I just realized I didn't share my review!

I ended up liking the last part a lot and it made up for some of the rest of the book!

Ella | 67 comments I enjoyed book the third but the first two really took the enjoyment out of it for me. I really think this is a book that needs to be read twice but there’s no way I can do that any time Soon. I have never had to look up what was happening in a book before so that was a new experience but as someone who likes to get lost in books it really is not how I like to read. 3* pulled up from 1.5* purely for the last part.

Good point - with this one you just get lost, you are not actually getting lost in the story!

Kandice | 944 comments I'm just now looking at this thread. I read this a long time ago, but I remember enjoying it. My oldest brother and I spent a few years reading only the books WE WERE SUPPOSED TO READ, but did so ironically. You'd have to know him to get it.

I guess I could have been a bit better at getting lost in the world of this book when I read it because I was reading a ton of Victorian literature at the time. Nothing contemporary. During that same period I discovered my two favorite books, The Scarlet Letter and Tess of the D'Urbervilles, both of which many say they find boring or confusing.

Maybe it's a mindset. I'm a little sad you guys didn't like it better.

Ah, but 4 stars is not too bad of a review from me!😁

I was sad I didn't like it better also. I haven't given up with it yet, I will eventually re-read the book and hopefully be in a better place to enjoy it. I very rarely give five stars to a book anyway, it's kind of how I see them as favourites so to me 3 stars is a good book. I have just bought Tess of the D'Urbevilles on your recommendation though so I'm excited to read that one :)

I remember loving Tess of the D'Urbervilles, but The Scarlet Letter needs a reread as I believe I have it marked 1 star!

That's also moved up my to buy list now, I always try to read people's favourite books.

Kandice | 944 comments Hardy is so depressing, but Tess is such a great story that you can forgive that.

I don't care for Hawthorne's writing in general, but The Scarlet Letter is just... perfect.

I'm thrilled you guys might read something just because I love it!
