Our Approach for the UNO Challenge:

1) We'll try to get all the tougher cards, i.e. color cards, draw 4 wilds, and reverses, claimed first. Those will be assigned to hands immediately by the captains on the FebHands tab planning sheet.

2) Other than your tough claimed cards, read what you want. If you are ok with using the planning sheet, go ahead and enter the next book or 2 you will read on the FebUNOBooks tag, filling in author, series, characters, and location - you only need to enter info that can be used for cards. Put an "x" in columns J-Y where appropriate - you may discover more characters as you read.

3) It would be helpful if you would enter "CR" (for Currently Reading) in column E when you start a book. When you're done, update column E with the date you finished reading.

4) If you aren't able to easily update the planning sheet, just post your upcoming books and the cards you think they'll work for to the team thread.

For everyone, when you're done, please post your completed book to the TEAM thread (we're not going to do a separate thread for this.) If you've entered all the info on the planning sheet already, this post can just be:

COMPLETION POST
book:
date read:
rating:
(If your book isn't on the planning sheet, please also list the cards and how book fits each card, like:)
4 - character Florian
Skip - location Peru

6) About mid-month, we'll do an audit of how we're doing on the filling out the hand. This is also about when each month's mini challenge hits.

7) We may swap books around as the month goes on, but as we near the end, we'll need to rally together to get any gaps filled.

Annalisa | 1743 comments Hi Team Jane Rizzoli,

I'm really looking forward to getting to know everyone on the team.

This is my third year participating in Uno. This is one of my favorite team challenges. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Is there anyone on the team who hasn't played before?

I read a lot of different genres, but I read the most fantasy and historical romance. Here are a few of my favorite recent reads. 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami , Hunted by Meagan Spooner , The Poppy War (The Poppy War, #1) by R.F. Kuang , Love in the Afternoon (The Hathaways, #5) by Lisa Kleypas , The Ones Who Got Away (The Ones Who Got Away, #1) by Roni Loren

Jennifer | 92 comments Hey! This will be my second year playing! I mostly read science fiction, fantasy, and mystery. I read about a book per week but usually during challenges like this I read a bit more!

message 11: by LaurLa (last edited Jan 14, 2019 04:13AM) (new)

LaurLa | 1075 comments HI there - this is my 3rd year playing. I really like this challenge and look forward to the start! Where is everyone from? I am in Indiana.

I read romance almost exclusively - but just about any genre within that. One of my favorites is Romantic Suspense, so sometimes that veers into the crime/thriller category. But I still really want my romance in it ;-) I actively avoid horror and YA unless it can't be helped (ie, I have to have it for a challenge). I have made it a goal this year to read a few classics/literary classics and have kind of focused that on some of Agatha Christie's old classics. But I added in Treasure Island for a real classic this year!

I recognize some names on our team but look forward to getting to know you all also!

Teddie (teddieg) | 1115 comments Hi Team! This is my third year playing as well. I like this challenge because it is mostly laid back, but teams need to work together for the color / number combos :)

I read a little bit of everything, but am drawn more to mystery, fantasy and sci fi (Jennifer, you and I will probably have a bunch of reverse card options!) I get a little impatient with most YA these days, but have read some wonderful exceptions.

Annalisa and I will be posting some more info in the first few posts soon!

Sharon (sharon_alexandr) | 346 comments Hi everyone! Looking forward to reading with and getting to know each of you.

This is my second UNO challenge. I participated for the first time and totally caught the team challenge bug. It has increased my reading so much and opened me up to several new authors and genres. I typically read a little bit of everything, but am drawn more toward mystery/thriller, literary fiction, historical fiction, and contemporary romance. I'm also a sucker for a juicy celebrity memoir!

Go Team Rizzoli!

HEADS UP SQUAD!

Would you all start looking for possible color book and reverse options we'll need this month? You can see what color and how many reverse cards are needed in this post.

Annalisa and I are finishing up the planning sheet, and will have that ready for you soon, but in the meantime, we're looking for everyone to find at least 1 or 2 books that will work for the colors and reverses, that each can commit to reading, this month.

Also, keep your eyes open for any books that work for 8(E), 7(V), and 5(I) - we have a lot!

If you have any questions about whether the color of your cover works, you can check TinEye, or simply post it here. (If needed, Annalisa or I can take the cover in question to the captains' color deciding thread to make the determination.)

Let the games begin! :)

Sharon (sharon_alexandr) | 346 comments I won Sunday Best by Ann Lineberger in a Goodreads Giveaway. It will count for a red cover, so I can push it off to February. I'll look through my library lists and see what else I can take out now and read in February.

message 17: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1743 comments Hi Sharon, welcome to the team. Do you know if it will work for a 1, 3, or 7? Those are our red cards for February.

message 18: by Alejandra (new)

Alejandra | 231 comments Hi, checking in. First time playing. I read mostly romance, both historical and paranormal, and fantasy. But I will read almost any gender except horror.

Welcome to the team Alejandra. If you have any questions please ask.

We read similar books so hopefully we can find a few books to use as a reverse.

Annalisa | 1743 comments I've been working on setting up shelves for colored books as have many of the other captains. You can search for the shelves and should be able to see the books that we have shelved as the four different colors for uno cards. I'm going to put the links below. More books will be added as books are added to the selves.

Yellow Books
Blue Books
Red Books
Green Books

I've added these links at the top as well, so it is easy to find.

message 27: by Alejandra (new)

Alejandra | 231 comments About reverse books, does it have to be a book read in the challenge or previous books are valid to?

message 28: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1743 comments Reverse has to be read by another team member, but doesn't need to be during the challenge. Any of their past read books count.

I think it might work for a 3 with one of the character's names.

Teddie (teddieg) | 1115 comments Sharon wrote:”I think it might work for a 3 with one of the character's names."

Great! Looks like there is a character, Jackie Hunt, so it works :)

message 31: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1743 comments LaurLa, yes please do add books to uno color shelves.

I'm sure you should have a few good red covered books. I found quite a few historical romance with very red covers. Fantasy seemed to have an abundance of blue covers on my TBR. Almost all of the yellow covers were nonfiction and green was a mix of genres for me. I'm curious to see if others find that certain genres are more likely to have a certain color cover.

message 36: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1743 comments Hi Keri, Welcome to the team and glad you are here. When you get a chance let us know if there are any of the color cards for the month you can read for. Also, let us know if you have any favorite genres.

message 37: by Keri (new)

Keri | 642 comments It’s my second year doing UNO and last year started my addiction to group challenges and love of them so I can’t wait for this year!!
I read mostly YA and some adult. Mainly fantasy with some thriller and historical fiction mixed in. Occasional contemporary books but I’m so picky with those that I read them less. I love retellings also.

message 38: by Keri (new)

Keri | 642 comments I’ll look through my books and the lists to see what I have color-wise. I remember yellow always stumped my team last year!

message 40: by TR (new)

TR | 137 comments Hi and thanks for the warm welcome, I'm Tom. I could write a book about myself but I won't. I'm sure pieces will just come out naturally. For now, I live in Michigan, so I can't wait for winter to do it's thing. This is my first time playing this so I'm sure I'll need a lot of guidance on how to play. The thing I collect is playing cards, because its something every airport/gift shop has and one of the subsets of that is UNO cards, which is one of my favorite games so once I heard this was a thing, I had to give it a try.

message 41: by TR (new)

TR | 137 comments There is a series behind me, Tom Clancy's Op-Center, that I have the first 11 books for. I think its up to 17 now so I'm a little behind but for the purposes of this challenge, I notice we have a lot of 6-9 this month....Just a thought.

message 42: by TR (last edited Jan 16, 2019 02:14PM) (new)

TR | 137 comments So I counted and the 7th book in the series is blue, Divide and Conquer (Tom Clancy's Op-Center, #7) by Jeff Rovin

Bicycle has been coming out with some cool versions of cards - I play a lot too. I just got a deck that is about half the width of normal cards - those I keep in my purse, just in case ;)
