Clean Romances discussion

Hello!

I'm the author of two small-town, sweet romances, and I could use your help! One question I hear A LOT is: are your books clean?

My books have "behind closed doors" sex scenes and minimal swearing, but ... Are they clean?

Hi Bridgid! Here’s how it was explained to me by an agent. “Clean” books typically have no sex. Some kissing is okay as long as it doesn’t cross into serious making out. Think sweet romance and not sweating in the back seat of a car. Clean books also shouldn’t include outright profanity, explicit sexual references, drug and alcohol use/abuse, or graphic violence. Basically, if you walked in and found your eight year old reading it you wouldn’t have to have “the talk.” The book could be too mature for her, but it wouldn’t be offensive.
