1. Who is your favorite character so far and why? Who do you relate to the most?It is hard to pick a favorite character because I like a lot of them. If I had to pick someone I guess it would be Mark. I like the little blunders he makes when not understanding something that is human. It adds an element of humor to the story.
2. What is the significance of the chapter titles? Why do you think the author chose them? What clues do they give us to the story?
All of the chapter titles do tend to foreshadow what is to come without really giving anything away. I think the author is very smart about the way she crafts the clues throughout the book.
3. Discuss the relationship between Mark and Kieran. What does each boy provide to the other? Do you think their membership in the Wild Hunt affected their relationship?
It is hard to say whether Mark and Kieran's relationship was due to their circumstance or not. I am not sure that Mark would have necessarily had realized his sexual preference if not part of the hunt. I do not think him and Kieran would have ever been together had they not both been taken into the hunt. I actually adored Mark and Kieran's relationship. They were opposites, but brought out those opposite parts within each other. Kieran was able to help Mark get through his time in the hunt and embrace his different heritage while Mark helped Kieran to better understand human nature.
4. Do you think the Shadowhunter laws are too harsh, or that they should be followed?
Yes and no. They can be harsh given what you find out that different punishments are, but at the same time, some are in place for good reason. The shadowhunters main job is to protect the world and if there are other factors that cloud their judgment, then they might not be the best they can be when making tough decisions. I understand why it is forbidden to be in love with your parabatai. It might make you choose a selfishly in certain predicaments.
5. How do you feel about Mark's predicament? He is torn in two different directions. Ultimately what do you think he will choose, Shadowhunter or Fairy?
In the middle of the book, my feeling was that Mark would choose to go back to the fairies, just because he would feel like Julian had the family and institute under control without him and Kieran needed him.
6. It is obvious from very early in the story that Jules and Emma share feelings for one another even though it is against the rules of a parabatai. How do you see this playing out. What are your thoughts on which is better, denying your heart and following the law or following your heart and accepting the consequences? Would you want a parabatai?
In a normal circumstance I would say follow your heart, but like I said above, a shadowhunter's existence is for one purpose. If they're judgement is clouded, it could impair this. The purpose of a parabatai is mainly to stregthen your skills in battle and if you were worried about that person over the purpose it could be an issue. I would want to have a parabatai that I knew I could trust and knowing someone always has your back.
7. Out of all the downworlders, shadowhunters, or regular "mundane" humans in this universe, which would you like to be and why?
I would like to be one of the warlocks like Magnus and Malcolm. I always have thought it would be interesting to be immortal just to see how the world changes around you. Yes, you would have to see everyone you care for eventually die, but you deal with death either way.
8. What are you liking best and least about this book so far?
I love everything about this book. If I had to choose something to dislike I would say that Christina's story line is just eh
9. How well do you think the author built the world in the book?
I think that Cassandra Clare has done an AMAZING job building this shadow world around the normal world. It is a world that has now spanned 3 different series and even though it is a fantasy world, it almost seems realistic and plausible. If you haven't read the other series from her I definitely recommend it!
10. What other books by this author have you read? How did they compare to this book? Would you read another book by this author? Why or why not?
YES YES YES I love this world! I have read both the Infernal Devices trilogy and the Mortal Instruments series. I would recommend that order too if you want to read in chronological order. Cassandra Clare is one of my absolute favorites.
11. The previous series to this one has been made into a movie and tv show. If you were in charge of casting the movie version of this book, who would you cast as each character?
Emma - Kathryn Newton
Julian - David Lambert
Mark - Jonathan Whitesell
Christina - Sofia Carson
Livvy - Rowan Blanchard
Ty - Louis Hynes
Dru - not sure
Tavvy - not sure
