A little fun thread, if you want to join in. The letters carry the normal Scrabble points values, any extra scoring eg triple letter will be noted, 50 extra points for using all 7 letters.

The aim is to do it in 20 minutes, but you have a week before I post the best possible solution (because that's when the newspaper gives ME the answers!).

In my 20 minute slot I got 7-letter answers for 2 and 3 OK, but I'm struggling to get decent scores on 1 and 4...

message 4: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) Okay, if I understand correctly, I'm supposed to make words from the letters, but I don't understand the word score part (I never played Scrabble, sorry).

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

I got 7 letters for 1, 3 & 4. just 5 letter for 2

Do we post the words here?

Post here whenever you're ready. I'm still working on 2 of them - 1 and 4. And now you've confirmed there are 7-letter words to be made from those letters I'm even more flummoxed.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

Sorry, I can't get a 7 for number 2 GRRR. I'll keep going and try again.

I have loads of other stuff to do so I'll put mine up now...
1) HALF (30)
2) ARCHIVE (95)
3) INSTANT (57)
4) SOUP (12)
total 194
Failure!

message 9: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 24, 2014 01:59AM) (new)

Archive, grrr

Ok, I've not played scrabble in years, can't remember how you add things up (what you get for using all the letters)

1) Hayloft
2) Vicar
3) Instant
4) Nonplus

1) Hayloft - of course! 16x3=48+50 = 98 for all the letters
2) Vicar - 10x3=30
3) Instant - 7+50=57
4) Nonplus - very good! 3x3(for the P)=9+6+50 = 65
total = 250
Impressive!

message 11: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) Okay, I got a 7-letter word for #1 while on the phone, but am still working on the other three - perhaps when I come home from work tonight. But I don't know how to figure the scores.

That was me with the scores; thankfully we have the wonderful Jay to help. :)

lol!

Oh dear, did I forget last week's? Never mind - here are 4 more to try:

R(1) T(1) N(1) P(3) A(1) E(1) R(1) - triple word score
D(2) A(1) E(1) S(1) I(1) I(1) I(1)
T(1) P(3) R(1) E(1) O(1) R(1) S(1) - triple word score
A(1) E(1) T(1) N(1) P(3) T(1) N(1)

As the par score is 145 I think there must be some good 7-letter words to be found there to get the 50 point bonus.

message 15: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) Hmm. I've got a seven-letter word for the first & third set, but only a five-letter for the second (all those Is!) and a six-letter for the fourth. I'll keep working...

I keep on forgetting about this... oh dear, old age is upon me... or something...
Apparently the best solution was 7+7+7+6 for 220 points. As far as I remember I got 7+6+7+6 so lost out on 50 bonus points on the 2nd one.

OK, the new one:
H(4) H(4) O(1) L(1) I(1) G(2) Y(4) triple score on 4th letter
T(1) P(3) O(1) S(1) O(1) S(1) M(3) double word score
Y(4) L(1) S(1) E(1) I(1) F(4) T(1)
I(1) T(1) T(1) F(4) Y(4) R(1) H(4) triple word score

I was a bit rushed for time and scored only 154 (6+6+6+7)

message 17: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) So far I'm 6+6+6+6, still working.

Jay Howard (jay_howard) | 169 comments Mod
woohoo! I got the max score! Last week's words were:
HIGHLY (24)
STOMPS (20)
FEISTY (12)
THRIFTY (98)
Total: 154

Jay Howard (jay_howard) | 169 comments Mod
This week's letters are:
E(1) E(1) G(2) V(4) A(1) N(1) R(1) - triple score on 2nd letter
E(1) G(2) R(1) A(1) E(1) M(3) A(1)
S(1) N(1) K(5) A(1) A(1) E(1) C(3) - double word score
X(8) O(1) O(1) P(3) B(3) S(1) T(1)
Par score is 145-155

message 20: by Jay (new)

Jay Howard (jay_howard) | 169 comments Mod
OK, I've got 7+6+5+7 for 168 at the moment. got to be room for improvement there...

message 21: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) I only got 6+6+6+7 for last week's - I had highly, stoops, feisty, thrifty. Not sure how the 'stoops' - 'stomps' difference affects things. Let's see what I can do this week...

message 22: by Jay (new)

Jay Howard (jay_howard) | 169 comments Mod
stoops is 16 points, stomps is 20 (since O is 1 point, M is 3 points, double word score)

message 23: by Jay (new)

Jay Howard (jay_howard) | 169 comments Mod
Last solution:
AVENGER (69)
MEAGRE (9)
ASKANCE (76)
POSTBOX (68)
total: 222

message 24: by Jay (new)

Jay Howard (jay_howard) | 169 comments Mod
Here's something different to try...
All words must be 4 or more letters, and must include the letter
L
Other letters, which can only be used once in each word, are
G R Y A R E G N
There is one 9 letter word in that mix. Target is 15 words minimum.

message 25: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) I got boxtops for the last one, but Word didn't like it, so I figured it didn't count. However - it doesn't like 'meagre' either - i would spell it with an 'er' rather than an 're', which also works.

I've invented some great new words during this. Like 'firthty'. Not sure what it means yet...

That's when you come out of the dentist after anaesthetic injections - raging thirst but you can't actually say 'thirsty', and even if you do get a drink you know it's just going to dribble all down your front.

Last week's 9 letter word was
GLENGARRY

This week's scrabblegram letters are:

D(2) D(2) I(1) N(1) O(1) R(1) A(1) - double word score
S(1) E(1) R(1) S(1) G(2) A(1) W(4) - triple score on 1st letter
T(1) I(1) R(1) Y(4) E(1) F(4) C(3)
N(1) E(1) D(2) I(1) Z(10) O(1) A(1) - triple word score

Par score for all 4 racks: 195

message 28: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) Well, I wouldn't have gotten that! I've heard the word/name, but would have spelled it with one 'R' I think.

On to this week's new words...
