I'm thinking about joining the challenge, but had to comment on your mention of fastnachts. I've lived in Pennsylvania all but three years of my life, and I had never heard of fastnachts until we moved to where we are now. They're obviously a much bigger thing in this part of the state than in other regions :D

It's a PA Dutch thing. I guess if you lived in Western PA, there aren't as many Dutchies, Amish or Mennonites. I wonder if the Amish in other states make them.
