Priyanka Sofia and I will be diving into Ann Petry’s other classic THE NARROWS beginning March 10th. A book several critics considered superior to THE STREET, even.

Please join us on the 10th for [a] window onto the powerful ways in which class, race, and love intersected in midcentury America.

Rosalie | 70 comments I've put in a request for a copy from my library system. Columbus, you've changed the date, right?

Yes, sorry, unfortunately we had to scrap the original date due to unforeseen circumstances. Are you available for discussion on 6/5?

Rosalie | 70 comments Sounds good. Can you edit the subject heading of this thread? It mentions March 10.

A brand spanking new article in The NY Times about our June buddy read. Or rather the beautiful new Library of America edition with The Street, The Narrows and her other writing. It really is an awesome edition.

PS Thanks for sharing this article! I bought The Library of America edition as well. Now off to read the article.

I can't seem to edit the subject heading to change the date.

Priyanka, I was looking for a book on my shelf this morning and instead found an old Mariner edition of The Narrows with a foreword by Nellie McKay. Nice, trade paperback edition, too. Never realized I even had a copy of this book. But the LOA edition is just classic.

The heading is changed by the way. Glad we’re all on board for 6/5. Didn’t realize this book was so long.

Hello everyone, are we still on for the buddy read discussion on the 5th or do we need to delay it? I haven’t started it yet. Let me know.

Rosalie | 70 comments Oh wow, I just realized I never got a notification from the library, but the book isn't on my "holds" list. Maybe I got a notification and missed it. I'll have to wait a few days to see how long it will take to get it (and they don't have it available as an ebook, alas).

Yes, it really snuck up on me too. I was thinking it was the 9th or 15th, not the 5th. But that’s the great thing about these buddy reads, we can play around with the dates. Let me know when you all are ready.
