Heather, I've never heard of him. He reminds me a bit of the Thomas Kinkade holiday cards that Hallmark sells (with the bright lights in the windows of the houses).
You’re right, Connie. He does remind me a little bit of Thomas Kinkade. I actually like Terry Redlin’s work better, though. It seems a bit more realistic. I love the lighting he brings in with the sunsets. It’s more natural. Thank you for your comment Geoffrey. Personally, I wouldn’t hang one of his paintings in my home, just not my style, but for someone not into fine art, I think they would look good in a mountain cabin or lodge...
It seems Redlin was frequently named "America's most popular artist" in annual gallery surveys conducted by U.S. Art magazine during the 1990s.I doubt here in Europe anybody ever heard of him. I certainly hadn’t until this poll.
I’m a bit divided about how to valuate him as an artist.
The pic you posted Heather is indeed a bit corny, but online I found some I did like…

Still pretty commercial...
He sure liked to paint geese ;-)
I also found this column from the Grand Forks Herald published after his death in 2016.

Right. He has some wide acclaim around Washington. His work is well known and sells well in those parts! I have to say I was just waiting for that comment from you, Ruth. Lol I know it’s definitely not your cup of tea!
That’s a great article, Dirk! Thank you for sharing that. It sheds a different light on that ‘kind’ of art. Family-oriented, American freedom, etc. And the way he mentions Terry Redlin along with Norman Rockwell kind of having the same vision and bringing it home to us.
Dakota wrote: "This is to the people who think Terry Redlin and Norman Rockwell are corny. There are some of us that are less cultured than you that appreciate there art. Us uncultured people are the men and woma..."Well, Dakota. I'm assuming you're new to the group? Apparently, you didn't read or understand the rules.
I'm glad to hear that you appreciate art at least, and if you are one of the mentioned "soldiers, farmers, or craftsman", I thank you for what you do.
But, I'm sorry, with all due respect to the group members and the quality of this group, and adhering to the rules, I must ask you to not target anyone person or people in the group. We do NOT condemn anyone else's comments if they are only opinions. Now we know your opinion and I ask that you keep your thoughts to yourself if you can't say anything nice, or you're welcome to leave the group now.
Thank you.
Chris wrote: "Artistic commercialism ... not true/serious art. IMHO ..."Hey Chris!
You're a new 'voice'. Welcome if you're just joining us, or just thank you for commenting. I like your description "Artistic Commercialism". Sure, I can see it that way.
Chris wrote: "Artistic commercialism ... not true/serious art. IMHO ..."Exactly, Chris. that was succinctly put and right on target. And yes, if it were on a post card, and I do send out quite a few, I would purchase it and mail it. But this is hardly my taste. It's not bad, but considering how much more better works of art are out there, why would anyone want to buy this, except if one had a log cabin in the woods.
These images would be great on duck stamps that the feds sell for hunting licenses.
Artistic Commercialism is indeed the right term! You can buy a lot of his stuff online:
How about a puzzle with 2000 pieces, guaranteed hours of pleasure!

But...don't you think..at least some commercial art can be good, real good I mean..not everything that is sold is necessarily bad,I mean...There are so many artists selling great paintings and painting lessons ,online and otherwise, and all these materials are rather expensive,as I understand (never knew these were so expensive, until recently ) and a person has to do what one must to survive..
The dude reminds me of that frizzy-haired guy who taught painting on TV. He used a particular kind of brush he referred to as his "mighty brush"(or something like that). Efficient, productive and talented, but not exactly transcendent.
A slight reconsideration ... the landscape with rising quail(partridges?) is pretty nice, especially the left side of the painting. The woodpile ain't right, however, and probably shouldn't even be there

Now that I can actually see the paintings you posted, Dirk, I have to agree with you. I do appreciate the ones you posted much more than the one I chose. I really didn't put a lot of thought into the one I put up with the poll, only that I picked one of the many with a sunset so I could demonstrate one of his top 'themes' in his paintings.
And I have to say, compared to the ones you posted, mine is very much more corny! LOL
Well, it's not Sunday yet, but I am leaving town again in the morning and again I won't have my PC to help me add much to the group. I'm sorry about my frequent absences! But I want to disclose the reason I posted this particular question. And as I said in the comments under the poll, I SO appreciate everyone's votes and comments! That really helps me out a lot!!!
And here is the reason. So, as I said, I am in the process of moving to the state of Washington to the city of Sequim kind of near Seattle. We were very fortunate that my husband's elderly great-uncle left us his house and a cottage in the back yard where he is going to reside so he's close to us in case he needs anything but not in our way.
We found out just a few days ago that he has a "lady friend", as he regards her. She had an art gallery in Bellingham, Washington but she now is suffering from cancer and had to move into an assisted living home and close her gallery. Very sad.
So, my husband was talking to his uncle the day before I posted that poll and was telling him how much I am into art, even about this group. His uncle brought up the topic of his "lady friend's" closed gallery and that very day his uncle went out and bought it for me!!! I am ecstatic! I don't know how long it has been closed but I know I will be like a kid in a candy story when I go through it! This is definitely a dream come true!
To add to my delightful dream, my husband, the wonderful man that he is, knew I've always wanted to open my own art and decor store. So he allotted me a bit of money, bought a store for sale and is letting me take the reigns! I haven't been up there since he's done all this but I'm already making plans for the layout, purchasing some items, etc. Really, sometimes I have to pinch myself to make sure I'm not going to wake up to reality. It's almost surreal!
Alright, after saying all that, the reason I asked about Terry Redlin, is because he is the artist whom she displayed most in her gallery and from what I hear, his art sold quite well. This is the reason I wanted to know your opinions on his work, knowing that this group is very advanced, educated, and experienced in the art world.
I'm going to take some of the art from her closed gallery to add to my store. Of course, I plan to have sculptures, antique lamps, desks, etc., too. I haven't had much time to think it all through yet, but I will be headed back up there tomorrow to finally see what opportunities I have. I also want to renovate and restore her gallery so I will definitely have my hands full!
If anyone is ever in or near Sequim or Bellingham or Seattle, I would love to meet you and you could check out my store, Gallery Cornucopia.
Congratulations! And best of luck. While it's true that Redlin may have been one of the "lady friend's" preferred artists, don't hesitate to develop a stable of artists that YOU feel strong about. And while you may be including a lot of antiques and curiosities, for fine art keep an eye on the students emerging (BFA and MFA) from the colleges there in the Pacific Northwest. You just might find some real gems that are already showing some polish!
Good luck with your store, Heather! I've heard that people on the West Coast are much more into buying photography as artwork for their homes compared to the East Coast. Many artists are willing to sell on consignment.
You are indeed very lucky Heather! As I understand correctly you are talking about an antique store in Sequim and a gallery in Bellingham…
So are you going to manage two businesses at once?
And if I’m correct both towns are separated by quiet a big expanse of water… but maybe your husband or uncle has a boat too?
About the gallery I second Ellen’s suggestion that you don’t forget to look at the new students graduating each year.
Redlin may sell well, but you have to educate the public a bit, they cannot appreciate what they don’t know.
And may I suggest getting yourself an ipad or small laptop😜
So you don’t have to wait to see the posted pics complete 😉
Thank you all so much! And great suggestions, too! I will definitely look into new artists, photographers, ones who would want to sell on consignment...Geoffrey suggested selling jewelry, too. I hadn’t thought of that but I’m going to try it. You are all so smart!
And Dirk, you’re right, I don’t know who knows what about art. And you are also correct, I am having stores in both places. And I am also very fortunate, he did leave us a boat. 😊
Oh, and when we go up there today, we are meeting my mother-in-law who bought me a laptop and a new PC to help run the stores.
Incredible 😃It's like all your dreams came out at once!
In Flemish we have an old saying: " Ge zijt met uwe neus in de boter gevallen"
Translated it sounds a bit weird: "you've fallen head first with your nose in the butter"
It just means you're very lucky! 😋
Better take care you don't get too overwhelmed: try to enjoy every minute!

Is anyone familiar with Terry Redlin?

I will leave this post up for a week then next Sunday in the Moderator comments I will disclose my reasoning.
