Life of an Author discussion

This is a huge topic, and everyone has their own take on it. Personally, I like to build a general framework for the world (and plot), but fill in a lot of the details as I go. How much planning do you think is needed for a story? Does it differ between novels and short stories? I'd love to hear everyone's opinions!
