The corporal, he decided, was a bedrock man, a term he applied to those people, practically invisible, who do things so that others can survive. In good times, they’re ignored, even ridiculed. In bad times, though, they’re indispensable.
Kerstin wrote: "A story that reveals truth is a true story, whether it actually happened of not."
This is a very Tolkienian sentiment.

Yes, I've a friend who is a historian and who until very recently didn't read fiction at all, saying he preferred reality. I've said to him several times in response that "Great fiction is truth told with untrue facts, whereas history is lies told with true facts." Perhaps unfair, but another friend of ours and I have gotten him to pick up Dante, so there is hope.

I am not of quotations but i have read one, which impressed to me "Then you know enough about me to realice that i would consider this utilitarian mantra rubbish. It is nothing more tan a formula for the advantaged and powerful to do what they please. Do not deceive yourself into thinking these are new ideas. Furthermore, they lead to worse tan medieval serfdom because their advocates want to asume all the power but none of the responsability. Lastly, it is devoid of grace and beauty" This quotations can be for the two totalitarian regimes of the prewar, some of the spanish politicians should think in this quote.

I shared because in my country existed a comunist party Podemos, which followed the Gramci`s suggestions are more obsessed with conquering the power, but not the most important to serve the people that you rule. This ideology would be value for the comunist and nazism. Basile reminds me powerfully to the youths of the Austrian`s novel Youth without God was written by Odon von Horvath.
"Examination of conscience was a way of life for him [the Abbot], as natural as breathing." great way of life!"One could learn much by allowing the other person to speak, by listening without thinking about what one would say next."
"Don't count on laws when there are millions to be made."
Gregory of Nyssa: "Ideas create idols; only wonder leads to knowing."'
"Evil is the failure to live freedom well."
From June 13, 1931:
“You seek approbation. We aren’t sycophants, nor shall we ever be”, Jack said. “Do whatever you will, but don’t expect our obeisance if we think you’re being foolish.”
This is a good expression of the University spirit.

At least what it should be - there is precious little sign of it in American academia today. And when it does raise its head it is sure to get lopped off: https://duckduckgo.com/l/?kh=-1&u...

Chapter "May 10-11, 1932" contains the following quotation from Richard II, by Shakespeare:
The purest treasure mortal times afford
Is spotless reputation; that away
Men are but gilded loam or painted clay.
Compare with this quote from A Civil Campaign, by Loys MacMaster Bujold:
“Reputation is what other people know about you. Honor is what you know about yourself... Guard your honor. Let your reputation fall where it will. And outlive the bastards.”
I tend to prefer Bujold's quote to Shakespeare's.
