Lily loved sitting next to the fire in the Gryffindor common room, but when she really needed some time to think, she went down to the edge of the Black Lake, took her shoes and socks off, and sat by the dock, letting the cold water drift between her toes. She was able to just lay back and see the water shift, the thousands of trees surrounding her, and the magnificent castle beside her. Sitting there in silence reminded her of how grateful she was to be able to attend Hogwarts, to find other people like her and stop being the freak, as Petunia put it.
But even Hogwarts, which had always been her safe space, was beginning to feel strange, particularly this year. Maybe it was the whispers in the hallways, how purebloods were just a little more comfortable throwing around insults to muggleborns, how she had to read the Daily Prophet every morning to calm her anxiety for her family, or maybe it was how she had to deal with everything without her best friend.
To be fair, Severus had slowly stopped being his friend over years, not suddenly overnight. Last year had just been the final straw. But still, having a friendship that had lasted years, that she thought would last many more, made her a little sadder, a little more disappointed, and a little more afraid of what's to come.
