Alexis | 91 comments Not sure where to put this, so I think general fits best. For those of you who buy second hand books, what are the best fantasy books/series you've found in charity shops/thrift stores and other such places for dirt cheap prices.

Reason I ask is because I entered in a charity shop recently and it looks as if one person had hauled a big load of fantasy books for donation and I have slowly, and often been buying a few every time I go in. There is probably 30-40 books in there and I am slowly bringing them all home. The woman at the till was like wow you must read a lot! Well, no, maybe about one book a month or less but I may as well stock up on these series while they're here and at about £1-2 each.

First thing I did was buy a bunch of books, all the first in various series so no one else would be tempted to buy a series as a whole, and now I'm just collecting the remainders in the series and hope no one else has the need to buy sequels lol.

Some authors I've snagged are
Naomi Novik
Melanie Rawn
Julia Grey
Anne Rice
Ben Aarononvich
Raymond E. Heist
David Farland
Philippa Ballentine
Ian Irvine
Sara Douglass
Kate Elliot
Sean Russell
Maggie Furey
Janny Wurts
Julian May
Karen Miller
Tad Williams
L.E Modesitt Jr,
Terry Brookes

And possibly some more to come but thats all I can see on my shelf right now.Still many books left to get. :P

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The best find was Exorcisms and Ecstasies. I bought it for $5. Some years later when I looked for a copy for my son, I couldn't find it for less than $200. After a couple of years, I found him a copy for $60 & snatched it.

I used to shop in them a lot more, but that was back before the Internet. It was a fun & frustrating experience. Fun because I got to see all the books, remember the ones I liked & look through so many others. Frustrating because I'd find the most popular parts of series, especially the second book of trilogies over & over without finding the first or third.

Alexis | 91 comments I've picked up a few Folio Society books in charity shops too, in hopes one is a little valuable. They look good on the shelf while they age in value too. I sold about 5 so far but I've got two at the moment.

Joseph | 1651 comments When I was young (still in high school/college), a used book store (Books & Things) opened up near me, and somebody in my hometown must've gotten rid of a bunch of old Ballantine Adult Fantasy paperbacks because that's where I got my copies of Hyperborea, Poseidonis, Golden Cities, Far and at least one or two others.
