If you have any questions about the challenge - please write them here.
Here are some of the questions that have been asked and answered so far:

Question: When will we know what crossword puzzle we will be assigned?
Answer: Teams will be announced around the 25th and they'll receive their puzzles at that time as well.

Question: If an answer is guessed, and it's wrong... can those books then be used again for a different answer or are the letters from them just null and void? How does that work?
Answer: So if a guess is incorrect, I will be doing any of the following options:
1. If you had certain letters correct/incorrect for that said word - I will let you know. For example, if the second letter of that word is somehow wrong - I would let you know that the one space is wrong.
2. If you are completely wrong. Those books can either be used for another guess on that clue (if they work) or go towards another clue.

However, if you have 6 letters done but it's a 7 letter word, you wont know as a team if you were correct or not until the 7th book is done and posted.

The way I'm going to do scores, which is kind of what I do now anyways, is when you are guessing for a certain clue - I will put the letter you are reading for and the book. That way if you guys switch anything around - you and I will know where those books are going.

Question: So say the answer was a flower. Would you answer a book for every letter in the word flower? And does it need to be books that you have already read?
Answer: So every book started and finished since February 1st till March 31st will count for this challenge towards a clue. Book started before February will only count for page points. Also, yes, a book will ONLY count towards ONE letter. Whether you use the author's first/last initial or the book title or series title.

However, using the example FLOWER and LOVE where they are both combined by the same letter: aka L - then you would only have to read a book for L once. It doesn't matter if you read the L for FLOWER or LOVE, if you read it for the L in FLOWER, then the L in LOVE will have a "BOOK NOT NEEDED" space.

Question: Where are we posting guesses to the crosswords? On the spreadsheet?
Answer: So you will need to fill out the blank crossword and add your guesses on the clue's tab as well. You can add your books to it as well but you still need to post on your review tab as follows:
A Crown of Wishes (The Star-Touched Queen, #2) by Roshani Chokshi
Review: add link
Buddy: add link
Pages: #
Crossword that you have: Letter and # (across or down).

That way you don't have to specify your guess. I will be adding what book is for what letter to the review thread when doing scores as well - just in case. Plus it will make things easier on me and you guys if you move books around.

Question:
When we are posting books, do all the books for one answer have to be one type? For example, all author initials, or all book title? Or, can we use different "types" as needed?
Answer: Good question! No, for one word you do not have to use only book titles, series titles, or authors. You can mix and match. I think on the sign up sheet I was just giving you options on how you can use the books towards the letters you might have. It’s up to you really on how you want to use your book.

Question: when you write what books you read, do you put it under where it says books read?

Would it look like this:
Hunger Games:
Review:( is it the URL for the page where your link is on.)
Buddy:( do you have to include this even if you did not have a buddy)
Pages( however many pages are in Hunger Games)
Crossword:( if it was for the letter A #1 across you put that)
Answer: You will only post like that on the team's review thread. As for buddy reads, you only add the link if you have participated in that or the BOTM. You don't have to add "buddy:" if you haven't.

For pages, it will be the most rated page count. So for The Hunger Games, you will click the "all editions" which is located under "other editions" on the books main page. The first book you see (at the top), which for this one will be 374 pages - you will use that. In some cases the first book wont have a page count, then you would use the book that's right under it.

Now if you are asking about the clue tab on your teams spreadsheet, then you would just add the book in the book section, your name, the page count (that I stated above), say yes/no to buddy, then it will automatically count the points for you.

However, the SS doesn't calculate BOTM pts - but know that I will.

Question: So I have a question. I'll be reading The Collected Plays of Sophocles for my class this month (and the next) and I have already started. Now, when I looked up "The Collected Plays of Sophocles" on GR, the top result was this: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Now my translators are different. I mean, I'm using James Scully's translations and they are really different. So when I checked out the various editions of this book, it showed that edition even though the translators are different and well, my book is about 840 pages long and this one is about 420 pages (so about half of it). Will I be getting points according to the 840 then, though or the 420, if I add it? I don't want to add individual plays because some of them might not be over a 100 pages.
Answer: So we use the most rated edition of books for page count regardless of which edition you read. That just makes it easier on us mods when we check that it's the correct page count.

And for plays it's half the page count. So the most rated edition is 420 pages which you would divide in half.. So you'd get points for 210 pages. Which would equal 2 points.

Question:Am I allowed to use an author's middle initial towards a letter?

For example, Arwen Elys Dayton. I'd like to use the E.
Answer: Hmm, good question. If the author has a middle name (that is shown on the GR - via book's main page), then yes, I will allow you to use that towards a letter. Or if they always go by their full name as well.

Back to my original question/example about the flower. If the answer was flower can we only say that the answer is a flower if we have read a book that begins with each letter of flower.

You can start putting in your guesses on the SS right now. I think all but one team has done this already. You just can read books for it until the 1st.

Do you mean on the SS? Like on the clues tab?

If you do, then you will be adding your answers on the blank crossword and you will add your answers to the clues tab as well. As for your reviews, like how you post on your teams review thread - you will let me know what clue you are posting for (for example, #1 Across) and then what letter the book is going towards.

After you have all the books read for the word that you are guessing, I will let you know if it's correct or not. However, since we gave you the first crossword a bit early I've been helping the teams know if they were correct or not while they were guessing. We can give you a different kind of clue if any of the clues stump you and your teammates. I will also let you know if one of your guesses is completely wrong too.

If I confused you at all, let me know.

You can talk to your team about what you plan to read and see if any wants to do a buddy read with your. Depending on what your team decides you can add books to the SS or not.

message 19: by Esther (new)

Esther | 1862 comments On the spreadsheet under where it says planned books, does a number go there or does the name of the book you are planning to read go there? Same for under where it says books read.

Is there somewhere where we need to put what books we have read?

Do you need to Buddy read?

Planned books, on the info tab will be the number you plan per month. I can add those for each member if you'd like since I made the teams. Just haven't gotten around to it yet.

As for the clues tab, where it has the section books read for the letters, you can add it there. It's most for your teammates to know that you've claimed that specific letter for that team.

Then there's buddy reads. No you don't necessarily need to but it does give your teams more points if you do.

Cristina, it's no problem with you changing your number. As for the team, I'm showing you on Team Get A Clue - not Team Without A Clue. So yes, you can stay on your actual team still (aka Get a Clue).

Felicia | 15003 comments BookWorm wrote: "is there a place where you type the answers to the crossword puzzle?"

Each team has a SS that you have to request access to. That is where you the answers are, if your team has filled them in already.

When you write reviews you will only write what letter your using. You'll write reviews like this:

Review: add link
Buddy: add link
Pages: add most rated page count
Crossword: Letter A for #1 Across

You will only post like that on the team's review thread. As for buddy reads, you only add the link if you have participated in that or the BOTM. You don't have to add "buddy:" if you haven't.

Yeah, it doesn't matter about the edition you read, the translator, the published date. None of that matters when it comes to page points. We only go off of the most rated edition. It's just much easier for us mods to verify that no one is cheating. (it's happened in the past)
