Hello, I'm new to this, just found out how to add books to my challenge. Yes I'm technically challenged lol. What are your all time favorite nz books (and why be nice). Thanks.

Welcome Emma!
Don't worry about being technically challenged - you're not the only one! *blushes*
My favourite NZ author (& favourite short story author from anywhere!) is Katherine Mansfield
Last year I was really impressed by https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... by Rosetta Allan
I've enjoyed detective books by Vanda Symon

My favorite is probably Thunder Road, I don't think (or at least can't remember) reading other types of NZ books besides the usual kids ones (Hairy Maclary and Margaret Mayhy). The only other one I read was the group read one we did last year which I surprisingly enjoyed (it was thriller/crime and not a genre I normally read).

Hi Emma,I too am new to Goodreads and am also a little unsure of how to wade into these waters...
I'm not actually sure if I have a favourite NZ author. I've read a few NZ novels but I wouldn't rate them amongst those I'd most enjoyed. I'd love for a kiwi author to come along and blow me away though. I love Fantasy novels the most. Any recommendations?
Adam
Hi AdamKiwi authors aren't best known for fantasy, though we do have some in the genre.
You can become more acquainted with the breadth of NZ talent by means of my FlaxFlower reviews -- www.flaxroots.com/flaxflower Look back through the archived reviews and you'll find some fantasy among a wide range of others.
Cheers, Bronwyn
Thanks Bronwyn, I will check that out. I read other genres too. Fantasy is just my favourite to get lost in and kill some hours. It's funny though, many of my favourite books are not Fantasy novels.Adam
Edit: Wow, you have quite an interesting website. There's a lot more there than just reviews. Thanks for sharing the link.
I second Purgatory by Rosetta Allen, and really enjoyed This Mortal Boy by Fiona Kidman. Earlier this year I read the NZ Wars trilogy by Maurice Shadbolt which were interesting and last year read Bulibasha by Witi Ihaemera which I found very moving.
Kathleen wrote: "Adam, have you read Elizabeth Knox? Margaret Mahy's teen novels are fantasy, and David Hair has two series aimed at teens. The Chimes has mixed reviews, but I loved it. Juliet Marillier's Sevenwaters series, and Philippa Ballantine. Sherryl Jordan is for younger people. " No, I haven't read any of those.
I've never deliberately sought out specifically kiwi novels before. I just read whatever takes my fancy when I'm in a book store or library, so the only kiwi books I've read are either by chance or the few I read back in my school days for English class. I think I will make a point of changing that though.
At the end of this year, I will be returning to NZ so I think I will make a point of checking out what my fellow Kiwis have been producing. :) Unfortunately, I don't get as much reading time as I used to. I write late at night which is when I used to read. It's one or the other these days.
Adam
Hi Emma. The books by Elizabeth Knox are great. I agree that Rosetta Allen's book Purgatory is exceptional. Andrene Low writes funny cozy witch mysteries. And I write horror novels!
