Refugee by Alan Gratz is a realistic fiction novel taken place in the mid 1940’s. The characters are in the time period when the Holocaust has began. Each character, Mohamed, Josef, and Isabel has to escape their own homes because they are being invaded or their house got blown up. Mohamed’s town got bombed so he had to evacuate immediately, Josef had to leave his home country because his father would get arrested if he didn’t, and Isabel and her family try escaping on a boat. Alan Gratz does a good job with keeping you engaged because after everything goes well something bad happens and you are always left on a cliffhanger. Also when you are getting bored of one person’s story you get put in another character’s point of view and you are never left bored. The story ends in a very sad way which I do not want to spoil so read it for yourself if you want to know. The whole idea of the story is really sad but the author makes it fun and exciting but also has sad moments when you feel emotional so it has a perfect balance of that. If you are looking for a action packed sad but yet still exciting book to read then Refugee is perfect for you. The theme of the story also relates to real world problems so everyone can relate to it. Everything that happens in the story does happen in real life so it’s not made up. Overall Refugee is an amazing emotional book.
