As per "Mr Mayor" or the village head, there's absolutely no need for K.'s services and they're not particularly sure if they even asked that one be sent to them... What does this mean? Well, one needs more Kafka to decipher the message hidden in this bizzare situation, for instance: Der LandArzt == The Country Doctor << Country = Land = Earth !! To measure == show the limits, of what? >> of the Earth!
In Short: Ethics has become unnecessary in the current age where supply and demand and power with little to no regard to ethics holds sway.
That's the beauty of it - though of the hundreds of studies of Kafka, I'm not aware of any that has gotten to see this vital point.....
so it goes..... and then one should not ignore the two "assistants" who are thrown into the story for some comic relief.... the upcoming marriage of K. to Frieda (Frieden=peace) which, naturally, never happens (they should have run off to Spain....) But one of the assistants manages to win her back leaving K., as always, out in the cold for his most memorable conversation with Buergel who asks him: "Do you know who Friedrich is?".... K. doesn't....
