Started this today because I had a free afternoon in the hammock and it seemed perfect. Got to page 89 (view spoiler)
I'll be honest, I forgot about this one til I saw it on my calendar! Charging up my e-reader and will start in the next couple days!
I'm at page 150 now, and I find myself thinking about this book even after I've put it down!I've only read one other Stephen King book, and that was really a Bachman book - The Long Walk. His writing is incredible.
(view spoiler)
I've just made it to Part 4 and I have a theory about the Yellow Card Man now. Since this is my first real King novel, I'm not sure how obvious his writing is, so I'm not sure how accurate my theory will end up being.Former King fans, can you fill me in?
I cannot believe it either, truly, but I'm done this book! Finishing it in less than a week was something I never thought I'd be able to manage, but I was so engrossed in it I had to know what would happen. My predictions ended up being about half right and half wrong, which was awesome, imo.
Yeah, this is definitely turning into on of those books you want to stay up late for! Even though you're done I'll mark spoilers in case someone else wants to jump in. He just met (view spoiler).
Also, since this is your first King book you may not catch it but this book is super meta, which he has been doing with his more recent books. After so many years of consistently setting books in Maine and creating Derry, it doesn't feel intrusive for him to sprinkle in so may call backs. I love it, personally.
Brave if you want to sink into another King book, my personal favorites are The Stand, The Shining (don't let the movie color your opinion, they're very different), Salem's Lot and....oh geez so many good ones. Thinner, and The Regulators. IT is good but very very dense. The Tommyknockers is just bad (sorry, Stephen, I love you but its true).
I've never seen The Shining because I am 100% a CHICKEN and usually scared of...everything. But I definitely want to read more of his stuff! I really, really enjoyed this book, and I feel like returning to it when I've read more of his stuff will be even more enjoyable somehow. Not really a (view spoiler).
I about cried reading the part where Ellen says Harry was killed in the war. And the "guardian angel" this is really interesting. Especially loved the conversation with him and Marnie, it added a cool angle of ok what if God really is in on this too.
But like you read about this kind of weird stuff once in a while!! People showing up right place right time and disappearing again!
Lindsay wrote: "But like you read about this kind of weird stuff once in a while!! People showing up right place right time and disappearing again!"Yes, exactly! I had that same thought. Time travelers?!
Ok I cried reading the part about the high school play. so idyllic and sweet and meaningful and WAY TO POKE OUR HEART, KING.
Lindsay wrote: "Ok I cried reading the part about the high school play. so idyllic and sweet and meaningful and WAY TO POKE OUR HEART, KING."I found myself super teary throughout several parts where he's in that area, for one reason or another. I don't even know why! I guess just being able to feel the character's happiness.
Lindsay wrote: "I full ugly cried when Mimi died"ME TOO. I cried so hard, my husband and 14-year-old checked on me several times that day, hahaha!
I wasn't expecting him to get beat up, I'm just at the part where he's recovering. I think its the first plot turn so far that I do not like. It feels repetitive after the stuff with Sadie, which I expected after so much talk of the husband. I also get the "past doesn't want to be changed" but I guess I wanted something other than "he ignored his loud instinctual warning and got beat up"
Lindsay wrote: "I am not going to be able to finish this by next week but the week after that I can!"No worries at all! I didn't expect to be able to finish it in, like, a week.
I also thought that him getting beaten up was a little ehhh, but I don't really know what to expect from Stephen King, and at that point I was so gripped into the story, I was just consuming it quickly.
hahaha oh yeah, I ugly cried. Even the cat was concerned. If you want to do another I'm down!! I have one or two that would qualify for this challenge. Hearts in Atlantis, Under the Dome, and Revival are all sitting on my shelf. Most of his other stuff I've already read but I'm also totally willing to buddy read with you outside thus group, just through messages.
What are you in the mood for - something SCARY, or something a little more contemplative like 11/22/63.
(I'm also rereading IT with another group in Sept-Oct but truthfully that is not a good Intro to King book)
Actually The Stand might be a good place to go next because it's got a big picture feel similar to 11/22/63 in the "save the world" way, and a lot of good interpersonal relationships, but has some HORROR in it

I'm open to any of it!
Let's do The Stand. I'm about due to read it and I'd love to see someone's initial reaction to it! When would you like to start?

Yeah its definitely a two month book. Would you like Sept-Oct or Oct-Nov? it's a nice halloween season book
