our Relationship with the Living OceanThe Ocean is alive by Glenn Edney which proposes that the ocean itself is a sentient being, but along the way he makes a pretty good case for the sentience of several marine animals.
Here's the cover:
The Ocean Is Alive Re-visioning Our Relationship With The Living Ocean by Glenn Edney

Tui Allen (tuibird) | 20 comments And here's another idea. The Soul of an Octopus. Very interesting non-fiction concerning the sentience of octopuses. It has captivity however, which may meet with understandable disapproval. I know the place for an octopus is in the sea. However, this book is still well worth reading.

Thanks for those suggestions, Tui. I was lucky enough to interview Glenn Edney a while ago: https://youtu.be/9GAvks4BKJA (also on the Sentientism podcast). Great to have you here by the way!

Thanks for both those titles! I've added both your title suggestions to the group bookshelf. Anyone, by the way, can add books they deem related to sentientism.

If there's a book that you are reading and would like to discuss, feel free to start a discussion under Book of the Month --- it could be at any time, and could go on longer than a month! There have been a couple of book discussions recently :)

Tui Allen (tuibird) | 20 comments You interviewed Glenn Edney. I'm impressed and grateful. his book deserves attention. I've reviewed it. Despite being a fellow Kiwi, I've never met Glenn but have communicated with him as his diving experience and knowledge of the ocean has been very helpful to me in my own writing. He's helped me willingly and generously. I am now watching the youtube video of your interview! Didn't even know about it until I found this page. Thank-you!

Tui Allen (tuibird) | 20 comments Thank you for adding those two books to the bookshelf. I am sure they'll be valuable additions.
I've already downloaded my first book discovered on your bookshelf. It is the one called "What a Fish Knows" by Jonathan Balcombe. I have begun reading it.

Tui, feel free to start a new discussion about the book you are reading: What a Fish Knows: The Inner Lives of Our Underwater Cousins What a Fish Knows The Inner Lives of Our Underwater Cousins by Jonathan Balcombe Feel free to comment in the other book discussions there, too!

I recently read The Meat Racket by Christopher Leonard and I found it enthralling. I'm looking for my next sentientism read :)
