message 5: by Daniela (last edited Jan 17, 2019 01:30PM) (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments I know Christina already mentioned most of this, but just to make sure:

📚 Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count. The challenge starts on Friday February 1, 2019 at 7pm AEDST (Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time).

📚 Books must be more than 100 pages in length. If it is a Childrens book or a graphic novel, we need to verify it is more than 25,000 words on arbookfind.com.

📚 Your finished books need to be on your UNO shelf AND marked as "read" for them to count.

📚 Please make notes of how your book may count. The more options we have the better! (Letters used in UNO are Z,O,T,H,F,I,V,E,S,N,K,P and of course if another team member has read the book before. Please friend our team members!)

📚 For book titles starting with an article (A/An/The), the article can be ignored or used. So The Hiding Place, for example, could be used as title starting with T or H

📚Re-reads are ok provided it has been more than 6 months since last read

📚 This is a social challenge, not a competitive one. We'd love to get points, but the main aim of the game is to have fun, read lots and get to know each other :)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments Hey everyone! :)

I'm Daniela, your captain for this challenge. This is my third time playing UNO, second year as captain.

Once you checked in, please leave a link with your bookshelf for this challenge + its name. It makes it easier for us to track your books.

Important rules will be posted in the first few comments by either me or the co-captains. I have big exams coming up, so I probably won't get to it until next weekend, but we still have plenty of time :)

hahahah Daniela, this is both our 4th time playing UNO actually - you got me into it in 2016, remember? ;)

so yeah, Hi everyone *waves*

my name is Christina, I live in Austria, and this is my third time co-captaining. I mainly read thrillers and mysteries/crimes, but also need something 'light' here and there inbetween, and I'm always open to suggestions :)
I work as a waitress in my family's restaurant, and I love going to concerts + english only cinemas, to play cards with my mum and her friends, and to walk our dog when the weather isn't too yucky lol.

my uno shelf: uno-challenge-2019

please introduce yourselves and get familiar with the rules while we're trying to set everything up (I'm putting all the important information /links above until Daniela gets a chance to even it out and/or add things in her comments after her exams.)

if you got any questions, don't hesitate to ask. we've got another co-captain and me who will be here to help :)

Catie Currie | 133 comments Hello everyone!
My name is Catie. This my 2nd year of both Uno and being a co-captain. I live in the US (although I spent last semester in Austria, Christina!) and I'm finishing up my last year of college right now. I like pretty much everything fiction, although crime and sci-fi are probably my least favorites. I'm really excited for this year's uno and getting to know all of you!

I studied in Gaming, it's about 3 hrs from Vienna by train! I did spend a lot of time in Vienna though :)
I also went to Mariazel, Melk, and Salzburg (if we're only talking about Austria!)

Jackie | 338 comments Hi everyone,

My name is Jackie and I live in North Carolina in the US. My favorite genres are fantasy, mystery, and historical fiction but I'll read just about anything. This is my first time playing Uno so I'll be studying the rules and may have some questions. Looking forward to the game and to getting to know you all.

I'm participating in the Popsugar Reading Challenge this year as well, but I doubt I'll be able to finish it. Trying my best though :)

My university has a program there so I just took core classes that were required for my major :P Really the only thing in Gaming is my university's campus haha so you're right, there really isn't much going on! But, I only spent 4 days a week there, the 3 I traveled, so it didn't really matter.

Megan Morning!

First time Uno player and I started rereading through the rules yesterday, probably will keep this tab open on my computer just to refer back to.
I'm from the UK. I'm pretty diverse in my genres. I read romances, YA, Fantasy, Sci-fi and sometimes mystery or crime. I usually try and go for free books or using my subscriptions to Scribd and Kindle Unlimited. I'm newly married and we bought our first house in August so money goes to fixing the house up first sadly.

I also have this thread on instant email notification but work recently banned gmail so may sometimes be slower :-l

My shelf is called Uno 2019

message 20: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments Another newbie, welcome Megan!

I'm sure it will be helpful if you keep the rules open in another tab. The only thing you really need to remember for the cards is which letters you need to look out for for this challenge: Z, O, T, H, F, I, S, V, E, N, K, P

and how they will work:
- #0-9 in title
- title
- author first or last name
- character first, last, or nick name
- main setting
- stand alone, or #1-9 in series

It might seem a bit much to remember at first but I'm sure you'll all get the hang of it pretty soon, especially if you finish books and post them regularly ;)

message 21: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments I usually check the goodreads app more often than my emails (and my mailbox is filling up with junk anyway) so I only have notifications on on goodreads, and I love seeing those red little numbers for notifs popping up 😊

This is a great idea for all of us though - please turn on notifications for this thread, whether it'll be instant email or just on the website. Don't forget to check in regularly though!

Megan Christina wrote: "I usually check the goodreads app more often than my emails (and my mailbox is filling up with junk anyway) so I only have notifications on on goodreads, and I love seeing those red little numbers ..."

I cannot stand the app. Just so difficult to use in my opinion. I use the browser on my phone and then set it to desktop mode for this site so I can view it properly. I also have the GR emails sent to its own special folder so I can pick them out quicker but don't get a notification all the time? I get so many from other groups with the messages and then newsletters and stupid spam from GR about your favourite genre emails I just had to organise it away from constant view. I'm good usually at checking and remembering to check once I sign up for these sort of challenges.

I'll keep an eye and mark the books that fit those letters for possible reads for when we get started :-)

Colleen | 293 comments Hi! I'm Colleen from Minnesota, USA and read pretty much anything. Now that I have a commute to work and try and go running when I can (my second half marathon in June!) I have upped my books read per year by quite a bit. I'm in 3 real-life book clubs so those books usually take precedence on my reading schedule. Actually heading to one tonight for At the Water's Edge which I recall as pretty good, but I read it back in 2016 and honestly don't really remember it & had to look up a book summary & reread the ending chapters.

It's my second year playing UNO & I love it! So impressed by super readers - I hang in there best I can.

I love our group name as Nancy Drew was a favorite read back in elementary school where I could read a mystery of hers in a day.

My UNO shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Looking forward to playing with you all! I'll be sure to structure my reading to best finish books prior to 2/1 & start any new ones on 2/1 so I don't get too far behind as it can take me 1-2+ weeks to finish a book, but I read and listen to 2 books at once so that seems to help it all go quicker.

yeah the app definitely needs some getting used to... but it's nice to be able to quickly 'stop by' to check if everything's going as planned or if anybody got some questions :)

//

the cards that are hardest to fill are the coloured cards + Wild Draw 4's as we have to dublicate coloured cards for those.
as you can see in our spreadsheet we need to cover 1 Red, 2 Red, 4 Red (x2), 7 Yellow, 8 Green, and 9 Green, as well as four Wild Draw 4's in February.

if you get the chance please go through your books already and let us know if you can cover any of these :)

Hi Colleen, welcome!

since pretty much every book works for one card or another I'm sure we'll fit in your book club books without any problems :)

I wish I was one of those super readers haha, but I just can't *hides face* challenges always motivate me to read more, but I can also end up feeling a bit drained at some point. (happened to me after ttvi last summer and I haven't read a book for months afterwards!)

it's okay if it takes you longer to finish books, just remember to check in at least once a week so we know you're still playing :)

message 27: by Christina (last edited Jan 16, 2019 02:25AM) (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments The Rules of Magic definitely works as I remember it being on UNO Pixie's uno-yellow book shelf - the other two I will have to check when I'm on my laptop (sometimes the colors look so different from phone to PC...)

message 28: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments Jackie wrote: "Would Battle of the Ampere (Michael Vey, #3) by Richard Paul Evans by Richard Paul Evans work for 8 green?"

message 31: by Catie (new)

Catie Currie | 133 comments Jackie wrote: "What percentage of the color do the covers have to be?"

More than 50% I believe :)

message 32: by Christina (last edited Jan 16, 2019 01:10PM) (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments It's always a bit complicated with coloured covers. More than 50% used to be the ruling, but tineye isn't always right either when it comes to colours and not every person sees colours the exact same way, if that makes sense.

Now the main 'rule' for colours is 'use common sense' lol. e.g. when a cover really stands out as yellow even if it's only 40% it is okay to use. It's complicated x) I'll give a cover example when I'm on my laptop tonight, but most people still go by the 50% rule because it makes things easier.

EDIT: this is the example Hitch 22 A Memoir by Christopher Hitchens - even though the black writing takes up too much space, it still is a yellow cover (at 40% yellow on tineye)

message 33: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments Sisa, it seems like we're getting the OK for Nine Perfect Strangers being green which means I might read it as well for uno at some point :)

//

Coloured cards can (and should) be claimed if possible, but even if two people end up reading for the same card it's no problem because we need to cover the Wild Draw 4's as well :)

I'll start adding your names to the coloured cards in our spreadsheet after work, but I can also keep track in my first post on top if y'all prefer.

message 34: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 338 comments I'm planning to read Fire (Graceling Realm, #2) by Kristin Cashore soon. It is over 50% red according to Tineye and should work for 4 Red.

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments Sisa wrote: "If someone was thinking about reading An Anonymous Girl, I think it would work for 4 Red. The synopsis says that the main character's name is Jessica Farris. I might read it myself ..."

wow this looks so interesting!! but I'm afraid I won't be able to get the book :(

Jackie wrote: "I'm planning to read Fire (Graceling Realm, #2) by Kristin Cashore soon. It is over 50% red according to Tineye and should work for 4 Red."

awesome, and it should work in my opinion :)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments It seems like we're only missing one more team member, then we're complete :)

I'm trying to keep up with the chat, but studying keeps me too busy. However, I'll put important info out this weekend already so the newbies have enough time to get familiar with everything :)

Once my exams are over I'll be more active, promise ;)

message 37: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments And I see Christina already worked her magic on the spreadsheet!!!! :D

I encourage you to add other members as friends so you can see what they've read :) We got 7 reverse cards, so that might come in handy :)

message 38: by Megan (new)

Megan I feel bad I wanted to claim a coloured card task but there isn't one I can find easily. I may have found one. Does Cold Judgment by Joanne Fluke by Joanne Fluke work for Red 4? Found it on Scribd after ages and ages of hunting to find a book that could work

If I'm reading the rules right we have 4 Wild card 4(s). So I could read the same coloured book with The Tao of Pooh that Sisa said she would read for card red 2?

message 39: by Megan (new)

Megan Hiya, the book I was going to read for red 4 is the Joanne Fluke one. The way I read the rules is you need to duplicate one of the coloured books so i assume someone else would need to read the duplicate?

I'm a first timer though so could be completely off base there.

message 40: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments about the Wild Draw 4's - you only need to duplicate a coloured card, not the book another person was reading for the coloured card. I hope that makes sense :)

so, Megan, you still can read Cold Judgment by Joanne Fluke for a WD4 while the red cards are already filled with other books :)

message 41: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments I found a bit of free time and updated the first few comments. You'll find everything important Christina hasn't already mentioned :) and it's an easy way to find everything for this challenge!

message 42: by Megan (new)

Megan Ahhh so, if I found another red card that works for that as well, can I duplicate it? Or is it meant to be a different person doing it?

Just wondering if something on my TBR called Royally Arranged (Bad Boy Royals #3) by Nora Flite or is that too much of a guy on the cover

message 43: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments It didn't have to be a different person, but unfortunately this does not work for a red card, Megan :(

message 44: by Megan (new)

message 46: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments *have you already made plans what to read is what I actually wanted to ask 🤦🏼‍♀️wow

message 47: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments Ikr, I wish we could already start reading for uno!!

I'm not much of a planner when it comes to books as I normally read what I'm in the mood for when I start a new book, but I have generally planned out what I might or could read for popsugar...

Btw Sisa you might want to hold off on your blue book in case we need it next month or in April (if you don't mind), so far I think it would work for 0, 3, and 6 ;)

message 48: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments I have NO idea what to read yet .. I might start with the first Nancy Drew book - to get a feeling for our group name
