So yeah, the title is pretty much explaining it.

When you read the book, was there anything that made you go: Wow, I didn't expect this?
The plot, the world-building, anything like that?

More so the lack of established love interests in the tales.

Not one character was in a relationship. There was a hint of the start of one in the second tale. But the characters were all fighting for their own rights to be themselves.

It's just rare to read anything that doesn't immediately have a romantic relationship intregal to the plot.
