Amyjzed | 50 comments At the end or appendix of Magarshack's translation he has included the chapter called "Stavrogin's Confession- At Tikhon's."

Magarshack notes, "This chapter should have followed Chapter Eight of the Second Part (Ivan the Crown-Prince). The Editor of the Russian Messenger refused to publish it when it was being serialized in his journal. Dostoevsky later tried to revise it, but finally decided to omit it from the first edition of the novel in 1873. It was discovered in 1921 among the papers left by Dostoevsky's wife and first published separately in 1922."

** A note-- for anyone who uses the Dennis Abram's ProjectD blog commentary as they read, Abrams thinks it is important to read Stavrogin's Confession in the order Dostoevsky originally intended, and he makes several entries and comments based on his reading of that chapter after the chapter entitled "Ivan the Crown-Prince."

My personal view: I think it makes sense as well to read the "At Tikhon's/Stavrogin's Confession" chapter in the order it was originally written. I ended up waiting to read it until I had finished the book, partly because I read some comments about the content that made me feel it would be disturbing and that I would have to be mentally prepared to read it. However, I do feel it would have made more sense within the context of the original structure of the plot.
