Annie | 37 comments Hi my nieces teacher gave this book as a reading assignment. Some parents are upset and saying it’s too much of an adult book. I have never read it, my sister has never read it and most of the parents upset have probably never read it. I figure maybe some of you book lovers have read this book? If you have, is it really that graphic and is it too much for a 9th grader?

Rachel | 7 comments It’s been years since I’ve read it, but I don’t remember it being sexually graphic. (What I’m sure most of the parents are concerned about.) She mostly describes her abduction and how she kept herself going while she was being held captive. The birth of her daughters and how she taught them with what little formal education she had at the time. It’s really uplifting and positive in some parts.

I think it’s an excellent cautionary tale. Not that she or her parents did anything wrong, but it shows how it only takes a split second and you can end up in a situation that you can’t control.

I think it’s a decent book for 9th graders. I mean, we’re talking 15/16 year olds. Chances are they’ve read more graphic fanfics.

Shannon (musingsofacat) I agree with Rachel.
Personally, I have a nearly 12 year old and a 1 year old and I'd let either of them read it. That being said my philosophy is 'read whatever you want, ask me anything you want about it, and be aware that some people in books that are portrayed as good behave in ways that aren't actually acceptable'. I grew up reading everything I could get my hands on and my parents banning particular books didn't change anything besides my not being part of the Harry Potter hype lol.
